Q: Broken Hood Vents?

Any of you guys have problems with the hood vents breaking at the screw on the bottom?

I'm on my second broken one and it's getting

1. Annoying as hell and

2. Expensive as hell!

I think the plastic is just too flimsy and over time those little posts crack.

Anyone come up with a stronger solution that won't break?

Barricade 04-26-2012 01:58 PM

FUnny you mention that.

I have a set Im playing with.

Drill them out then countersink the top.
Im looking at McMaster car for the perfect bolts now.

Plans to reuse the 3/4" or so polyshock.

Imatk 04-26-2012 03:27 PM

So you drilled them out and you're bolting them in?

That sounds like a good plan.

Let me know what you find.

Barricade 04-26-2012 06:01 PM

will do....

Jason @ 281m 04-26-2012 09:29 PM

Our tech has a way to permanently fix them. If you guys are good that cool, if you need input let me know.

Barricade 04-26-2012 10:38 PM

Dont think that you can come in here and impart your wisdom Jason....
Thats not what these forums are all about. http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...moticon/la.gif

Jason @ 281m 04-26-2012 11:04 PM

Its the same fix you already have.

Get a drill bit slightly smaller than the hole on the hood vent mounting tab. Then drill through it out the top of the grille. Use a small countersink drill bit and go through the top of the grill just enough to seat your button head bolt in the plastic. Take the small black button head bolt, nut and washer and "through" bolt it to the hood.

Works like a charm.

I really want these but I'm having trouble justifying the price....I wish they would have just come on my car like the other '09s.

03SaleenSC 04-28-2012 01:33 PM

How much do the mesh vents cost?

I know this was discussed recently, but I cant recall the price of them off the top of my head

My passenger side hood vent flew off exiting a car wash. I would have rigged it back to the car, but unfortunately it got all scratched on the landing and I feel I must replace. Is there a good source for these vents besides Saleen?

Meikol02 11-26-2012 10:22 PM

I have never seen them offered anywhere else. It is a pretty specialized piece. I am on my second set as well. Need to drill out my broken set to bolt through I suppose...

Deezbluballz 11-26-2012 10:44 PM

I've never seen a mesh version, anyone have a pic? Google search came up with zero.

We can get them for you.

hfnav 02-20-2013 06:02 PM

I started with 8/32 button heads that were 1 inch when I failed to account for the poly bushing and thus they were short. Then the 10/24 button heads in black at 1.5in worked. These were flat under the head so I passed on the countersink. The polys seemed originally pulled down quite a bit and in the cold I chose to not cinch them down as tight. Thx for the share.

Barricade 02-20-2013 06:08 PM

Is that a McMaster car bolt? DO you have the number?
The ones I bought arnt small enough to go through the holes in the lower panel of the hood. I could drill them out but thought I would rather find thinner bolts.

hfnav 02-20-2013 06:24 PM

$3.20 to fix, less if I take back the extra parts. :)

hfnav 02-20-2013 06:25 PM

Nope, just Ace hardware store. Lowes not quite the selection.

Barricade 02-20-2013 06:27 PM

All the ones I find in black are the black alloy. Those will rust like crazy.

Did the 10/24 fit the hood holes...?

dlford52 02-26-2013 03:08 PM

I need a set too. Are the one's on Saleen's site not aluminum? I have been looking for a set of aluminum vents for durability.

No, they are plastic. The hood is what they are referring to in that link as being aluminum. A friend of mine tried to tell me they were made out of aluminum at first in 2006 but all I've ever seen them as is plastic. I think he was mistaken for a thread floating around of a billet set a guy had made.

Your link isn't working for me Dave? Quick question though. I just got my mesh hood vents and put them on. After I put them on I thought they seemed a little high and did notice that it is possible to adjust them with tightening the top screws some. Did you adjust yours at all?

Jason @ 281m 03-05-2013 10:08 PM

Guys, we have the last 6 sets of mesh vents left new, period. At this point they will never be made again. We got them at $50 less then they were before....so $299 if you want a set, dont hesitate. They wont be available ever again.

kendoo130 03-05-2013 11:57 PM

Jason-I'll take a set of those mesh vents. I'll call you tomorrow to pay for them.
