Q: Replacement brake pads? - StopTech ST-40 Caliper
Hi Gents and Happy Holidays to ALL.
I am in need of new pads for my Saleen/Jones . I have a 2014 Gt 500 and those brakes are BRAKES! I have become accustom to the 500 brakes. So who makes a good min dustless pad that can get close to good braking with the original calipers and rotors for street use. ( Just got pink slip after 6 months wait!! Time refresh her.!). Car has 5,000 miles on it and rotors are a bit rusted and pads are OEM. No Abuse though. I'm looking at Autozone Duralast lifetime exchange ceramic premium front pads. All rotors will be turned. Thanks in advance Steve |

Hi Steve. Does AutoZone stock brake pads for the StopTech ST-40 caliper?
Your rear calipers and rotors are/were stock OE Ford Mustang GT items. |

Hi
Thanks for the quick response. Our auto zone does not carry Stoptech. However, I can get Stoptech. Is there a model/part number front pad that would be good for dust and street performance? Steve |

It's been mentioned before on here...
Front-- Hawk high performance street pad (low dust) Rear-- GT500 rear pad fits same caliper as GT, better compound pad

Thank you 1989 for the Info.
I did a Saleen site search, but it came up with nothing. I had not been coming to this site since I had 6 months of DMV pink slip issues that halted all my investment in my PJ. It arrived last week!! So it's mine.. Now I can give it some TLC. Doesn't need much, just a little.. Thanks Again Steve |

You also mentioned the rotors were a little rusty..If your doing them your self I would ask just brakes how much to turn a set of 2007 mustang rotors....I went in and asked how much to turn 1993 mustang brake rotors which were my two piece saleen alcon rotors and they did them for $13.50 a piece...(don't mention it's for a saleen) A little brake grease on the backside of the pads a set of hawk pads and the gt500 pads on the back and you should be good...Also I looked through this section 2007 saleen/parnelli jones...It looks like Jason at 281 motorsports sells a brake cooling duct kit for the front/rear for your car pretty cool upgrade if you ever wanted a little more for light tracking of the car...

Thank you 1989 for the info.
The rotors will be turned by a local high performance machine shop that knows how to do things very well and are reasonably priced. I can however get any type/style rotors at nearly wholesale via another performance shop one of my buddies owns if needed. Tracking PJ will probably not happen. The Saleen Watts link would be a concern for me on safety. In fact Saleen Rep stated to remove and destroy the watts link since the TSB issued by the old Saleen Company did not have the "fix" any longer. However, it is still available, but not enough of a fix for extreme track use. To keep it "Saleen" I will replace the Watts link with the Saleen/George Follmer watts link ( a Whiteline Product) and just keep the Saleen one in storage. I track my 2014 Shelby Gt 500. Oddly, it puts down times faster than 2 guys with the new GT 350 R with it's OEM Good years at the Fontana Roval track configuration. It does have a Cortex racing Watts link that really makes the car handle it's rear end very nicely. I also have front cooling ducts and racing pads on it. My Shelby has 8200 miles on it. I have put 5 sets of front tires so far, 1 set of rear tires, 4 sets front pads, 3 sets front rotors, 2 sets rear rotors, 4 sets rear pads. I don't think I have the need to put the PJ on a track. Maybe a parade lap, but not for track times. I do really like the PJ though. I respect Parnelli Jones and his achievements. Again, Thanks for the info on this unique car. Steve |

PJ pads
FYI
Hawk has many types of pads for track use as well as street use. Front Stoptech calipers HB141.X 650 The "X" can be replaced by the pad compound you choose... N = HP+, E = Blue V = DTC 50 etc, etc Rear calipers are stock Mustang calipers HB485. X 656 |

Our shop is local to you for parts and service. We can certainly help you out with pad selection. I would avoid ANY pads from Autozone or any mainstream parts houses. They typically carry "consumer" or "grocery getter" type parts. Way back in the day I worked for one of them and the mentality is totally different because their customer isnt looking for the quality we need for our Mustangs. Needless to say, I didnt work there long. Either way, we are close and can certainly help!

Thank you Gents.
I believe I have found the pads that I need for my application. I am having my rotors turned. But......... I may be looking for new reasonably priced 2 piece front rotors. Not drilled. I found some on Tirerack for $680 a set. Need to call about fitment on the ST-40 S/PJ. Also, for this S/PJ Mustang, I'm going to put a Whiteline Watts link ( Saleen/ Follmer Edition uses it) and hang the Saleen watts link on my garage wall as a conversation piece. Ever since the rep at Saleen (6 months ago) said it should be removed and destroyed, even with the Saleen TSB fix, me personally, I don't trust it next to the one (Cortex) I put on my 14 Shelby. The Whiteline is similar , but cheaper. Thanks Again to All. Steve |

If your going to put a Watts on the car, go Cortex...its just better. As far as the rotors go for the ST40, you only have Stoptech 1 piece, or 2 piece or our 2 piece we own the rights too. Ours are much better than Stoptech and we can order them slotted only.

Thanks for the info Jason.
After some research, I am going with the Whiteline due to Saleen re-branding (Saleen label, lower control arm) the Whiteline for use on the George Follmer Edition. In my own distorted way I feel it's still 100% "Saleen". Again, a personal thing. If I were to sell the car, I would remove the Whiteline and replace the with original Watts link with the TSB corrective parts that I have already secured. I would suggest not tracking this car even with the Saleen corrective TSB parts, if one is an aggressive track driver and pushes the limits of equipment. The corrective TSB is still a poor correction in my opinion. A hardened pivot bolt and putting the lateral support bar back on. Still one pivot support point to Diff. On the front 2 piece rotors, only if the machine shop can't clean them up. Thanks Again Steve |

Fair enough on your position for the Watts link. But keep in mind, you wont be able to run a Cortex torque arm with that watts link. And if you ever want the best chance of not having those tires spin forward, that is your only hope. Larger tires is not the answer. Just just food for thought. Be careful if you ever "reinstall" that OE Watts as if it fails, you could be partially blamed. We will only touch them to remove them here. You found someone willing to turn slotted rotors? (it usually destroys the milling bit) I know many will object to this theory, but in a performance application, you never want to turn rotors. The rotors are designed to be thick enough to withstand the heat put through them as to not warp. If they are warped and you turn them, they are still warped and will generally warp again soon or can crack. This is relative to how much heat you put through them, but I have a feeling your going to be playing with the PJ and working its legs out. I know you got a source for help, but we are only a stone throw away if you need us.

Thanks Again Jason.
The PJ will just be a 'not so often seen' stock show car conversation piece. And a limited use street driver for fun. I just sold my Cortex torque arm. I personally didn't want to drill a hole into my diff pinion flange. Not concerned about structural, but just didn't want a hole in the diff. It was originally for my 14 Shelby. Which has a Cortex watts link. That car runs the Roval at Fontana. People think it's a straight line car. It's that and more, once one learns it's limits. The Cortex Watts helps when adjusted correctly.. 1:54.6 last run. On the factory Good years. GT 350R's about 1 -1.5 seconds slower on the Roval. Shame, I wanted one. If I were to rank Cortex vs Whiteline watts link, I would have to agree with you that the Cortex is a better unit in the diff linkage support area and pivot adjustments. However, the Whiteleine is enough for the PJ. Rotors. I have a very good machine shop near me. For track use, yes I use caution. The Shelby has 8,000 miles on it and has been though 4 sets of front rotors. I have a contact for rotors. Thanks again Steve |
