Default New to me: 86-0064

Finally an owner of the type of car I grew up drooling over!

It's a project/daily driver but it's mine - new paint, stripes & graphics, 86 air dam, carpet , weatherstripping kit already on the way

Was told this is 1 of 3 built with red wheels, can anybody confirm while I wait the standard 6 months on my LOA from Saleen

Alot of work ahead but I hope to have it ready for PAS in a few weeks.

From the notes that Greg has with his magazine collection, #64 went to Snipes Ford. VIN: 212612. This vehicle was ordered/built to Saleen specifications and was one of a batch of sequentially VINed Mustangs received. It was produced by Ford for Saleen with the following features. Mustang GT dash, dead pedal, LX pin stripe delete.

Saleen collector Mike Lawrence may know the answer to your wheel color inquiry. I can recall he mentioned 86-0026 was the only 1986 Saleen with the machined, flat lace, Riken wheels. (These were painted red.)

I do not recall if he spoke of additional 1986 Saleen vehicles having red wheels or if #26 was the only one. I recall nothing said beyond #26.

Is this a factory Ford sunroof car? Are you replacing the hood? Are my eyes failing or you do have the later urethane side skirts? What documentation did you receive with the car?

I do believe it to be a factory sunroof car - but I have not decoded the door tag yet.I am replacing the hood back to stock. I am not sure on the side skirts but I will be pulling them off this weekend so I can take better pics then.

As for documentation the previous owner says the car was originall owned by a Ford dealer in Columbia SC and that matches what is in Brad's book. He also mentioned that he has the original build sheet and other documentation in storage and he would be mailing it to me.

I have several pics of the car in the early 90's with the red wheels. It has been repainted at one time the incorrect shade of red and will be going back Jalepeno red.

Good to see someone finally got that one.

Sunroof looks to be the right size to be factory but anything is possible. Factory sunroof seems to be a very rare Ford factory option on a Saleen. Far less than the T-roof.

Batch of VINs was 30 total.

Can you post the door tag? Is the buck tag still on the radiator core support, and can you post that if it is?

Sunroof is not a factory install. (Buck tag does not have the sunroof code.)

Would you like the buck tag decoded?

Without decoding the tag personally, that sure looks like a factory sunroof to me, exactly as the factory sunroof in my '86 SVO. Lifting the glass out would surely divulge the factory drip rail in body color, unless the roof was re-skinned with a sunroof panel.

Dave might agree.

Both the buck tag and the owner card tag are missing the sunroof code.

Buck tag would have had "MO" between the engine (M) and rotations # (07__) codes.
Owner card tag would have had "C" (same as door tag) between the axle/trans (Z2) and radio (Y) codes.

Sorry to say but the sunroof is not original to the car.

Awesome! Grats on the new purchase!

That is the same factory roof that was in '89...lol Jim, you could be right on the re-skin. Steve told me he didn't like the roofs in the car as it gave up some of the rigidity. I kept snapping the posts in the sun roof of my 89. I probably could have used some sub-frame connectors. :)

It does have a cloth headliner. I removed the interior pieces that cover the A pillars and it does appear that it has been reskined at some point in its life. Oh well now I have no worries about resto-modding it

I know this is an older thread, but can anyone tell me what steering wheel that is, I've never seen one like that before? Also, is there talk about the headliner because sunroof cars should have vinyl instead of cloth? Did the solid roof cars have cloth headliners?

Yes. Solid top cars have cloth headliners. I do believe pre-1984 fox Mustangs with solid tops can also feature a vinyl headliner, but this is not relevant nor do I know the model or series for this to happen.

The diehard early fox Saleen crowd will know the series name, but this is an alternative wheel produced by Momo. The common 1986 wheel is the Momo Veloce.

86-0046 may also feature this alternative wheel. I do not remember.

Glad somebody brought the steering wheel up. Is it possible to get this wheel recovered? Is this wheel still available to purchase?

No updates right now, as a basketball coach I pretty much have a 1 track mind Sept- March. I am still missing a few small parts on completing this car. ( Floor mats, shifter knob, and having the seats recovered)

Also thinking of resto-modding with subtle touches like SVO sail panels, and ARE 5 star wheels ..... Thoughts?

