Help: 1987-93 Brake Components - Where to source?
Hey all... I am wanting to fix/replace the brakes on my 1988 Saleen.
Everything in the brake system is original, and you can tell. So I am wanting to freshen everything up and put some new calipers/pads/fluid/lines etc on the car. I know the Saleens don't have stock brakes. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as what would be compatiable with this car? From what I read it uses the 86 SVO brakes? Is this true for the front and the back? So when I am looking up parts online I just select the 86 SVO as my car and I should be good to go? Thanks for any help! |

Brakes
86-91 Lincholn Mark 7 brake components which are the same as an SVO.Not 100% sure on the Mastercylinder though. Its a Ford Motorsport or Svo.You have to look at the numbers and measure the bore size.My 88 I had to get rebuild kits for the front calipers and they where Crown Victoria.I think they used a Ford Motorsport kit which may have been a mixture of cars. The rear calipers and hoses are Lincholn mark 7 as well as rear steel brakeline. The front hoses are stock Mustang,Calipers are?,The pads are Lincholn 7.The Master Cylinder? Everyone will say the calipers and Mastercylinder are SVO but from my experience I would say measure your originals and compare to what you get for replacement parts if you want to keep it original.

To the best of my knowledge, the front calipers and master cylinder are also from the Lincoln Mark 7.

Brakes
Like I said that is what everyone says and I thought too till you actually start working on it.Most people never worked on their cars because they are garage queens

Thanks
Thanks for the info.... and the rotors are also from the MK7? Does anyone here have a preference on what brand/type of rotors/calipers/pads?

hey keybrdcowboy, I have all the answers you need for I have switched out my complete brake system, the master cylinder, brake calipers brake pads are all for an 86 SVO. Thats how I found all my parts, if you want to do it right and get more braking force from your system, you should look into SSBC rotor and brake pad kit, the rotors are slotted so it would addd some looks to your ride, and also if you want better brake lines like steel braided, look into CJ Pony parts, they sell a kit specially for Saleen fox's that replaces those cheap rubber hoses. let me know if you need any help and i will be glad to. good luck!!!!

You can get the 73mm front calipers remanned from any parts store for around $15. I upgraded mine from the phenolic pistons (had one sieze on me) to the metal pistons used on the Crown Vic police cars. Like mentioned, the SVO parts are what you ask for. You can request metal pistons for the calipers if that's something you want. It's a personal preference for me.

Worthy of note: SVO master cylinders were made of lightweight aluminum.
So if you go and get rebuilt master cylinder off the shelf, some will be cast iron as equipped for the Lincoln and some may be aluminum as equipped for the SVO -- choose the aluminum if you have a choice. They generally won't be marked on the box, and it's a luck of the draw.

Does everyone think the master cylinder needs to be replaced? I hadn't planned on replacing that.... would it be a good idea to?

If you are thinking of changing everything else out, you might as well change the master aswell but keep all your stock parts. Changing everything out just means it would last that much longer!!!!!!!!!!

so the front and rear rotors from a 86 svo are the correct replacement parts?

Yes, that is correct.
