View Full Version : Another Team JDM Super PJ in the works! #39

A few days after i began posting about our first installation of the Saleen Supershaker system on a Parnelli Jones Mustang i got a call from a PJ faithful, Bruce Costa. His attention was caught when he saw what we were doing with our previous customers limited edition Saleen. Bruce had similar goals and knew we could achieve them for him too. So after a few phone calls and emails we arranged to pick up his PJ for him in Rhode Island and have it delivered here to be Supercharged!

Well the PJ showed up yesterday safe and sound delivered by our driver, same day he picked it up from Bruce. We offloaded it in the rain but brought it inside where we wiped it down for a few quick "Before" pictures.

Bruce's PJ is #39 and already has a list of upgrades performed. He is packing 360 RWHP at the tires utilizing a custom tune, C&L cold air kit, and Long Tube headers. We are going to remove the air induction system but still maintain his exhaust. NOTE: The Factory PJ underdrive pulleys will be removed and a stock Ford water pump and Balancer pulley set will be installed. Along with the Supershaker upgrade he is getting 39# injectors for more fueling and colder Autolite HTO spark plugs which we will gap to .030" for Bruce. With the stock 3.875 supercharger pulley (7 psi boost) installed we are expecting to easily make 450+ HP at the tires. However we will be limited to approximatley 450 with out upgrading to a twin fuel pump system.

Here are a few quick pictures of Bruces car "before" ill be keeping everyone informed of his transformation to a Super PJ as soon as we begin work on it!! I think we plan to start tommorow so get ready for it Bruce!

Jim, thanks for not leaving it out in the rain. Yesterday I shocked the PJ by putting its paws on snow which it has never seen leave a mind run on. So I don't want to shock it too much.
So far everything is working to plan - Great. Now onward and upward to a SuperPJ!

My only suggestion would be to head to Washington state maybe to a one of two shops i know. unfortunatley my only Canada contacts are Keywest Ford, Saleen Canada, Da Silva and SHM

Could car haul it down to Troy and do it at Saleen!

Thanks for the heads up re: Saleen referals up here in igloo land. Key West is a Roush dealer and New West is a toilet..lol..much like Walley/Surrey (Surrey girl jokes are world famous and mostly based on true stories), Saleen Canada has a worst reputation here than..hmm..than anyone..and is invisible on the left coast as are the others mentioned from eastern Canada. Other than the Fraser Valley (home to 98% of the performance shops..and vehicles) the rest of the area is so rabidly "eco/evironmental/anti car-truck...unless its the size of a rollerskate and powered by BS..they hate you..we even have anti idling laws aimed to stop anyone from driving trucks and muscle/performance cars. Thats all I have to say about that..lol..thanks again.

Ill tell you what, it will be more HP per dollar spent! Im totally for the NA build as its the same setup i have in my car. 400 at the tires with out the weight of a blower on the car is alot of fun! But your going to spend about $4000 on parts plus labor. I can get you a great deal on the blower kit with a tune from us. Just call me up! It does come with 39lb injectors, just to think about since you wanted to order them.

more pics!!! The car should be done today. We are just waiting to get some stainless steel thin wall tubing in to make some new PCV lines for the blower kit. Saleen sends some rubber lines that over time see alot of oil vapor and heat and become very soft. Under boost these rubber lines will collapse and create a PCV oiling problem within the engine. We are making these lines S/S so they are impossible to collapse! Just one of the little things we do for better fittment.

After this we Dyno!! and Bruce should be Shakin' and Bakin' his tires in no time!!!

These are pics of the PCV lines we replaced. These lines are normally rubber and with the oil vapors that run through them and engine bay heat makes them get very soft over time and then they will collapse under boost. To prevent this we took thin wall tubing aluminum piping and bent the new tubes to a perfect fit. Then we covered them with some loome and rubber fittings to connect them to each end. Im posting below pics of the driver and passed side with and with out loom.

The one that runs to the brake booster? You want to remove the t fitting there. You should have enough hose to run it straight to the back of the blower but if its too short after you remove the t get a longer piece from a hardware store. You can cap it but it looks cleaner with just a hose.

Some more pics and info from the dyno!!

Well we made the first pull on Bruce's car and everything looked great! We saw 8 max psi boost, about 7-7.5 on the stock 3.875" pulley the entire run. The car made 473 RWHP and 434 Ft/lbs of Torque. However we did max out the stock fuel pump. The car hit its max fuel pump duty cylce at 5800 RPM and started to taylor lean at that point. It never got above a "safe" air fuel ratio but it could have if we continued to a higher RPM. The dyno pull ended at 6200 RPM which we normally go past 6500 and set the limiter to 6800.

I gave Bruce two options at this point. We can leave it where it is, just take some power out and set the rev limiter to 6300 RPM or we could install the GT500 fuel system. The GT500 fuel system will give hime plenty enough fuel and bring the fuel pump duty cycle down under 60%!! This extra fuel keeps the motor safe and from running too lean. Not only are we going to be safe but because of the extra fuel we can now make more power!!

Im thinking with the pulley thats on the car we could see 475-480 RWHP safely with the fuel system installed. Bruce wanted to be right in this ball park so i think we may stay there....unless i can talk him into a pulley for some more boost!!! Again we were only seeing 8 psi at the end of the pull. 10 psi is very safe on these cars and a 3.4 pulley will do that.

Well after Bruce is done tommorow we are picking up Richards PJ in NY on our way back!

here is a video i made today, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y7xUSW5R7Q&feature=channel_page

Bruce's PJ left here about noon today leaving for Rhode Island in our enclosed carrier. The 302 ended up pushing out 483 RWHP and 464 ftlbs of torque! This is on the stock 3.875 pulley only making 8 psi boost! The supershaker is a really awesome setup and it just goes to show what these things can do with some good know how and tuning!

Thanks Bruce for letting us play with your Car, its been a blast. The car is awesome as it is right now, tons of power to some fun on the street yet still remains fully practical for everyday use. As low mileage as i saw on the car i know it doesnt get driven much but you'll enjoy every second behind the wheel that much more! Have fun and if there is anything else we can ever do please let us know!

According to all the articles I read the Super Shaker was released to the marketplace in late 2008. So the badging on the installed Supershaker indicates the release date with cars bumper number and SC markings.

Naw'... I wasn't implying a disruption. I'm curious about your silver coupe. If you ever want to share the details, feel free.

I'll try to get some info up as soon as I get a chance. Starting a new job, after working for Saleen for nearly 3 yrs, has really got me on my toes!! Thanks for the interest, Iwill see what I can do when I get some spare time. . .

Richard, have you happen to open up your new PJSC yet? If so, how was it? Those Covers are to die for! How did you get them like that?

Another PJ / JDM success story. We should start a club of alumni.

+1! While I like to keep my cars original, the plain-Jane valve covers in my S302E bug me... I think thats going to be my first "mod"...
