Default Q: Is it still original? - Modify SSC w/ 2,300 miles

Maybe I have been watching too many episodes of "Whats my car worth" or "Barrett Jackson Auctions" , but here is my question.

If you have an all original vehicle specifically a 1987-1993 Fox Mustang Saleen. Lets assume it is ALL ORIGINAL down to the tires, brakes, interior and so on. Number matching super low original miles.

If you change out the hatch struts to an aftermarket brand, is it now a non original nightmare ?

If you change out the factory battery ???

If you swap out the h-pipe for a cat-free version, but hold on to the original pipe for possible re-installation ???

Please let me know your thoughts, I would like to make some changes but I also want to keep it COSMETICALLY as it left Saleen.

This is in regards to my 1989 Saleen SSC with 2300 original miles.

Thanks in advance.

Did you keep the factory battery? I hear of a lot of people with collector cars having their batteries rebuilt.

I would keep all stock parts. I wouldn't say it's a nightmare, but it has been "modified". I think those 3 items being changed aren't as big as let's say a intake manifold change or installing a cam or cutting and welding aftermarket mufflers or suspension components. A lot of Barret Jackson auctions are 100% restos anyway. Might be period correct and original but most seem really clean for a 40-50 year car etc.

i think that there is an acceptable amount of upkeep that is allowed and still considered original. Tires specifically come to mind because I don't think anyone expects to get a 20 year old car with original low mileage tires and be able to safely drive it. Sort of like changing oil - it is a routine replacement part just like wipers, belts, plugs.

Agree. I think if you were to list your car as is and mention those 3 items being changed you would have no problem selling it if you had the oem items. I'm sure it's a beauty with that low mileage.

Something like the hatch struts can probably still be purchased from the local Ford dealer.
The big question is what are your plans for the car?? If you want to go to MCA shows and be in the unrestored class, don't change a thing. If you want to just go to regular car shows, then no big deal. If you want to just drive the car make the changes and keep ALL the original parts.
In the end though, it is your car and your free to do with it as you wish.
A car like yours though is an invaluable reference for someone who is trying to restore a car like yours.

Don't change anything. Wrench marks on factory exhaust bolts hurt value on this car. Not many have under 2,500 miles. Anybody who tells you otherwise will never own a car like this, so shouldn't be expected to give sound advice. Find NOS hatch struts, and store the wheels/tires.

I know this wasn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth. Your car is special because of the miles and condition.

I would do what you would like to the car, you bought to enjoy and just keeping it perfect for some one else is a waste. Just my opinion. If you bought the car as a investment then I wouldn't touch. I see to many cars that are just to look at and to me the cars are to be driven. That is what these cars were built to do not to look all pretty

If you buy an 2300 mile car, at this stage of its life, leave it be. If you want to drive it, hence the need for an offroad pipe, sell it and buy a slightly higher mile SSC. There are enough around to get a low mile example, without tampering with a car that original.

+1 Leave it alone! I wanted to modify 89-403, but with less than 20k on it I just couldn't. Sold it and am searching for one that is already modded.

Don't listen to them its your car do what you want to make the driving experience better. You can change it back later or sell it and new owner can change it back, but my 92 SAAC MK1 is a lot rarer and the ride sucked so it got a full Griggs suspension and now its great to drive

1989 #178 with 661 miles just sold for 38k on Barret jackson. If that has any factor on your decision.
