Default 05-0003 S281 S/C Coupe (and other noteworthy late model Saleens)

Listed on craigslist is a "rare" titanium Saleen #03 for 28K. Is this car as rare as they say?? btw I have no affiliation with this ad.

It's a Saleen Custom Color executive demo. The color name is Trilogy Silver (I think).

I believe Greg has a sheet on this car (saleenlocator) and Spring (Saleenlvr) should know this car since she was trying to sell it for the company when they (ASC/Saleen) were packing for the relocation trip east.

I think its a good buy and maybe less money than ASC/Saleen wanted.

I could be wrong on some details, so correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe the 2005 debut car was #01 and painted Trilogy, the 2005 Lizstick car SS bought was #02 and SS's SEMA 2005 Beryllium car was #03 (the one ASC turned into the SkyView).

So, I don't know if this car is truly 05-0003 as you say.

I'd buy it. I don't recall what Hancock Park executive had this vehicle as a demo... Spring should know.

Hmmm. The chassis is an '05 and it does wear an "03" bumper number. Interesting.

Irvine photos coming soon. Tried looking for the Saleen vehicle sales sheet.

This car was originally at the Trophy Nissan Dealership near my home. It'd be neat to find out the original build information.

Spring might recall some of the history/details. She was there during the time frame and tried to sell it for the company.

Scratch my comment. I see the 2005 SEMA Beryllium car is wearing a "02."

wow! its cool how everything came together via pictures. I may stop by to see it in person tomorrow.

02-Beryllium Saleen
03-Trilogy Silver (I'm guessing the one featured on the demo video)
04-Lizstick Red

02-Saleen 550? Is this correct?

btw stupid question but which is #01?

Nothing is "stupid." I'm not batting well with this thread, but I believe Saleen did serialize the 2005 Preview car. The Trilogy S281 coupe with black chevrons. Later this vehicle gained a Scenic Roof for the 2006 introduction of the option. Also known to sit outside the Saleen Store as a display vehicle.

It 05-0001 was auctioned last year, I believe.

The one above was an "Executive Car" with silver chevrons, chrome wheels and no glass top.

Folks like Spring and Jared should be able to recall this vehicle.

I guess so. It features 'SALEEN 550' on the sides with the heritage paint option. I tend to refer to them as Heritage Paint Extremes.

The Trilogy was a Press Car. I don't know about a 05-0001, I guess someone could call MJ and see if they have anything on file.... I have files I kept on the cars I was trying to sell, I will check tomorrow for you and see if there is anything interesting. I will say that it is worth the asking price and people are always neg!! Hats off to the new owner, bring it by the shop :-D

Oh, and it had a Fiberglass body kit, the rear fascia didn't say Saleen. Also if anyone is interested in it, make sure to test drive it. Last I remember, after thinking about it, it wasn't running right. I don't think we fixed it, but not sure. I will verify in my files......

It's on the chart that held Greg's Foci, a few 2004 S281s missing parts, the hail damaged 2004 Focus, etc.

Yes, Greg got a gggggrrrreeeeaaaattttt deal from me! I think there were over 20 cars.... and I sold like 14 or 16 of them. ASC took the rest with them to Troy, and I don't know what happened after that. My last days followed.

This 05-0003 wasn't the 2005 intro vehicle though. The one that featured the Saleen-less rear bumper, with the black engine compartment, two-toned interior (dove Ford plastic w/ charcoal Saleen seats) that later gained a scenic top.

I have a vague memory that this was was sent to auction with the proceeds benefiting a charity.

I vaguely recall a rumor that this "01" vehicle might have been sent to auction running a stock Ford n/a 281 motor.

As Greg said, contact MJA for your vehicle production report. I would also contact Spring (above) to see what sales sheets she holds with this vehicle listed.

For bonus points. Attain the Executive's name that held this vehicle and see if you can contact him about his time and history with 05-0003.

Also, don't forget to contact SOEC for a logo window decal to complete your new car.

Congrats on the purchase! This is a neat one.

