Jim Dingel had a supply of the knob in your hand (as well has the 1985 air cleaner decale). Most will probably say the knob in your hand is correct for a 1985 model.

Given the wear of the knob currently installed, cool factor of the painted insert and better quality of the worn knob... I would run the worn knob.

I don't think the lettering is painted. It looks like it was made that way.
The knob in my hand looks like either a NOS or nice repro if that is possible.

Do you have the contact info for Jim? I still need the air cleaner decal.

I didn't realize that's who you meant.
I contacted him right after I got the car and he does not have any more decals, so I am still on the hunt for one.

I think the shifter you have in your car is for the 88 Saleen. It looks just like mine with the blue insert that is in my 88. I also show the 85 shift knob next to it that I picked up a few years ago from PAS when I almost purchased a 85 Saleen. I just took the 85 shift knob out of the box for the picture.

Maybe we should swap your 88 for my 85 and that way we could each have an extra if needed......

No, I do not plan on attending. We might just need to mail them to each other.

Thanks,
Mike

That knob with the blue is pretty rare and I believe they sell for quite a bit. The 85 knobs are much easier to find. All I'm saying is I think the blue one is worth quite a bit more than the 85.

Did not know this. I would think that since there was over 700 88 Saleen's produced in 88, the knob would be more readily available. Seems that more 88 knobs are turning up on 85-86 Saleens. I know the 85 was reproduced, but I think the source for them is no longer around so they are becoming harder to find too. I purchased the 85 knob since I had thought about picking up a 85 I would have the knob if needed but I ended up with my 88 instead.

Appreciate the info. I will let Dagenham decide if he wants to a swap or not.

Regards,
Mike

The 85 knobs are easier to find. Be patient, one will come up.

You probably got hit up by 2-3 people who want that 88 knob by now....

The NOS? shifter knob that I got with the car has no threads to put it on the shifter itself. Plus it does not even go down over the threads all the way. Its like the didn't drill it out deep enough.
Can someone tell me if I'm missing an insert or if this is just a bogus part?
