Default The long, slow restoration of 86-025 "Sassy Green" begins....

Well, I bought her for $3800 two weeks ago, and after assessing the greenness of it all, I decided to start with about the only non-green exterior component, the original Hayashi Racing 15" wheels... Got lucky and used my connections at the wheel refinishing place and got all 4 done for $260, plus scored the Gatorbacks off Ebay for $50. Total investment so far: $3800 + $200 (gas home) + $310 (wheels/tires) = $4310...

Wheels and tires look great! Were your Gatorbacks used tires or new?

That is a real come up on that car. I saw it for sale for awhile and was wondering why someone would paint a saleen green. Sweet rims!

Do you have any more pictures of the car? (Underhood & interior).
Likes like a great project. I look forward to seeing it progress.

My tenative plan is to go through the drivetrain and suspension, refreshing but staying stock whenever possible, then doing a little NASA time trials road racing, having a little fun with her in her current green state for as long as I can stomach it. I'll collect parts as I can for the cosmetics, then tackle the full resto back to original red in the next couple years...

The green isn't too bad. Have fun without a care in the world! Are you hunting for a 1985 or 1986 styling kit?

Well it came with an 85 kit, I bought a urethane front 86 bumper and am going to try and modify the "whiskers" to look like an 85. I like the 85 rear so I may try and make/modify something that looks close. Id take any year side skirts at this point, until I find or someone makes something that looks close to 85 skirts...

Sorry guys but I don't get stuff done very quickly when the kids are out for summer I did install a new Spec 1 clutch, water pump, and thermostat. It's running pretty decent, but last weekend was half-price at the Junkyard so I paid $150 for a pair of GT40 heads, an explorer intake, and 11 inch 87-93 rotors, spindles and calipers. I also ordered some MM rear brake shoes and Eibach springs. I am still trying to figure out if the Bilsteins on the car are original or not. The Saleen book doesn't list my car as a Bilstein car but they sure look original...

Mainer Racing makes a more aggressive fiberglass front **** that has vague similarities to the early style Steve Saleen sourced for his conversions.

You can sometimes find Saleen correct Spoilers Plus and A&A kits on lesser Mustangs of the same era.

Allright so I got the kids out for about 45 minutes of "hard Labor" de-greening the hood of the beast... 220 grit... Im calling it an improvement.

Looks like the car was painted white before it was green. I like seeing the original red.

Default A Few more pics

Well it made it out to the show today, people were very kind considering I didnt get much paint removal done prior, I was fighting an overheating issue, finally a new radiator solved it. Good times!

Default More Sanding!

Finally got all the big panels of Green sanded, just need trim, bumpers, etc. now. If anybody has nice unpainted or factory painted windsheild trim, mirrors, window trim, or the panels behind the rear windows they want to sell cheap let me know! Check out the preview of the new lic plate. Also finally found a pair of 85 rear spats.

Thanks for the kind words, rear suspension refreshed today, New Eibach sport springs, Monroe Formula GT shocks painted Koni red. I eventually will get the original Bilsteins rebuilt, but this will do for now. Car sits nice and low, no more listing to the (Fat) Drivers side!

Thanks for the pics, I felt bad parking next to all the good looking Saleens at that show! My progress has been slow but fairly effective, Maximum Motorsports Camber plates and an alignment are done, as were a fuel pump and filter. New 180 Treadware Kumho XS 225/50/16 on Rikens for my daily driver / possible autocross duties. Runs and drives pretty good, hopefully Ill get it out to Adams Motorsports park in Riverside for a little Time Attack one of these Tuesday nights.

Ok so an April update, new used Momo, new u-joints, and some sticky 60 treadware Yokohamas on your old Rikens Blake! Wife got me an early Bday present, the Go-Pro camera last month, so I took a few at the Goodguys Del Mar and at Adams Time Attack. Check out the vids below for a couple Adams Motorsports park videos, the one chasing down my Buddies 69 modified for autocross stang is my favorite. I suggest turning up the volume to hear all 200 unmuffled horses singing...

Oh the slow progress is killing me, but last weekend was the last autocross of the year down here in San Diego, she finished 2nd out of 7 cars. Cant really see the new Momo with red stitching, but it felt good out there. Some professional pics:

Ok so I've gotten way behind on my updates, got depressed about all the green paint/under hood and on the hinges so I sourced a pristine (on the underside at least) original red w/original paint 86 hood. Removed all the green I could and got it to paint shop:

And, finally, after years of green indignity, 86#25 returns to the red God and Saleen intended...

Well, it took another two months for my slow-in-the-heat work pace to get her put back together but here she is, new base-clear Jalapeno Red, new stripes, every piece of weatherstrip new:

I tried to keep the interior as original as possible, I dont like the repro seat covers so took the best inserts of four seats to make two good ones, with new outer grey. Backseat is just cleaned up original, new carpet, NOS Dashpad, new Momo w/red stitching...

Underhood was a big battle, it was all green, including the under side of the hood and the hinges, had to sand and repaint everything, sourced a junkyard set of red hinges and stock intake manifold. I have both the original super rare Hayashi Racing 15" wheels with a set of original Gatorback tires, and I have these 16" Austrailian mesh wheels with new Falkens

Looks like a different car. I get confused when I fail to see the expected green paint.

The aftermarket 16" wheels look like a nice alternative in a similar style to the HRE 15's.

I need to do that to mine so bad. At least mine is red though. They did spray everything like yours, headlight buckets, and all window trim. I just noticed yesterday that the driver door looks like it came off a red mustang with manual windows and no power locks. Seems there's been some damage to the driver side, at least the door and quarter panel.
