Default Help: Saleen/Alcon front caliper install on 1996 S281?

Alright guys, I just purchased these Alcon Calipers.

http://saleenforums.soec.org/showthread.php?t=8814

Can anyone help me on info on how to install these on my 96.. I read that the spindle was changed on the 96-98.. Right now I'm running the Red Cobra calipers with C/D Rotors.

It looks like Shaun had sold these once before (Look at ebay above) and I purchased them the second time around. I'm wondering if the person who purchased them first returned them because they couldn't use them.

Please help...

Thanks,
~Manny

nice pickup. i hope you can use these on your car. i bought these for my 02, but i did not have the funds for them and i messaged the buyer said i did not have funds. he did not give me any negative feedback and he relisted them. so they were never sold before you. i cant help you on if it will work on your application. i assumed it would work on my car but i didnt have the $$ for the calipers or the rotors for them.

These might be the ones your looking at. I wish i would of gotten them but i was afraid of the condition and the cost of the rotors. I currently have one brembo rotor brand new from a saleen i just need the other one. One guy offered me 1300 for his with 30k miles but im not so sure if i want to pay that much for em.

1300 for a set of alcons with good rotors is a great deal. I am getting ready to purchase 3 sets of rotors in the next few months. My slush fund is going to be gone!

If you are concerned about the spindles, don't be. The brake hardware is the same from 1994-2004. The 1994-1995 has a different offset spindle, but this does not affect the braking hardware. As far as the rotors are concerned, you should not have to use Alcon rotors, any 13" rotors should work fine.

I'm going to clear up some mis-information on here. Alcon brake set-ups. There are 2 different set-up used from 94-99. The early 94-95 are specific. You have to run early rotors with them. The 96-up use a specific rotor also. You cannot use just any 13 in rotor on an alcon set-up. They do not bolt up like a cobra caliper. They use a different hat and mounting bracket. I would not recommend attempting to use stock 94-04 Cobra rotors with Alcons.

Guys with Alcons I need your help...

Is there a difference between 94-95 & 96-98 Alcon Calipers? Just the Calipers! I'm having someone make me the brackets and they are giving me the rotors as well.. The only problem is that I don't know if the Calipers will work with the 96-98 brackets or do I have to ask for 94-95 brackets and change my spindles..

Please let me know..

Thanks,
~Manny

94 and early 95's have different calipers than the 96-up. They require different mounts and different rotors. I have alcons on the 96.

Thanks bro.. This means I will need 94-95 brackets, rotors and spindles.

I was thrown off from what i read on Saleen CoA website.. I read that 94-95 calipers can be used on a 96 spindle since the mounting bracket on the spindle didn't change. All I would need would be 94-95 mounting brackets and rotors but wouldn't need to change spindles.

Thanks,
~Manny

You can use your 96 spindle as long as you use the 94-95 rotor.

94-95 and 96 spindles are interchangeable. No issues there. Your brakes will bolt right on.

Thanks bro! But I was wondering how can we tell if the caliper are for a 94/95 S351 or a 96-98.. The reason is because I was told that the brackets changed and so did the rotors.. Someone is making them for me so I need to tell him what year these Calipers are from.. They say 95 on them so am I safe to them him that they are 94/95???

The early 94's are the different ones. The 95's are the same all the way to the ones on the 99-00 cars. No difference.

Prefect! So I'm safe to ask for the 95-00 brackets and rotors.

Thanks for your help!

LOL sorry to bring this subject back but this weekend during knotts I was told that the Calipers never changed.. It was only the Rotors to accommodate the spindle offset..

And that they used shims to help the Caliper sit better!

??

Ok I lucked out... These Calipers were for the 95 to 04 Saleens so NO spindle needed to be changed!!

It was verified by Doug from Streetwise Motorsports.. I drove out to his house in Santa Margarita and he had an early 94 set.. We verified that the bracket holes were pushed out on my calipers and so that told us that they were for the later Saleens..

While searching for the Alcon Rotors I stumbled on some great info... Apparently Baer makes replacement rotors for this set up for around $450..
I ordered a set and they fit great. Here are the pics...

Is that $450 a set or $450ea?

Do they make them for the earlier 94-95 style too?

So posting this info only because I haven't seen it elsewhere here on this forum chain.

Call Doug,(949) 459-0744 at Streetwise and he'll also clear up which specific rotor your Saleen uses. Also, with permission from Saleen he can remake the OEM rotors i.e. using the original Alcon calipers and stenciling them. He admits it will cost some but can do it and with permission but will require a minimum order of 5 pair of calipers. Maybe we can build an order list here if enough people are interested.

So what you are saying is that the bracket holes on the calipers were different. Correct?
Since the caliper mount to the bracket on a Alcon is completely separate than the bracket to the spindle holes, It was always my understanding that the calipers were different so they mounted different on the early ones which in turn needed a different offset rotor.

The mounting holes on the actual spindle for the caliper are the same for 1994-2004, and 94-95 spindles are the same. So i'm confused when you say you didn't have to change the spindle because you had a 1995?? Maybe you can clarify this for me.

Heres a link to MM they talk about how all 94-95 spindles are the same.

Mine post is kind of confusing after rereading it. I wrote it late last night!

The early calipers had different brackets also, so the bracket, rotor, and caliper were all different than the 95 up is what I was trying to say.
Where the caliper bracket mounts to the spindle should be the same since all 94-04 holes were the same for caliper mounting.

So since the Baer rotors are for 95 up you would need 95 up Alcon calipers and Alcon caliper mounting brackets to work with Baer rotors.

You also never said you had 95 calipers, just that you have newer than 94. I'm sure you have 96 after looking at your sig.

Hope this clears up what I was trying to say.

This info is correct. However it's not just rotors. According to Bill the rotors require a caliper shim and offset tie rod ends. The rotor sets further inboard and will not work without these parts. The price is the same as posted. $420.00 for the kit. Rotors, shims, tie-rods. Plus $60.00 to slot or cross drill the set.

Sorry Amigo, I'll take better pics tomorrow... As for Justfloatn's post, he is totally correct. I forgot to mention the shims and new Tie rods but then again I said call Bill.. Hope this saves you guys some money. They look and feel great.. Can't believe I was sitting on these calipers for over a year.

If you prefer to purchase the Real Alcon Rotors, call Doug from Streetwise, he has them in stock! (949) 459-0744

Oh and we didn't check if the brackets were different, once we realized that the holes on the Calipers were drilled in different spots and he has the early set, that told us what I had.

Doug and I should have done a nice writeup since my calipers were off the car at the time. I truly apologize and regret not doing that.

Hi all, is it true that the early Saleen Mustangs S351 had interchangeable calipers with the Xp8?
