Help: Belt and pulley problems - 2006 S281 SC
I took my 2006 Saleen S/C to the shop because I noticed the belt starting shredding after hearing some noise and smoke under the hood. I should mention just before I noticed the belt being shredded, I hit a curb, but very lightly, no damage but a bit of a scrape on the passenger underside.
They changed out the belt and I drove away on the highway for a test drive, after a mile or two, I noticed I lost power steering and charging system warning light came on and I noticed the temp gauge in the red. I had it towed back to the shop, they noticed the plastic idler pulley was just about melted and changed it with new pulley along with another belt (the second one that day). I'm lucky I didn't fry the engine the first go around. The mechanic suggest I drive around a bit so I wouldn't run into the same problem. Well, it happened again, the plastic idler pulley on the lower right and the belt gone to shreds. It appears the inside of the belt is catching and shredding, like it's being pushed to the inside, the alignment on the pulleys all around look good before driving off the second time. We thought it might be the alternator angle, I'm at a loss, I have the car two weeks, it has 2400 miles on it. I'm open to suggestions, has anyone encountered these problems? Should I upgrade the plastic pulley to a metal one? Change the belt tensioner as well? What size? brand? where to get these from? will this even solve my problem? Thanks in advance. |

I had the same problem on the freeway, I'd better change out my plastic replacement before it happens again. Mine melted at 4300 miles! Saleen is a great product but that piece has got to go

Russell,
What i would do is this, change the belt tensioner arm for a new ford unit or a better aftermarket piece, replace the plasitc idler with a gates or ford brand 76 mm 6 rib idler pulley, and get a new Gates brand K061080 belt. The belt tensioner arms on these cars with a supercharger is notrious for bending or even breaking! when the arm bends it will change you alignment and can walk the belt off or shred it. And like i said in the worse possible scenario that arm can break and leave you stranded. There are a few aftermarket tensioners that we sell around the same price as a new stock unit! The plastic idler is junk and i have no idea why saleen uses them, you need a steel pulley for the amount of force on the belt drive in this system. finally the belt that saleen uses is a hair too long on the 05-06 or 435 HP kits in general. Its a 109 belt and they use gator back brand which has a ribbed style belt. The ribbed belts are good but for short term use, they wear fast and will create slip. The gates V strip belts are a traditional style rib and last much longer. Also the shorter 108 belt fits nice and tight so it limits slip. if no of these help you id try loosening the bolts that hold the supercharger to the cylinder heads and pull the blower as far forward as you can. When setting the blower down they tell you to do this in the instructions so it brings the belt into proper alignment. There is a small amount of clearance to move it back and forth about .100-200" of an inch |

Jim,
I certainly appreciate the information. I'm not sure if the accessory pulley is ribbed or smooth? I'm in the process of ordering and not sure which one I need. It's the lower right pulley accessory drive belt idler pulley. Thanks. |

the one that seems problematic is the idler pulley that controls the alternator I think. My configuration is different from stock since I changed to Supershaker. It is grooved not smooth.

pulley confusion
I'm getting some conflicting information, the original plastic pulley below the alternator appears to be grooved, when I looked for a metal aftermarket replacement, everybody seems to be saying it's smooth and they don't have a metal grooved pulley but appears to be grooved because of the outer ridges/lips. The shop ordered a gates stock metal pulley metal just to see what it would look like and it's grooved. So I'm not sure if the smooth pulley can replace the grooved plastic pulley, seems logically it would not work?
Then I came across this post on another forum. I am confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Saleen 76mm Plastic Guided Smooth Idler Pulley – (00-1604-C09958):
JDM recommends installing the OEM 90mm metal non-guided smooth idler pulley (Part # 1L2Z-8678-AB) removed in step 56 on page 27, rather than the Saleen supplied 76mm plastic guided smooth idler pulley (00-1604-C09958) at the position next to the P/S pump Belt Selection: Gates K061080 Micro-V (13/16" x 108 ¾" – 6 rib) or NAPA 25-061080 (3.8", 3.6" & 3.4"* Pulleys Only). *The K061080 belt can be used with the 3.4" S/C pulley if used in combination with the V10 W/P pulley and 90mm OEM idler pulley in place of the 76mm Saleen idler pulley. or Gates K061075 Micro-V (13/16" x 108 1/8" – 6 rib) or NAPA 25-061075 (3.4", 3.2"* & 3.0"* Pulleys Only) *When using 3.2" & 3.0" S/C pulleys, change W/P Pulley to F7UZ-8509-AA (5.515" diameter – 17.317" circumference) for a V10 truck application - improves S/C pulley belt wrap. or Gates K061073 Micro-V (13/16" x 107 7/8" – 6 rib) or NAPA 25-061073 (2.87" S/C Pulley) When using 2.87" S/C pulley, change W/P Pulley to F7UZ-8509-AA (5.515" diameter – 17.317" circumference) for a V10 truck application - improves S/C pulley belt wrap. Stock "GT" W/P pulley (F6TZ-8509-AA) is 5.082" diameter – 15.957" circumference. W/P speed is reduced 7.9% with a 5.5" V10 W/P (F7UZ-8509-AA) pulley. Tighten W/P pulley mounting bolts to 18 lb. ft. S/C pulley mounting bolts: Torque to 150 lb./in. OEM Belt Tensioner Modification: Trim stop tab off of tensioner mounting bracket Saleen S/C Pulley: 06-1607-C13387B 2.87" (14.5 psi) – Machining front nose cone may be required on some early production S/C |

This is a picture of a non supercharged engine, when you put the blower on that grooved pulley your pointing to gets removed for smoothed one everyone is talking about JimIII |

So I will replace the guided or grooved plastic pulley with a 90mm or 76 mm smooth pulley?

The stock is 76 but i sent you a 90 for better belt wrap and a tighter fit to limit any belt slip!

thought i had it, but no go.
I had the new belt tensioner installed with new pulley, new 76 mm accessory pulley below alternator and the 90 mm accessory pulley above tensioner installed. Seemed to run fine but I noticed the belt still shredding or flaking (see pics). I can hear the belt rubbing against something near the alternator.
I should mentioned the accessory 76mm pulley installed on my vehicle was a plastic grooved pulley, but we changed it out with a smooth metal pulley. I guess prior owner didn't get this right or was initially installed with a grooved pulley but we finally figured that one out. |

Dude it looks like there is a cheese grater on your belt drive somewhere!!!
I can't tell much but i can see the idler on the tensioner arm is installed backwards, maybe this is causing the belt to walk under load.... Call me when you can man! |

Fixed the problem. Previous owner had a pulley with ribs that was wearing on the smooth side of the belt. Thanks jason. Ohh and we talked on the phone im the guy with from northern cali with the supercharger issue. Turned out the noise was the ac compressor 😑 supercharger is fine.

Yeah it looks like its going out the ac compressor that is. When it turns on and off it kinda makes a noise. Took it to a ford dealership guy told me everything you did as far as the noise should be consistant and all the time regaurdless if the ac is on. My mechanic is fired!! Time to find someone whos more familiar with this beauty. Thanks for all the help you the man!