I'm sure any quality upholstery shop or leather worker could recover your wheel. I wonder how hard it is to find the center horn button (I assume it said Saleen)? What are your thoughts on the seats? Tmi makes reproduction covers, but they look awful compared to OEM (the colors are way off and so is the material). As for the SVO sail panels, they would look great, but I would leave the factory louvered sails if it was me.

I love your car btw, I'm in the process of buying an 85 in the same color combo...except mine doesn't have those killer red wheels.

I was wondering about the TMI repo covers - looks like I will be on the hunt for seats. I would really like to find a nice set from a low mileage 85/86 ....

The center of the steering wheel says saleen mustang on the horn button

Those red wheels are what suckered me in also ...... This car is my inspiration for restoring 86-64

Nice! Great purchase and I hadn't seen this thread before. #26 was the only car produced with the red wheels (per Liz Saleen) and Dave is correct in that it has the "unusual" machined Rikens. I've noted several other cars with the same Rikens but they seem to be random as I've only found a handful with the style. I "assume" that the reason several cars ended up with the red wheels is because of the magazine promo #26 was featured in and it inspired people to do their wheels in the same fashion. The article I think most remember in '86 was this one,

What are your plans for her?

The center horn button inlay is similar to how the wheel center caps were printed

No. The closest "new" wheel from MOMO what will look correct in your car is the MonteCarlo --> momo.it.

I like the SVO sail panels. If you going restomod, consider searching for a set of 16" Ronal R9 wheels. These do pop up for sale from time-to-time of eBay and Craigslist. These were the wheels on 85-0001, 85-0002 and 86-0088. They would look super in red.

I would also consider upgrading the interior with SVO seating. Either in the standard tu-tone charcoal cloth or the optional solid charcoal leather. Maybe hunt for the SVO spec leather shift boot, knob and e-brake handle as well.

If you go restomod, I would keep it in that mid-1980s feel.

Thanks for the info Dave. I like the Ronal wheels. Will keep my eyes open for SVO seats also as I start to search for my options there. I am also considering front Recaro seats and a rear seat delete.

The car has a salvage history, a cammed 331 and over 100k miles so I am not trying to put it back to 100% showroom stock but would like to stay period correct with most mods. It currently has a Holley Systemax intake and I would like to replace that with a Saleen/Vortech Intake ( but then again don't we all want one of those)

BTW I love #26 also

Recaros would be neat! Maybe with a crazy print and vintage feel.

Any thought to shaving the top of your SysteMax intake? The basic shape of the manifolds are similar and most people will not know. Maybe seek an old Pro-M mass air kit as well.

Personally I like the fox era Recaro's, with that zig zag pattern. You might have to change your interior to black to make them look right though. Period correct bolt-on's are the best. For my 86GT I bought nothing but vintage Ford Motorsport parts if I was going to swap out an original piece. If you aren't sticking with 100% stock you have a lot of great options.

Great points! I will add that Ford Motorsport did offer the front SVO seats in their catalog. They also offered their own version of the shift knob and leather boot. The SVO spec seat foam in now available as a reproduction item and the seats were based off of the stock sport seat frames.

A two or four point roll bar might be a nice addition to 86-0064. You will have fun with your project. When you start, keep us updated.

Here is a photo of 85-0002.

Here is what the Ford Motorsport "SVO" seats look like. They would look amazing in a Saleen resto-mod.

One more question about that steering wheel. How did a customer get that wheel as opposed to the more common MOMO 3-spoke? Did they have to request it, or was it when Saleen ran out of the 3-spoke they would substitute this alternative? I just received a copy of the Saleen Book and there is no mention of this wheel anywhere that I could find. How would someone know if this wheel originally came on their Saleen?

Sorry, I guess that's more than 1 question, but the previous owner of the 85 I am buying doesn't have the correct wolf steering wheel for the car, but he is giving me this wheel. I wasn't sure it was even a real Saleen wheel because I'd never seen it before. I know it isn't correct for an 85, but it will do until I find one. I just wanted more info.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

It appears if Saleen did not have the spec wheel, they would substitute a wheel. Most famous example is probably the SSC.

