This Rare Saleen SSC Mustang has Driven Only 6,400 Miless

If the lineage of the Ford Motor Company read like a history book, the chapter focusing on the Ford Mustang would best be presented as an eight volume set… there’s quite a lot of pedigree to cover. But among the big-name cars like the storied Boss 302 and the Shelby GT500 are a few “sleeper” fan favorites, and this is one of them. Meet the Saleen SSC.

Built in 1989 for only one model year, Saleen’s SSC Ford Mustang (“Saleen Super Car”) was an unofficial tribute of sorts to 25 years of Mustang production. Only 161 were produced by the Southern California speed shop, and in their day they were quick performers, thanks to some hearty engine and suspension work.

Now showing a reported 6,408 miles on the clock, this is one such Saleen SSC Mustang, and it recently has come up for grabs online.

So what makes these different? It starts on the outside. Each SSC came dressed in a Saleen designed body kit, giving the car a low-slung racer look to complement its large window decal, sleek Dynamic Performance wheels, and yellow and grey hashmarks. All came dressed to match with an Oxford white exterior paint scheme.

Inside, the Saleen SSC fitted FloFit leather seats, a Momo steering wheel, a Pioneer stereo and equalizer, and an admittedly optimistic 200 mph speedometer. Got a few friends to bring along? They’ll have to ride separately, the SSC had no interest in rear seats.

Things get interesting under the hood, as the SSC’s V8 packs on a larger throttle body, updated intake, large port heads, a heavy duty cooling system, and stainless steel headers. The result was 292 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque (67 hp and 25 lb.-ft. over stock, respectively). Saleen tasked a combination of Borg-Warner five-speed manual and 3.55 geared Auburn limited-slip differential to handle that oomph, aided by Racecraft springs, Monroe Formula GP shocks, additional chassis bracing, and SVO brakes. All told, the quarter mile was dispensed in 14 seconds.

Adding a bit more rarity to the equation, this SSC is said to be chassis #185, as indicated on the front bumper, which makes this one of the very last built. Food for thought.

Originally, these special edition Ford Mustangs are said to have carried a price tag of $35,000 in 1989, which was quite a pretty penny in those days. Today, the Saleen SSC has commanded bids up to $26,000 with the reserve unmet and three days left to play. Given its exclusivity, one can expect the price of this one may head well north still.
