I had contacted the owner and he gave me a list of the minor issues. This is a nice Saleen that I had considered. The only problem I have with this situation is not the car, but the new owner and seller. He bought the car last week from the seller for 12,000-ish, and is trying to turn around and resell it for over double. While I have no problem with folks to make a profit, since I am a business owner, but to turn around in less than 1 week, before the check has cleared and mark it up to 25k, is absurd and I'm just making a note for interested parties that they have a lot of room to bargain.

Last month's Craiglist seller stated:

a little history on the car. i purchased it from mark lamaskin at performance autosport back in 2002 or 3. (he has also inquired about this sale) at that time the car had just over 5k miles and (not disclosed to me by mark) the hood had been replaced and the drivers fender painted. the front bumper has the original paint so i don't think it was in an accident. when it was transported to me, the car above mine had a brake fluid leak and the roof and hatch of my car had to be painted. someone broke into the car by prying out the door key lock. i had all locks replaced and the door had to be fixed and painted. also, unbeknownst to me at the time, these cars front brakes have a tendency to freeze up with lack of use. shortly after i got the car i got in situation and had no brakes resulting in me impacting a curb with the drivers rear wheel. no body damage but the wheel suffered (since repaired) and the rear axle should be realigned. these may sound like a lot of negatives but i want to be straight forward with this cars history. i have driven it regularly until the last few years and i have not ever had a problem with the car. the water pump and belt have been changed. other than that and the air and oil filters the engine compartment is exactly as it left the factory. to my knowledge the car has never been tuned up. it retains the original spark plugs and date coded wires. the only thing not working is the heater as the heater radiator leaks and is bypassed. this is normal for these cars. also the saleen installed radio and shift knob are missing. i do have the radar detector.

Actually the car was purchased by me from the original owner , The car was perfect and never repainted or damaged. The shipper damaged the car when it was transported to the owner ,the shipping company paid to have the car repaired. The lift in the trailer stuck and put the car into the roof of the trailer.
The top surfaces of the car were repainted but from the pictures the car looks great.
I contacted the owner and was trying to help him find a home for the car.

sold using craigslist last month for 12,000, posted after on ebay for 24,900., shortyly after reduced to 19,500.

now at mecum auctions in houston, along with two others.
i am curious to see what the "real" value of this car is. as only a true auction will tell.

https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/HA0...aleen/5-Speed/

https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/HA0...ustang-Saleen/

https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/HA0...tible/5-Speed/

watching these three auctions will be a good barometer of the "market" value of these cars.

I'd guess, mid teens, but his plans for a quick rich score may be for naught... after commissions and listing fees, take away 2k at least from the sale.

On a side note, it is interesting there are 3 fox saleens listed, this is the most I've seen in a long time at one time, a litmus test here.

Vehicle Overview
1987 FORD MUSTANG SALEEN, 33K MILES, 5.0L, UNTOUCHED STOCK ORIGINAL, VERY CLEAN, 5SPD

Up for sale is my 1987 Ford Mustang Saleen hatchback. No clone here, this is the real deal. It is car #45 of 278 Saleen Mustangs made in 1987. It has 33,000 original miles and has never been modified, wrecked or abused in any way, shape or form. I have had several Saleen's over the years and it is the nicest one I have seen in a very long time. I searched long and hard to find this car and the only reason I am selling it is because I recently purchased a 1993 Cobra R and needed the parking space but still could not part with the Saleen and then 2 weeks ago I bought a 2000 Cobra R also so now the Saleen needs to find a new home.

ebay_2015_87-0045_1217_0010

It is 1 of 2 Black Saleens built in 1987 with a factory sunroof which is a pretty rare option by itself. It is a 2 owner car from new and I have all the original Ford and Saleen paperwork including the Window sticker, books, records, manuals, Saleen sales brochures and more. The car was sold through Performance Autosport in 2002 with 5,000 miles on it to the second owner. I have several maintenance receipts from over the years and the majority of them were air conditioning repairs and yes it currently works and blows cold!!! The car even still has the original Escort radar detector that came as original equipment on all 1987 Saleen's.

ebay_2015_87-0045_1217_0039

The paint and body are in excellent shape especially considering 1987 Ford black paint was terrible at best and it shines bright and shows great from every angle. The only blem worth mentioning on the whole car is the rear spoiler has some hairline cracks in various places which is very common. It could easy be fixed and made perfect but cars are only original once. The interior is like new and everything on the car works. Mechanically it is a please to drive and really is a flashback car. Everything is still tight and feels solid like only a low mileage car can. I have had lots of fox bodies since I was a kid and no matter how much time and money I spent on them you can never put them back together the same as when they left the factory.

such a shame this car cannot find a person to care for it. this is the fourth time it has come up for sale after i sold it in march of 2015.

ebay @ 24,999.
mecom auctions @ high bid of 13,000.
carlyle motors @ 18,500.
desert autosport (a dealer in phoenix) @ 16,995

so the question is:

what do you, in the saleen community, think this is worth?

exactly where i sold it.

in a way I am glad that the person I sold it to tried to flip it and is not a saleen enthusiast..

I tried, for 2 or 3 years to sell this car with many original and extra pieces..... such as.

when i bought the car from performance autosport it had 5000 miles and still retained the original tires. i sourced another set of rims and put the original rims and 1987 date coded tires in storage. they were like new.

i removed the radio and eq and put them away. i would reinstall them each time i showed the car. they are in perfect working condition.

i removed the shift knob so it would not wear out and replaced it with a hurst knob. again i would reinstall it for shows.

the car did not come with the owners jacket, but i sourced one from ebay (along with a spare radar detector) and would display them in car shows.

the car did not come with the saleen floor mats, but again i sourced these on ebay.

with all these original items and extras included, i was asking 16500., and then lowered to 14500., and could not find a buyer.

so i sold the original low mile rims and tires on soec, along with a set of 3 piece sterns i was going to put on the car, a patty redeker book (i had 2, one autographed by patty and steve that went with the car) and the spare radar detector.

i still have the radio & eq (with the correct wiring connectors), shift knob, saleen owners jacket, saleen floor mats, a saleen intake and spare momo wheel. in the end i will get my original asking price, maybe more.

it is a shame, but the reality is, that the car is worth more in pieces than whole.
