SALEEN ANNOUNCES THE 351 MUSTANG
Enhancing the current model lineup with the specially built 351 Cubic Inch offering.

Los Angeles, CA – (November 29, 2012) Hot on the heels of Steve Saleen regaining his namesake brand comes the first model announcement since the news was released. Making his announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the well known man of Mustangs announced the Saleen 351 Mustang.

“Since regaining the Saleen brand, I really want to bring it all together with the heritage that Saleen is known for”, said Steve Saleen. “With the current Saleen [302] Mustang model it provides all the right features to bring back and update the S351 model.”

After nearly 13 years since a Saleen production vehicle has been powered by a 351 c.i.d. powerplant, this new model debut has an exciting list of technological and design offerings under the Saleen 351 model name.

Power
The most notable component in the 351 is the Saleen engineered 351 cubic inch V8 engine which will produce 700 hp and 655 ft-lb of torque when paired with the Saleen 296 supercharger system.

“Everything about this project has been mindful of the goal to create the most potent Mustang on the market”, said Al Wagner, V.P. of Engineering. “I think we have certainly pushed the bar in the production Mustang segment with our 351 offering. Once the project came together I couldn’t help but thinking; if the 302 mustang is using a coyote engine, the 351 is definitely the gray wolf of the class.”

Transferring all of that power requires the use of some specialized equipment as well. The Saleen 351 will utilize a 6-speed transmission equipped with a high performance Saleen clutch system, and a 3.73:1 final drive ratio to ensure that the power will be where its most required, on the ground.

Brakes, Wheels and Tires
Working in conjunction to the wheel, tire, and Saleen S4 suspension are the Saleen 15” brake package which are a well-placed component of this 700 hp Saleen vehicle. “A multi-piston brake caliper setup is critical to a high performance vehicle of this caliber”, added Wagner. “The amount of power that this vehicle can deliver is astounding and needed to have a well composed counterpart allowing it comparable stopping power.”

Rounding out the performance system on the 351 are the Saleen 5-spoke alloy wheels wrapped with high performance tires. Setup in a staggered formation of 20x9 front and 20x10 rear, the slalom performance times and corning capabilities are set to be on-par with levels approaching those of pure bred racecars.

Design
Building on the design elements from the Saleen 302 Mustang, the 351 will feature the Red Butterfly Center Ram Air Induction system which has become a signature of the Saleen brand. A truly functional system, the Red Butterfly hood allows cold air to intake through the butterfly scoop design as they open-up under throttle. Once the air passes through the butterfly openings it is directed through the engine compartment to the 351’s powerplant where it becomes a tributary to the air intake system. Additional design components include full carbon fiber front and side splitters, as well as a carbon fiber rear diffuser which houses the F-1 style tail lamp. A complete treatment of Saleen 351 badging and graphics will also be included to complement any one of the standard or custom Saleen paint schemes available on all Saleen vehicles.

Saleen – Born of Racing
Steve Saleen’s high-performance history delves beyond the first Saleen Mustangs that went on sale in 1984. As a race car driver, Steve launched his racing career in 1969, where he competed in his first time trial. He then proceeded to win the first race he entered in 1970, and then moved to a professional racing career from the 1970’s through the 1980’s and 1990’s ranging from the Formula Super Vee, to the Formula Atlantic, and later to sports cars, truck and Indy car series. Based on his racing and manufacturing successes, Steve catapulted the company to new heights by entering the luxury supercar niche in 2000 with the Saleen S7, at the famous Pebble Beach Concours de Elegance in Monterey, California. By the following year in 2001, the race version was introduced – the S7R, and was quick to dominate racetracks around the world, including a Win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010.

Saleen – The Specialty Vehicle Manufacturer
As a Specialty Vehicle Manufacturer since 1984, Saleen offers a range of White, Yellow, and Black Label high-performance vehicles: The Saleen 302 & 351 Mustang, Saleen 570 & 570X Challenger, and Saleen 620 and 620X Camaro. Everything at Saleen is literally built from the ground-up, by skillful hands. The Saleen staff consists of a wide range of designers, research and development engineers, and production team members that work together pushing the envelope of development, manufacturing, and certification of high-performance specialty vehicles.

boston 11-29-2012 04:22 PM

woooo 700HP! incredible. After Ford themselves ripped off his hood design, and the GT500 got intense with 650+HP, this ought to put the incentive back in the Saleens, wow, incredible car, and always better than the GT500's due to the handling alone. and 700HP with a butterfly hood, good glot! can't wait to see it in action...

Bruce UBB 11-29-2012 04:41 PM

saleen191 11-29-2012 07:47 PM

This is great news for Saleen fans.

HotRodHarry 11-29-2012 08:21 PM

Is this 351 a Saleen built engine? Or the 5.8 Ford Shelby GT500 engine that's here for 2013? That just happens to be near 351 cubes. Either way....it's awesome

travcar 11-29-2012 09:10 PM

Saleen 351 #13-0002

I made plans to get a 351 when Steve first announced his plans to do a 351 in May 2010. I ordered Saleen 351 #13-0001 in September. I expect to have it at the NPD Ford show in Ocala, FL on January 11, 2013.

It was great to see the official announcement of the 351.

The 351 will be made from the original GT 302 that comes in the Mustang GT.

Bjrich01 11-29-2012 09:21 PM

But wait....