I do not know if the early Saleen community documented the steering wheel variation. What cars and in what time frame. Or if this is even possible. There is a chance the "paper" Saleen build sheet might retain this information. Or maybe not.

Some 1986 Saleen Mustangs also received a grey (instead of black) Momo steering wheel.

The Saleen Book and previous printed registries are a basic sample for each vehicle record.

If Saleen did not notate steering wheel style on the paper build sheet, if there is no date range to when an alternative was used, if all previous owners are deceased, if no photography history exists for a given vehicle and if theres is no steering wheel in the car... then you will not know.

Dave -

Great info on the steering wheel. I do like those wheels on 85-002. I think I am going to go with Recaro's a 4 point roll bar and rear seat delete.

Does anybody know what is the largest front rotor I can run and clear the Ronal's?

I just need to survive Basketball season, collect some parts and get to work on this car in March/April.

Are the Ronal's 16" or 17"? If they are 17" then you can run 13" cobra brakes with a little caliper "clearancing."

I know the Ronal came in a 15" and 16". I became aware of this wheel during my Mustang SVO ownership days. So they the 16" will fit an 11" rotor.

When I was going through Greg's media archive in 2006. I saw a few random articles about a Wilwood front brake kit for fox chassis Fords, I believe. Maybe from 1990. Though, the kit is probably out-of-production.

The Ronal R9 wheels weigh more than the ARE 5-spoke copy.

When you upgrade. Specs of discs, calipers, rear axles, front a-arms, spindles will all be important to your final wheel offsets and wheel choices. And might dictate what is used.

I may be mistaken. I vaguely recall that Saleen collector Mike Lawrence was placing a set of 5 lug, 17" Riken mesh wheels on a 1986 resto-mod he was working on. From a 2006-ish conversation. I do not know the origin of those particular wheels. Nor have I seen a set.

Looks like the alternate steering wheel is called a MOMO Master - I found 3 for sale on ebay and have 1 already headed my way. Here is the lonk to the other 2 in case anybody has a need,

That's the same wheel my car has. It was put on by the previous owner and isn't correct for the car, but it's a cool wheel nonetheless. He (the PO) scored a Saleen horn button for it as well, which is pretty nice.

Got more of the tear down process completed and found my Saleen stamp. The previous owner painted all of the Koni's black

You "might" be able to restore those. I believe KONI once offered a rebuild service. I was once told Chevrolet engine orange is very close to KONI orange for repainting.

I plan on sending the front struts to Koni to be rebuilt. I was not sure if they would do anything to the exterior of the strut. Worst case scenario I will try the Chevy Orange on them once they come back from Koni.

I bought new rear shocks so I just need to get the front's shaped up.

As for the steering wheel, my 86 came with the same one. I was told that very few of the 86 Saleens came with it.

Yes they do come up on eBay on occassion but not always inter the name Momo Master.

well ran into my first issue tonight -- the stock hood will not clear the Holley intake/spacer/valve cover set up currently on the car ... pulling valve cover tomorrow to see what rocker arms are on it and if I can swap valve covers, remove spacer and keep the Holley intake .... other option will be keep the cowl hood

How about an Explorer intake? Improve flow and when used in conjunction with a 1986 manifold cosmetic plate, would look OE to the casual passer by.

Going to pull the valve covers off and see what rocker arms are on it so I know what my options are.

I have a stock intake laying around I could use, would it fit under the stock hood with the spacer?

I may end up just having to keep the cowl hood on it .... not my 1st choice but after seeing this pic... I am ok with it

Decided to stick with the cowl hood for now. I have a set of valve covers that I think will work if I remove the baffle, then remove the spacer and install vert motor mounts - I should be able to get it under a stock hood. I just don;t have time to do all of that right now, so I am going to move forward with the cowl hood and current engine set up.

I'll change the engine pieces and hood as a weekend project later this summer
