How to: PJ center cap clean-up attempt
1 Attachment(s)
Hi All
Mine have fine surface fractures from what it looks like. Since these are not yet available, or never will be available, I decided to try and "polish" the clear resin, polyurathane, acrylic, whatever it may be ect... So what I did was use a Dremel tool first first with a polishing compound. Mistake!!! The heat generated melted the clear cover ever so slightly. Even at low rpm with light pressure. The clear is soft. After masking the entire silver section of the cap, I decided to wet sand by hand. Using 400 grit wet sand paper, I started to see a change in the clear water to a whitish look. This was easily removing the aged clear surface. After the 400 wet sanding, I went to 1200 wet sand. Then a hand, no wax hand polishing compound used by show cars to remove swirls. Although the results are not "like new", they are still much better than the frosted look of the plastic. The part that is still a challenge is the edge near the silver cap where the plastic meets the silver cap. It is very difficult to sand there and not remove silver. I have before pics, but if you have this problem, you don't need pic of the before. Excuse the poor quality pic. Steve |
Very nice! The original center caps for my PJ were golden yellow with a snakeskin texture in 2009. New NOS caps were installed during 2010 and by 2016 they were showing slight yellowing (but no texture).
Great how-to advice for a possible never-ending situation. |
Thanks Dave
Trying to keep it looking new. Steve |
Hi Steve
They certainly look better well done Saleen Speedlab in Troy did have PJ center caps available a while ago not sure if you have tried them. Tony |
The caps are currently unavailable . Saleen is suppose to provide certain parts
for the PJ as per a sales rep around 6 months ago, but no updates since 6 month ago. I figure that may have not materialized. |
As was said, these are unavailable from Salween - here's a new set on eBay:
