Default Convertible roof cleaning and protecting?

As a new convertible owner I'm curious as to what everyone uses to clean and protect their tops. A buddy swears by RaggTop. Anything else I should consider? I'm guess our tops are vinyl.

At work, I recommend to people to use Mothers Protectant. Spray it on a microfiber or cotton terry applicator, or directly on the surface and wipe. Buff off any excess with a dry cotton terry towel.

You can get it at Ace or True Value Hardware, many Car Quest or NAPAs, O'Reilly Auto, and online.

Preserves and protects for 30 days! Mothers® Protectant is a penetrating UV blocker, effective on rubber, vinyl, plastic and fiberglass. Constructed to recondition and maintain the original condition and appearance of dashboards, bumpers, trim, tires and more. Protectant isn’t an oily surface-coating film. It’s an ozone and smog resisting, UV shielding penetrant — a preservation agent that works on just about any uncoated plastic or rubber.

As a owner of several Convertibles and current owner of one. I have learned my lesson more ways than I can count. The best thing for the top is:

SOAP and WATER ( I only use this on my top and it is in MINT condition)

Everything else you put on it will give you all new problems. From fading the color, to cracking the top, and my favorite with basically any product you use, when it rains or water hits the roof, the product will run all over your car.

Wicket has an excellent point that is applicable to many surfaces -- use a quality car wash on all the surfaces, and often. Use specialized cleaners only when necessary.

If you do use a protectant for the vinyl, follow the directions so that excess is buffed off if necessary.

For some surfaces, Ford does have some products and care instructions in your owner's manual, though sometimes over-the-counter products of similar function will work just fine.

I still haven't gotten anything for the top yet but appreciate the suggestions. At show this weekend I was asked what I used on the top, I was kinda shocked as I don't think it is that black. Made me happy tho. :) I have just been using soap and water.
