Default Help: Series I intercooler/exchanger lines clogged - 2000 S281 SC

So I recently purchased my first 2000sc, 30,000 miles, beautiful condition. All appeared to be well. Set up an appt with a reputable mustang shop in Vancouver WA to have a custom tune, minor mods done, along with replacing my intercooler reservoir which had a leak. Upon inspection the shop informed me that the intercooler, exchanger, lines and pump should all be replaced due to heavy/hard deposits and build up in the system. My initial bill of 1400ish is now due to add another 3k to get all these parts up to speed. Totaling roughly $4400. My first question to the folks who know more than me about these cars, is $3500 a reasonable price to replace the factory intercooler, exchanger, reservoir, pump and lines? Secondly, at $4400 for the tune and replacement of factory parts, my money would probably be much better spent on at KB 2.1 system to replace all of mine? I know it will cost more, but will have much more potential than my blower. I'm looking for suggestions and thoughts on my dilemma. Anyone have any of these parts for sale? And no, I never intended on spending this much money, but it's where I sit. Thanks!

Congrats! Parts cost for what you listed would roughly be in the $1600-1700 range and that's without a shop markup. The balance is the labor which seems a bit high if you are supplying parts. What is their labor rate? If it's all coming apart then I would go for the KB, larger injectors may be needed as well, I would see what the tuner has to say.

That's a lot of money to pay for labor and those parts. A lot of it you could do yourself it's all pretty straight forward

The real question becomes, how original do you want to keep the car? If you don't care, go with the KB setup since you will be replacing several of the same pieces.

I just replaced the heat exchanger and lines on my 99. I got the heat exchanger I think from ebay for around $300 but then had to paint it, drill the holes and transplant the fans. For the lines, you can get stainless one, 21st Century I think makes them? I opted to buy a coil of hose and the fittings from Summit and make them up myself. While I had the blower off, I soaked the intercooler in a parts washer for a week, cleared it all out and added the heat shield when I put it back together. Seems to run a little cooler but otherwise, haven't noticed a lot of difference, probably need to have the tune updated to see any improvement. That being said, the series 1 doesn't really have much left in it, it heat soaks very easily. 340 rwhp is pretty much at or near the max you can get out of them.

Did you soak the intercooler to clean the inside where the water/coolant mix goes? Or did you soak it to clean the oil/brown residue that is on the outside from the PCV valve?

I just dropped the entire intercooler in the parts washer and left it running for about a week.... I will say this, wow did a LOT of oil come out which I'm assuming was external instead of internal... I was using a water based degreaser that is usually milky white and it looked like chocolate milk afterwards.

Ha! Thanks for the input, why I love the forums. I really don't care about being 100% original. Over time I will def go with the KB set up, I need to be able to beat the SRT8's with ease. I've decided to pick the car up and do what I can on my own with the intercooler system, save a lot of money(shop rate was $110/hr). When its back up to speed I'll take the car back in for a professional tune. At that point I hope to be up over 300hp to the tires. Probably have enough cash in a year to upgrade to the KB but may wait longer so I don't feel like this was a waste.

I sent a text to the guy in NY that I got mine from to see if he is still selling them, I'll post back if/when I hear back from him. I thought he had them on ebay but I don't see any listed at the moment. His name is Martin, I'll PM you his email and phone once I hear back...

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing... this is a heat shield that goes between the blower and the intercooler. Essentially it's a metal plate that closes off the large air gap around the intercooler to force more air through it instead of around it. It's hard for me to say that I notice much of a difference because I had the car apart for over a year so it's hard to make an accurate comparison.

OK, Martin got back to me, he is having 10 more sets made, they should be available soon. If you search on this board, I'm pretty sure his contact info is there somewhere, if not, send me a PM and I will send you his number. I don't like posting phone numbers on message boards...

Just realize what you are getting into with a kennebell. Without a built engine it's pretty much pointless considering a new edge will only hold about 400rwhp in stock form.
Assume a built long block and installation is going to set you back 6 grand, then you need more tuning, injectors, meter, it will probably break your transmission, the list goes on and on.

I'd probably fix what you have wrong (yourself, those prices seem high to me).
Have the SC ported, change the pulley do the fuel mods necessary (if any), have it tuned and live with it that way. I'd have to assume you could get to 350rwhp (not really sure with that sc), ask yourself, is 50rwhp worth the 5 grand the kb is going to cost you? Or are you willing to go all in should you damage the engine?