This is my first post on here but I got the email announcement of the 351. I do have a discussion point though. What about the Shelby 1000? I don't know any specs on it but isn't it supposed to be 1k hp in a 302 setup? Curious.....

travcar 11-29-2012 09:42 PM

Saleen 351 all 50-states legal

The Shelby is only 49-state legal. It has 920 hp from the 5.4 Liter engine and a price tag of $149,995 + the cost of a GT500. That's over $200,000.
http://www.roadandtrack.com/tests/dr...12-shelby-1000

My new Saleen 351 (5.8 Liter) is all 50-states emission legal. The prices have not been advertised yet, but I can assure you that Steve is giving Saleen owners a bargin in the cost to horsepower ratio. You can get a Saleen 351 for well under $100,000, less than half the price of that Shelby. That's why I ordered the Saleen 351. Steve likes using the lighter 302 engine to make his Saleen 351.

SCMcQueen 11-29-2012 10:05 PM

Is Steve bore/stroking a 5.0L block (302CI) to 351CI? Seems like that's quite a bit....My 281 is stroked to 302...and I am pushing more HP than the GT500 pre 2013...I guess anything is possible! More HP with less block weight = better weight distribution traditionally...

Can't wait to see the car and read the specs!

travcar 11-29-2012 10:09 PM

More horsepower - less weight

You're right about more horsepower and less weight. The 5 Liter/302 is newer technology with less weight than the 5.4 liter engine. That's why Steve likes using the 302 to make his Saleen 351.

SCMcQueen 11-29-2012 10:19 PM

what color did you opt for? Must have been hard to give up the yellow vert....how many signatures did she end up with?

travcar 11-29-2012 10:28 PM

Sold 2007 Grabber Orange S281 #07-014

The 2007 had signatures of Steve, Liz, Molly, Sean, and Clint. I'll have to work on the Grandkid's signatures for the 2013!

The new 351 is a custom Saleen color, Orange County Orange. I have only seen a computer print out of the color. Steve said that it resembles Grabber Orange with a candy effect. I am getting really anxious to see the car. Talking about it is difficult!

The Shelby GT1000 is an aftermarket car, like a Hennessey Viper or UGR Lambo. You buy a GT500, drop it off at Shelby American, and they put a $150,000 upgrade package on it.

I donno bro, that 2013 Shelby black with matte black stripes currently has stolen my heart. That is a tough car to beat, it has just about everything. Two years from now I bet you can get one for a right price!

Hope I get to see it in person! I am glad Steve will be showing in Detroit..I was fearful it might be California only...Molly was in town for the last showing in Detoit...

The legend is back !

This S351 is really amazing, "Power in the hands of a few" is definately back...and will outperform any..or every Shelby and Roush,...or whatever kind of car that will come up beside you at the trafficlight...or at the racetrack !
Thank you Mr Saleen for building the most beautiful, the most powerful and the most awesome car there is...SALEEN is #1...4ever...

Can't wait to see this car!!! Awesome!!

Jim D. 11-30-2012 03:16 PM

They sold two more 351s yesterday during press days -- Betsy (aka travcar) has started a growing fad! :)

There is not a 351 on display, it was only announced, so visitors to the LA Auto Show will have to make do with the beautiful Lizstick 302 Speedster on display.

SCMcQueen 11-30-2012 04:16 PM

I think I am beginning to hope there is not going to be a 351 on display in Detroit...I would definitely get served by my wife if one showed up at my hose!!!maybe she would not notice if my H302SC turned into a 351X!!!!

I thought that cute little Crimson Tide fan had stolen your heart? I'm confused...

...glad to see this one back. Nothing else like it in the Mustang lineup. I want one!

wildhorse 12-01-2012 12:04 PM

Thank God Steve is back love the look

ricksaleen 12-01-2012 12:36 PM

Jim;

Will have to wait to see the final product to weight in, but the hype is great for starters. Would be great if Steve could use different rims for this 351 car. The old SMS rims, I just can't get past them for my unfondness.

Since they are taking 351 orders on this car, do they have an order sheet, option sheet or at least ball park base price numbers on what we are looking at for this?

Truthfully, I was waiting for the new Mustang to come out in 2014 and then seeing Steve's take on that as I was never able to jump in the latest Mustang bodystyle being so close to my old 69' Mach 1. I am hoping to colaborate with Steve for something real special for a 2015 vehicle from Saleen to share space with the BASF Mystic. Considering that is 20 years apart it would be cool. Also since I believe I am through with my Viper phase (even though I do love the Viper), with a new little GUY on the way, a 2 seater just doesn't make sense for my family for the time being, a new Saleen Mustang or Saleen Explorer or Saleen SHO does make sence or a combination of two of them is even better. 20 years.........boy where is the time going?

Ironhorse 12-02-2012 09:02 AM

S351

It's really Great to have Saleen back in the game again! 700 Horse is just incredible! Maybe Steve could help some Nascar teams out!!! LOL! It's been a rough few years for America's Pride in Stock Car Racing! Hope to see one of these on the east coast in PA. come June!

mosaleen 12-02-2012 08:01 PM

Looks mean, like it will be.... great Saleen is back... Hum this could me my next investment.

Werecow 12-03-2012 12:25 PM

So, I wonder what it would cost to upgrade the 302 to a 351? lol

saleen777 12-03-2012 10:58 PM

This is definitely the car Saleen had to build to put them back in the conversation. Nice work guys! Saleen is back!

Werecow 12-04-2012 10:40 AM

Love that hood, but I am curious how they got past that new carbon trap requirement for the air filters.

hfnav 12-04-2012 04:50 PM

Carbon trap to filter kids and pets from the butterfly intake!

redflagsc 12-04-2012 09:16 PM

i thought the cylinder walls of the coyote blocks were too thin to bore out that far?

Werecow 12-05-2012 10:02 AM

I am not sure they are using the Coyote engine; however, Wiesco came out with a 351 by resleeving - okay not an actual word - the coyote block and adding a mild stroke. You can search google or I can post the article if you like. Rememeber the Shelby 355 (5.8L) is the stock 331 block that has been plasma bored. Still an over-storked engine though...
