Q: Alcon rotor replacements?
Wondering if anybody out there has built a custom two piece rotor in place of the Alcon rotors on an SN95? I have read the alternative posts for the Baer replacements etc. but wondering who/if anybody has built a custom rotor and if so who did you use? I am currently working with Coleman and would be interested in specs on a success story.

Hennie had a set made for his and other xp8's. The alcon mustang and alcon xp8 rotor was the same except the xp8 needed them some minor clearancing to fit. That's why when you bought a set for an xp8 at streetwise the xp8 set was $100 more.
I know you are speaking of a mustang, but if it fit the explorer I don't see why it wouldn't fit the mustang considering they are the same part. I believe hennie may have worked with coleman (or at least tried to). I do know that the result was something very expensive. He's a member here so you should be able to find his posts. I ended up using 96 corvette heavy duty rotors (I believe they same as a 97+ vettes) and having them drilled for ford 5 lug and shaved 2mm off the bracket. I'm in the rotors like $150.

Do you happen to know the face thickness of the vette rotor? The Alcons have an abnormally thick face and every swap option I have looked at was off 1/4 or so, which would pull the wheel inward. I figured if I could build a two piece to spec out to the Alcons, future rotor replacement would be cheap and easy.

Sorry, they are on the truck. That could be the part they machine down, I really have no idea though.
I have to assume my rotors are at least 1/4 thick, so if it's a 1/4 off you are suggesting an alcon rotor at the hub is 1/2 inch thick? I'm willing to bet plenty of people have called coleman over the same subject. The two piece idea has been around for a while, but if the cost is above the $1000 alcon rotors cost, not sure if it's worth the trouble. I think in American dollars hennies setup was like nearly $2000. Unless the rotor has serious clearance issues with the spindle, 1/4 inward isn't really that bad, you could probably just put a 1/4 spacer between the bracket and spindle. You would likely have to be running a monster front tire for 1/4 to mess with tire clearance. Goto the autoparts store, ask for a heavy duty 1996 corvette rotor, it's probably stocked and only like $50, that you can probably get back if you don't mess with it. I just looked back at one of my old posts, it was a 1995 heavy duty rotor and I think the hd rotor was standard in 1996

Just for reference the 96 Vette (C4) and 97 Vette (C5) run a different rotor. It depends on if the C4 rotor used was the standard brake or the J55 HD option. All of that will determine what rotor was used. I changed from a coleman rotor to a wildwood on a C4 vette and have no problems. The car was primarily a track car and the wildwood rotors were 1/2 the coleman cost. I would think if you could find hats for the mustang you could source a rotor ring fairly reasonably. I'm running non-saleen alcon brakes on 98-104 with the single part 13 in rotor. I would love to find a two piece set up that would work along with changing out the rears.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been working with Coleman but have been trying to spec all options out. I agree that the C4 HD front rotors look to be one of the closest options out there. One of the options I was looking at is the Wilwood Promatrix kit Brake Kit No: 140-8313 and running a.20-.25 spacer between the wheel hub and brake hat. As previously stated it would need to be redrilled but you would end up with a two piece so future rotor replacements would be cheap and straight forward.

I believe the caliper side of the bracket is 5 1/8 on centers, which should also allow the use of Porsche brembo calipers (which can really be had cheap)

If they are the same width for radial mount center to center it would open up a lot of possibilities for cheap large brakes.

No surprise, I can't even find a since sign of that part number. I'll try contacting alcon. Do you happen to know the caliper mounting hole distances center to center for the spindle and center to center for the radial bolts?

I don't have dimensions but I will find my order. Again, mine is for the XP8. I did buy new rotors. They were S351 rotors but machined down. Let me find it and I will share. BTW we have two Daniels on here replying. I am Daniel Bradley. One sec.

jcar302,
Here's the measurements on the bracket. Spindle center to center: Radial mounts for caliper center to center (7 1/2): Also it was mentioned earlier about the corvette disk option so I located a front rotor off of our 96 GS. This is the C4 platform stock rotor for the J55 HD Corvette brakes of the time. I need to measure the pad height to see how close it is but looks really close if not spot on. If so I'll likely order wilwood hats in the corvette spec with ford bolt config. Along with wilwood rings. The ones on the track car are 350 a pair for rings so much cheaper. Corvette top/Alcon bottom: Alcon top/Corvette bottom: Alcon side: Corvette side: S351950023, Nice! Never really see any Daniels anymore Hope this helps you guys some. -Daniel

I appreciate everybody's input. I will try and get up some pictures in the near future but I received the passenger side two piece from Coleman and was able to do a quick mock up. I have everything disassembled right now with some misc. parts on order. Once everything is back together I will try and post.

Only thing that has my OCD itching is that the center piece isn't flush with the rotor but rather on top? I was hoping Coleman could do a look similar to this for my AP Racing Saleen brakes. Rather than have those gaps around the bolt area.

Are there any part numbsrs or is this a strait custom build? Who did you order from? (Strait from Coleman?) I'd really like a pair and also would like to find a two part rear set in 13" for the SRA cars that aren't cross drilled. Also are the hat to ring bolts safety wired on the back?
You really did a great job on this! -Daniel

They were a custom build I did with Coleman. My goal was to build a serviceable rotor that didn't require any grinding, slotting, shimming etc. The rotors ended up being a straight bolt on replacement. I was curious to see what others were doing given the limited availability of the Alcons and the subsequent absence of pricing pressure because there are only a hand full of Alcon dealers in the U.S. I hope that people learned some viable alternatives along the way, mainly the Corvette HD rotors. I still think that with a little work the Wilwood Promatrix setup referenced earlier in this thread is a strong option for those on a budget who still want to be able to service and replace rotors in the future. In regards to the hat bolt question, they are not safety wired. I used thread sealer and given the fact they are easily accessible, I will run them through a few heat cycles and then retorque them. I have an Aerospace brake setup on a different car with a similar setup and have not encountered any issues.