Nice, buy, I know this Saleen 2005-03, Lewis Ford (Matt Lewis) went to Troy Mi. and bought a bunch of press cars from them and this was one of them. I know he took a bunch to auction finally after he couldnt sell them around Fayettville , Ar. It drove fine and Im sure Matt got anything that was wrong with it fixed before putting it up for sale. I have pictures of me in this Saleen and got to drive it. In 4/11/2007 I got to set in 2005-01 there was problems with the supercharger at this time I was trying to decide on getting it or 2005-10. Since 2005-10 had less miles no problems at all and was the true press car that magazines, Steve Saleen, Sean Saleen, Molly Saleen, and General managers drove, thats the one I ended up with. Carlos Duran built 2005-01 first then built 2005-10 second he just reversed the 01 to 10 funny guy ha. I got to test all three of the Saleens now and have pictures of them all. I got pictures of all the special Saleens Lewis Ford purchased, including the 2005 concept Pernilli Jones they took a black 2005 Saleen repainted it PJ colors, 302 engine down the road it got a S/C supershaker and 2007 chrome 20's wheels and tires. The concept, 01, 02
PJ were the only S/C supershaker Saleen PJ made from the factory and 01 is Pernilli Jones. Also #10 Black Red Flag press car only one conv. S/C special int. front 14" saleen brakes made.
If you need any info. on what Matt Lewis fixed on your car let me know I can find out for you.

Scott

Looks like dirwin just bought it!

Congratulations, dirwin!

To resolve my curiosity, I looked to be sure it wasn't the un-numbered prototype with the fiberglass body kit, so I looked up the B-J 2008 Palm Beach history on dirwin's car, the 01 car pictured above as Lot Number 48:

Wow I just saw that B J was saying the 2005 - 01 had only 7200 miles on it, I looked at this Saleen 4-11-07 and it had 27xxx miles on it and had a bad S/C, it was sitting in front of the apperal shop in Irvine, Ca.
My 05-10 had 17,300 miles on it when I picked it up.

In 2007 I let pole position in Corona,CA borrow the car as a favor for Fritts Ford who at the time had some promotional stuff going on with them.
The car did not run very good and the lights were not working properly.
I think Sean logged most of the miles on this car.

Sean Saleen drove the Saleen I own now, 05-10 it was his personal driver for 1 1/2 years. 05-01 was built first then Carlos Duran built 05-10 second, he just reversed the 01 no. to 10 for the second press car.
Not for sure who drove the 05-01 ?????

You have a very nice Saleen with lots of good history, Tom Ryan used that car after Sean was inside and not out in the field anymore, also it had an A list celebrity drive it to see if he wanted a scenic roof installed in his Saleen.

Hey Jim, not sure if MJ would have that info on this special car, I will call MR Ryan tomorrow and get some info on his demo. If it is the car I think it is I loaned it to Cruise's people when they dropped his car off for a 475 HP upgrade. So Scott I'm pretty sure your car was the loaner for Tom Cruise who was interested in the scenic roof.

Wow I did not know that one, Tom Cruise drove 05-10 to see if he wanted the Senic Roof. They used it for the Bachalor show when the Saleen's were all lined up it was up by the tint with the 05-04 conv. also.
If you have anymore stories on my 05-10 Satin Silver please let me know Id love to get all the stories on it. Thanks Scott

Neo, Yes thats it. Before Patti left Saleen she gave me all the info. and pictures they took and even the one poster they made that hung in the room where they made the Saleen seats in Irvine, Ca.
If you look at when all the PJ are linedup on one side and other Saleens on the other side there is a tent at the end mine is the Satin silver Saleen on the right and the red Saleen is on the left of tent.
It was also the Saleen on the Armarol bottles .
Steve Saleen drove it for a month to see how he liked the Senic Roof and to see how much tent to put into it, since it was the R&D Saleen for the Senic roof it took the 7 times in and out to get it perfect.
Sean Saleen drove it for 1 1/2 years as his personal driver
Molley Saleen drove it off and on.
General Mangers drove it , Im trying to find out who and how many.
Magazines tore up the tracks with it LOL.

