Q: How do I validate an authentic Saleen speedo?
How can I determine if a speedo is an authentic Saleen 170 mph unit or a homemade replica?

Maybe a picture would be helpful. It looks correct but before I fully restore the gauge cluster, I want to make sure it's an authentic unit. Thanks.

Answer: I don't know.
I find the "low spot" near the needle stem to be odd. It looks as if "maybe" the stock gauge face has a large paint chip under the sticker. The stock Ford printed faces appear to have sun damage, but the needles look orange. With heat some of the 1985-86 Saleen 170 MPH face transfers (stickers) shifted, currled or slid onto itself. As if the adhesive reactivated and let the overlay wander around the dial. |

That's a pretty good replica if it isn't real. I wouldn't mind having one for my car (again, if it isn't real).
