Default Functionality of Saleen Rear Spoiler?

Anyone know if the saleen rear spoiler on the decklid actually helps with downforce of any kind. I have heard it is just an anchor.

I took my rear spoiler off because personally i think they are ugly. I put some polished stainless bolts in the holes to give it a good look.

Anyone have anything better to fill the holes with?

Thanks!

I really like the Fake Spoiler arms that cover the bolt holes. They are made out of Billet Aluminum and give the wing the appearance of being adjustable.

I don't think these work for the holes drilled from the saleen spoiler do they?

I'm sure the trunk lid looks much better with shiny bolt heads showing now LOL. Im just messing with you. I know the spoiler weighs a bit because my trunk lid sure wants to come down quick when closing. If you didnt care too much about look, I know they make plastic bolt/hole covers that you could probably paint to the same color as the car. Other than that I dont know what to tell you. Again if money wasnt that big of an issue, Im sure if you put the lid and spoiler up for trade a N/A guy would probably jump on it.

Your car came with upgrade trunk shocks thats why the hood pops up so fast. The Billet arms should work fine with minimal custom work. It's what I would do.

If I was on a budget I would go buy some cheap vinyl that best matches your car from your local sign store and cut little dots to cover the holes. First remove that globby anti rust stuff we put around the holes in the trunck.

This is how it turned out. I actually like it myself. Just wondering if there was anyone else out there that doesn't like the spoiler. I think the spoiler looks great on the black cars, just on on MG..

As well, any idea if the spoiler actually creates down force or is it really just an anchor.

Thanks

He didnt remove the spoiler. He removed the wing.

Learn your Saleen's people!!!

I get more compliments on the wing and front fascia than anything else on the car. Its a Saleen trademark as it wont fit the standard trunk.

But please remove them everyone so that mine will be even more special.

You are correct...

Spoilers: air flows above them -- like the Gurney ducktail spoiler.

Wings: air flows underneath them as well -- like the S281 or PJ.

Steve always says designs are done based on functionality... providing downforce in this case.

Another idea would be to paint the hardward body color so they match and somewhat disapear. Just my $.02

You get my vote. I think it's a cleaner look without the wing. I think about deleting mine too. Just can't get the guts to do it because i paid money for that option!
More importantly, how's your rear view now?? I'm sure it's 90% more visible.

Shizite - I just order a clearance spoiler from the ebay site selling the left over saleen items. I have a 3-valve w/ no spoiler.. same color as you. I'd trade you.. but shipping would be ridunkulous.

I live in the orlando area PM me if you want to try to work something out.

Guys thanks for all your input... I don't think i have trunk shocks.. I noticed a couple comments on here about it.

I am going to hang on to the "WING" for possible change of heart. I personally do like the look without it for now. If anyone does take theirs off and comes up with a cooler idea please post!

OH and FYI there will be little indentations on your decklid where the WING sat, but the stainless does give it a more racecar look..

I like the look of the car with the wing. Gives it a more aggressive look.

I agree that it does make the car look more aggressive, I was about to buy a T8 painted trunk lid off someone and buy the wing but then i saw a couple of Saleens with the wing and how they shake, indent the trunk lid, and flap around while driving so i decided to just keep it the way it came from the factory..

Find a wreaked Saleen and take their trunk lid and wing, and the swap them out from time to time.

I don't have any of those problems yet. Mine seems to be holding up so far.

Thumbs down

I have no issues with my wing.

I'm sorry but the car w/o the wing looks like a V6 Stang !! UGH !! I never liked the Bullet look - it's like you are buying a exotic car, keep it that way, don't try to get a sleeper look - lol

LOL! So out of everything Saleen put on the Extreme to separate it from a standard Mustang the wing makes the difference between a stock V6 mustang and a Saleen Extreme? hahaha!

Here is a recent thread about the wing that also talked me out of it..

Ha - its just a main point of view for the car. With the Stangs going years back a stang with a wing would be assumed to be a GT, over a V6 w/o it. For some reason that school of thought has stayed with me. Also none of those issues in the link are happening to mine.

I get what you mean about the V6 and GT styling differences.. I wish that Saleen made a different spoiler for the extremes rather than just stick the same wing on all of the cars. Someone like TruFiber should make a Saleen style wing with OEM mounting locations out of CF to match the splitter and diffuser! I would be all over that!

I don't see anywhere where air actually gets under the "wing" on these.. I would like to see how much downforce the "wing" generates.. Probalby about 3lbs... Or about how much the **** thing weighs....

I actually prefer the Steeda race wing. The wing on our Saleens looks are aggressive but it's too heavy and it really should have had a center support to stop the wobble. I've considered machining a billet support for the center that I can bond to the wing and bolt in from the trunk. That would eliminate any future trunk damage issues or wing movement.

I Like the aggressive look of the wing but, I also like the sleek look of it deleted. But atleast with the wing mounted it hides the poor craftsmanship of the corner end caps that don't align correctly with the spoiler. Someone should design some kind of support to keep the wing from flapping though, it would be a big seller.

I know what you mean! But i did manage to adjust the wing and corners to all line up straight, made a world of difference on the rear look of the car from up close.

That must be why our side skirts fit so well.

As I understand, Steve was too wrapped in the company's bureaucracy and didn't have his usual involvement when it came to the design of the S197.

Seriously though, does anyone know if it actually produces aerodynamic downforce?

That is nice, but I think my 05 has them riveted in place. I could be wrong but I swear I attempted to align them a few years back and quickly gave up.

And yet another discovered shortcoming of car #05-653. I have done some research and found out that Saleen started changing the trunk struts in 05 and placed a Saleen decal on them. I believe mine are OEM. They are Stabilus 4R33-63406A10-AH and my trunk slams hard.

So is the heavy duty set the units Saleen installs? If so, are they going to have that special Saleen pricing?

I personally would have kept the wing then have a bunch of screw heads in my truck lid.

Just my opinion, but put the wing back on or take the car to a body shop and get the holes filled and painted.

Upgraded shocks? Are these put on the Saleens with the wing and spoiler, or just wing cars? Pretty sure mine are just OEM and the trunk drops quick too.

I ended up buying new trunk struts last year from http://www.lstechnologies.ca/. They were about $100 for both. The part number I got was B8-105-287-425N, but you may want to go just a bit stonger and get the B8-105-287-520N. My setup made a huge difference but will still fall shut around 6-10" from closing. Nolan Fehr is the guy I talked to.

Getting back on topic - there is some clearance between the Wing and the Trunk Lip, It's Small but it is there.

The spoiler angles up and the wing follows suit till it gets to the edge.
Then it swings back down like an airfoil. Angle of attack on the airfoil
looks like it has to work....

I dont care...I think it looks awesome. Without it the trunk looks too long.
Just my opinion fellas.....we all know what thats worth. lol

Barricade, where did you purchase the struts from? I checked the Speedlab site and they are priced at 39.99 each.
