Help: 1997 Mustang steering wheel play
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could help to give me and idea how to get rid of my 97s steering wheel play? It doesn't have a lot, just a little. What I mean by the play is, you can move the wheel back and fourth like your turning, just a little... without the car actually engaging into the turn it's annoying, the car 94k on it so it might be a little understandable but... I just can't handle it thanks!

With fox era Mustangs, I knew steering wheel play usually meant the rag joint needed replaced.

I put the Maximum Motorsports version in my 1989 Saleen and it made quite a bit of difference. The rubber rag joint starts to get a little sloppy over time.

Maximum Motorsports Steering shaft and aluminum rack bushings helped that for me. It used to drive me NUTS.
I don't know which one helps more because I did them both at the same time. You could also consider the polyurethane rack bushings (instead of the solid aluminum rack bushings). I would do both the shaft and bushings.

The 93 Cobra was soft shocked by design and was understood to use them up in a few 10k miles. I'm talking 1/4 lane change on the Merrit Parkway with no input. Illumina shocks solved it 100% as most any replacement shock likely would have. I was amazed, and remember that quite well. It caused adrenalin rushes of the unwelcome type. Perhaps the concept applies to your 94k mile ride.
