Has anyone heard about or have pictures of the only Saleen Police car?
1989-422. This was the only Saleen ever built especially for Police use. Also known as the "Seal Beach" police car, as that was where the car saw service as a police vehicle.
Thanks to Bryan Weatherup for this tidbit of info.

I used to see it doing radar traps on Pacific Coast Highway, when I lived in Huntington Beach...
I would always give a wave from 86-26, and almost always got a wave back.
That car was very custom, I think one of the officers (maybe retired now) from Seal Beach PD owns it.

I believe it used to belong to the Police Department... used for speed control on PCH, they of course also showed it at local events. Back in the mid-90s I talked to the Chief to have invite him to bring it to a show. It eventually was retired from service I believe was sold to a collector and has left the state.

I heard that the Police Officer that used to drive it, bought it when it was retired. And still owns it. It's in the Saleen book if you have it!

Thanks for the link.
If my memory serves me right, which was jogged after seeing all that safety equipment listed, what prompted them to build that was a fatal crash in a high-speed pursuit in Seal Beach.
Saleen effectively built a safe, high-speed pursuit vehicle with just about every modern safety device available at the time... and of course it cruised PCH just as speeders entered the city.

The Seal Beach car was sold to a collector and the car now resides in Washington State in a small town called Woodland. I wont say his name but he also owns an '88 Saleen Sport truck, only '89 Saleen with Kawasaki green decals and same color DP5 rims which is more formally called "Slimmer" which has all the SSC upgrades which were all installed by Saleen. He also owns an 88 Saleen race car, 93 cobra R, 95 cobra R and the 2000 R cobra.

I "had" a picture from 4 yrs ago, but I am not able to locate it. Sorry. I hope to see the car sometime this summer and will zap a couple. It was built for a Saleen Manager in early 89. It has all SSC componets, along with the DP5's. It has the S logo for stripping rather then the SSC Chevron stripes.

Update: The Seal Beach PD car, the goblin, the two race trucks, and the '88 #21 race car showed up at Performance Autosport yesterday. The '88 #21 was dropped off and the rest went on to new owners.

Don

So all the '88 R cars are in one place now? Like a family reunion. :D

Yes, that's correct. The last time they were all in one place was at Sears Point Raceway in the early nineties for a Nor Cal Shelby Club Mini-Nats convention. #21 was the nicest back then. #20 is the nicest now. The wet northwest was not nice to the 21 car.

A clarification.... The 19 and 20 cars have been detailed and polished by Mark and Kevin at PAS, the 21 car should look as well after it spends some time in the spa.

You guys are wrong. The inspiration for the green wheels and graphics actually came from me and my "Green Flash" F250 NASCAR Shoptruck (shown here at Sears Point Raceway with Saleen 88#20 and 89#19 in the background. It was being used to tow the 88#20 at the time). All three vehicles are now in Richmond, VA. :D

Neat stuff! I've always liked the '87-'89 race cars. :D

Neat truck. Is that an old Trans-Am racer (67-68 coupe) sitting back there?

Does Mark/PAS own all 3 race cars now? I noticed that there has been one of the 89 Saleen race cars for sale on www.hemmings.com, asking price of 55k, can't remember which # it is, those showroom stock fox bodies are awesome.

No, Mark owns '88 #20, I own '88 #19, and Dick Gundeck owns the '88 #21.
All three cars are stored at PAS.
Yeah, that's Don Chamber's '89 #20 in Hemmings. I hope he does get $55k
for it (raises the value of all the cars).

I find that funny. That car never say the light of day. Bill Morrison has a heated 10 car garage that hardly ever opned its doors. Would not surprise me that he would sell a few, but all of them.........having a hard time believing this