I just posted these pictures in another thread which about the SALEEN Side Stickers on the doors and did Saleen offer them on some models or not, and why... and realized the photos may be relevant to the discussion here.

This is your car, right Scott? This would surely be the same car in the video above.

As for the images below...

We used a company photo on the back cover of our Summer 2008 edition of Saleen Alley.

And the second is from saleen.com

Knowing that is from "The Bachelor" TV shoot, it may have been decided to ensure the branding was more prominent that they would add the SALEEN sticker on the door... just a guess.

Anyone know? Please also check this thread if you do... SALEEN Side Stickers and post what you know.

Scott,

And thanks to a tip from Dave, this may also be your car before it had the Supercharger and the Scenic Roof added...

I remember that article. MT said it was running too rich to pass California Emissions!

My 05-10 had 17,300 miles on it when I picked it up.
I was banging my head on my desk about this off and on for some time and finally found an e-mail conversation I had with this gentleman, Jay, back in June of '08. He's the one who bought it at Barrett-Jackson.

That's this car in this gallery: 2005 Saleen Mustang World Premiere Gallery

Jay's registered on the forum but hasn't been around in a while. Here's his User Profile where you can contact him: Saleen proto type # 1

The mileage discrepancy could be an error or it could be a new powertrain.

One of the first Scenic Top cars seen in public would have been the 2005 Beryllium SEMA display vehicle of 2004. The Lizstick glass-top car was rolling by the time the Mustang Northwest Show took place in 2005, the 1999 Lizstick convertible was already decommissioned at this time.

The Trilogy Silver 05-0001 was retrofitted with the glass-top by the time Press Materials for this new coupe feature and the expected Speedster convertible were announced for 2006.

Following the 05-0010 3-Valve during its press run would help indicate when it gained both a Scenice Roof and converted to an S/C model.

Most production 2005 S281 S/Cs don't start appearing until the high hundreds... with most of the convertible S281s following shorty in the 900 area... give-or-take a few dozen.

Jim Thank you so much on finding who bought 05-01.
Ill try to get hold of him, private message and see what happens.
Yes That is 05-10 (my Saleen) in the picture on the Bacholer and on the motortrend to....

Dave, where did you get your info. ??? I have paper work proving that 05-10 was the first to get the senic roof, it took 7 times putting it in and out to get it right. Then they put it into 05-01 after mine. Carlos Duran is the builder of both 05-01 and 05-10 he built 01 first then reversed the no.s on the 2nd press car to 10. These were the two Saleens first built then the others came after. I talked to Carlos a lot on my Saleen he was suppose to sign it at the NMRA at Enis, Tx back in 2007 but didnt get to it. Wish he would have.

Scott

There's just too much good stuff in this thread to have it lost in eBay madness, so I moved it to Lobby.

Dave's a regular encyclopedia on these cars... even stuff I told him and long forgot, he remembers.

I thought I recognized you in the top right corner with the camera!

I'll guess the top left picture was the car as it was flown in on the cargo plane?

I will say Mr. Cruise has amazing taste in women and cars... not bad for having started out as a kid who made his first step to stardom for singing in his underwear.

Steve sent Dan Riener's car UPS and it did get a small dent when they were unloading it at the airport, good thing Steve sent Bryan Chambers to help with this event because the car also got vapor lock from the altitude but Bryan made everything OK. It was a wild three days for me in New York!

Tom
My understanding is that MJ would have those records, as I do know at least one file on a "press/company" vehicle that did get misplaced in the shuffle, and Bill Vaughn was looking for it around the first of 2009 -- my understanding was he found others, but not the one he was looking for -- so you never know.

Certainly Tom Ryan would be able to give insight -- tell him I send my best!

Oh, and mosaleen/Scott,

Those photos would have been from the Mission: Impossible III movie promotional gig in 2006 -- that's not Mr. Cruise's personal car as tglockner indicated.

Thanks Jim, I was wondering on that one, since I saw some show with press trying to get to Tom Cruise in his Saleen as he was pulling out of restraunt and it was dark but I thought it was silver, or gray ????????
