Blown 4.6, planning next build, have some questions
Hi,
I bought a 1997 Saleen just 4 months ago and just found out the shortblock is bad. Consumed 5 qts of oil in 1000 miles. Also checked compression and it was at 20 in cylinder 1 and 120 in cyl 2, so I stopped digging and have started planning my build. My car currently has the following: Series I w/ 66mm pulley and 70mm FMS TB FRPP M-6049 heads (untouched) w/ stock cams 42lb injectors Bassani full length headers w/ catted hi flow mid pipe T56 transmission w/ 3.55s in the rear I know stock internals can safely handle up to 450-475 rwhp. I don't feel my current combo is anywhere near those power numbers, which is why I'm at a loss as to why the block is toast. But regardless, I'm at a crossroads right now. I don't want to turn this car into a race car, but I do like spirited driving on the streets. So my questions are: If I decide to stick with stock internals, will my current combo break be making too much power and break it again? If I go with forged internals, what's the max power I can get out of the series I? If I go with forged internals, can I hit 500 rwhp with the series I and aftermarket cams? Easiest answer is to go with forged internals, install aftermarket cams, and go with series IV or V blower and put down over 550rwhp, but I'm not sure if the power difference will justify the dollars spent difference, if you know what I mean. I've talked to a couple of people who have been very helpful, but they contradict each other on how much power I can make with my current setup, so I'm coming to you all. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

The main question I forgot to ask is, can this combo get me to 400rwhp +/- or will I need to port the heads and/or install aftermarket cams?
