Default Project update: Saleen 85-0132

Well after tinkering for about a month now I have been chasing mostly electrical gremlins. I think I have them pretty well sorted out.
I managed to refit the Kenwood radio, get the door locks working, fixed the map light, and my wife cleaned up the interior pretty good.
I had to get a hinge for the console lid as the old one was missing.
There are still a few wiring things to sort out but I'm getting there.

I still need to do something with the giant hole in the roof from the missing sunroof. And I have a '86 air dam for the front to replace the aero nose air dam.

Great to hear you are replacing that air dam. Those aero units look terrible on any four eyed car, but especially a real 85/86 Saleen. I'm assuming the correct 85 air dam is long gone? I have an 86 unit on my 85, but I do have the urethane 85 air dam. It's just so rare I'm gonna run the 86 until I can afford a proper restoration. I figure while its a driver it's safer to run the 86, even if it isn't correct.

Can't wait to see her with the 86 piece installed. I love your car btw!

Thanks TopGear, the airdam I have is urethane too.
Do you have a pic of the correct '85 air dam? I'm not even sure if I know what it looks like exactly. I don't know if I want to try and take the aero dam off and use the same nose or just get another nose and then replace the whole thing all at once when I reskin the roof and repaint the car.

Attached is a pic of 85-0031 (I believe that's the right number) with the correct urethane air dam installed. It's made by DH Buck and it should say "Mustang/Capri" with a number after that. I'm not sure what the part number is it I can look at what mine says when I get home. If you post a pic of what you have we can tell you right away if it's correct. The 86 air dam was all one piece and made of urethane, much like the aero air dams... The 85 options were 3 pieces...one made from urethane and one made from fiberglass. The early cars got the fiberglass, but who knows when the cut off was? Most 85's got the urethane.

85-0031 had a ground up restoration years ago. Like around the mid 1990s.

Then I must have an '86 because it is one piece and made of urethane.
Maybe between now and the time I paint the car I can get lucky and find the correct piece.

That's the correct air dam for most 86 Saleens (some of the early 86's got leftover 85 body kit parts). It (your 86 air dam) will look much better than the current aero dam, but unfortunately it won't be correct....but who cares? You can run the 86 until you find an 85. The 85 air dams are crazy rare and can be crazy expensive, but I've found 2 in the last two years, so they are around.

I know it's better than the aero dam and I'll use it but it will bug me because I'll know its wrong.

I'm sure you'll be able to find a correct air dam at some point, but they urethane ones tend to sell for around 1K-1500 depending on condition. Just make sure you set aside the cash so when you find one you have the money. I got lucky and some kid didn't know what he had and he sold it to me for $50...keep your eyes open and you may find a deal like that?

Well after stripping the whole interior out of the car and fixing two holes in the floor that I found, I put the whole interior back in this past weekend.
I finally opened a wrapped up NOS shifter knob that the p/o gave us when we bought the car and it isn't the same as the Saleen knob on the car now.
The knob in the car says Saleen in blue and the NOS knob has an all silver face that has Saleen in very small letters. Which one is right??

The Kenwood KRC6000 stereo is back in the car. The tape deck works but I cant seem to get any reception on the radio receiver. At least the correct radio is there, even if it doesn't work completely.

Now on to some mechanical things. Exhaust, check the brakes over and replace the engine harness that is really sketchy looking.

Its as clean as a 30 year old tan interior is gonna get. My wife says she took the old funk off of it.
After she was done I told her about the piece of condom wrapper I found under the back seat!

The interior looks great, I love that your car has the sand beige with the gold hayashis and blue stripes. That's the combo I'd want if I had a white car.

The guy I bought it from was going to repaint it and put gold stripes on it.
When I repaint it I am definitely going to put the blue stripes back on.

Found an '85 LX nose to put the '86 air dam on, and I'm getting that tomorrow.
I "fixed" the big hole in the roof by putting a piece of acrylic in the sunroof frame and put that in today. I'll post pics when I'm all done with that. I ordered a Y pipe, fan blade and a pair of hatch struts from Rock Auto so I can do some mechanical stuff to it.
Still have what seems like a ton of stuff yet to do though.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. A friend had an extra bunch of adapter parts from a Grant kit, including the adapter with the horn ring on it. We heated it a little bit and it came right off. I reglued it to the back of the Wolf adapter and sure enough I now have a functional horn and the correct wheel. I just put a steering wheel cover on it for now until I can get it recovered the right way.

So I ordered some more parts including the Y pipe for the exhaust.
I haven't started the car yet but I had to take a couple pics of why I replaced it. I pretty sure it wont sound as good now.

Looks like one of the old Walker replacement Y-pipes (the crinkle bend).

I believe so because it looks exactly like the walker pipe that I replaced it with. Of course I had to make it fit because the car has Flowmaster mufflers on it.

We'll here we go. 85-132 is tagged, insured and on the road. I took it for a shake down drive tonight. I'm pretty sure the engine is not stock inside. I think it has a bigger cam in it. It idles a little "funny" and it has a Holley carb w/o a choke.
It still needs a bunch of stuff but it is at least drivable and roadworthy.

I almost bought this car a couple of years back at Carlisle before I bought 86-64. Glad it found a loving home, looking forward to seeing pics of it outside

Well, just a couple weeks to go before Carlisle and I couldn't stand to look at that aero front end on the car any longer. So now I have the 86 spoiler on another nose and have everything fitted in place. Just have to primer and paint and reinstall.

I'm debating if I want to put the license plate bracket back on or not.
What do you guys think?? On or off??
It was a Virginia car originally so it would have had to have a plate on the front when new.

Absolutely not selling the plate. I love those plates. I had that one bolted to a cabinet when I got the car.

I vote leave the bracket off also. I also saw that car at Carlisle a few years back.
I had a plate like that on my F-250, but small deer got in the way on the way to the beach. Luckily that was the only damage.
See you at Carlisle!

I vote no, as well. Texas requires one, but I will pay a lot of $50 tickets before I drill through my bumper. My car was originally from CA, so would have had a bracket.

So I have the front air dam glued onto another nose and ready to prime and paint. I don't know if I trust the epoxy completely with such a hard to find air dam. I'm thinking about putting a couple screws or rivets in it as insurance. What do you guys think???

I would use the 3M Double Stick Body Tape and then the urethane epoxy. No screws needed- except in the wheel well. If you let the tape/epoxy cure properly, you should have no issues.

That's how we did it at the Saleen Autosport factory back then. The colder climates necessitated change where we had countersunk added screws starting in 89. Personally, I never liked that look.

I primered the replacement nose and spoiler last night and also got a set of GTS headlight covers from Pep Boys. I thought they would attach with Velcro but they have the clips instead.
Gonna be close to have it painted and installed for Carlisle.

Yeah I know. Tell the previous owner that. They painted it black so for now the trim on the bumper will be black to match.
When I do a full repaint of the car in a few years I will paint the trim the correct color charcoal.
