Default Pricing info: 1997 S281

Good evening. I am in the process of buying a toy to drive around on weekends. I came across a '97 S281 that is for sale out of state. The car seems to be in good shape mechanically with very little mods, however the paint is faded and clear is peeling. The interior is also going to need some love. As far as I can tell and from pictures the body looks to be dent free with no damage to body panels.

What would be a fair price for a 120k mile version in this flavor with bad paint? What would you guys pay?

Thanks!

Welcome,

I see a non stock Cobra or Cobra-style hood, and the front bumper might have been replaced or repainted, since the bumper number is in the wrong place (too low below headlight). I would check to make sure that it doesn't have a salvage title first, but if title is ok, ask if it has an accident history, politely of course. I think this is around a 5k car in its current condition.

I would first, figure out a max $$$ amount, then second, find the car that fits the budget... I would try to find the absolute best Saleen in 100% original condition with the lowest possible miles that could fit within your budget. There are some very nice cars out there that can be had for good prices if you search and be patient, and negotiate well.

Hes asking 5500 for it, I am going to try to get it for 4750 + flight ticket. To be honest I was never in the market for a Saleen ( I was looking at SN95 Cobras) But given the price and mechanical condition I would have a pretty neat car if I put about 2000-3000 into a paint job.

Ok, if you're cool with it, and know what you're getting into.

Yea. One of the big things on my list was him giving me the vin and doing a check on it. I noticed the number position and of course the Cobra hood so I am sure there was some damage there. For me, a lot has to fall in line for me to pick this up. Id like to see the saleen documentation, carfax, and get it for under 5000. If the stars align, I think I would be silly not to. The only downside is the crappy NPI 4.6l engine. but, thats fixable with some trickflow heads and a blower. lol
