Help: Looking to purchase 88-0641
 

Going to look at 88-641. Owner is taking motor and trans out for whatever reason. Mostly all complete doesn't have the flofit front seats, and doesn't have the correct wheels. Everything else seems to be correct. Whit car with tan interior. Has the id tag, has the center consol badge, mom steering wheel.

Basically I'm wondering if anybody can tell me the correct vin for this car so I can make sure. Also I thought I had read some place that the engine number had some stamping in someplace that aligned with the vin. If that's the case I can purchase the long block as the seller isn't using it.

Appreciate any help I can get. he was at 1500 for the roller, which is a great price, then keyboard warriors bid it up to 2k. I told him id bring cash and if car was decent enough I'd take it. Surely I cant be getting hurt. Has a clean title too,

Post the VIN once you have eyes on it and we'll be able to tell you if it's real or you can calls Saleen directly with it and they can verify it for you.

I don't know if Ford still stamps the last several digits of the cars vin on the block or not. If they do it is probably at the back of the block on top where the intake sits.

You typed too many 6's. Other than that, VIN looks correct for 88-0641.

This vehicle had one Saleen option, the 3.55:1 rear gears. Superchargers were not available for the 1988 model year.

Can you verify if the engine numbers matched anything on the vin?

No, I cannot.

The VIN will be stamped on the back of the block, on the flat pad just behing where the lower intake cork gasket is located. Its usually one of the greasiest spots on the entire underhood area, so you may need to scrape the scuzz off the pad to see it. The stamping is sometimes light, or crooked, but it will be there.

Just curious. What year did Ford start stamping the vin in the block?

I believe 1967.

I say that because my 66 Mustang 200 online does not have the stamping anywhere on it.

My 70 fastback has the vin stamped in the same spot as a foxbody.

I believe K-Code cars (65-67) had vin's stamped on the front lower portion of the block, just behind the timing cover, I think on the passenger side.

Not sure on the 6 cylinder cars.

My 67 does not have the Vin stamped in the block.

Now that is an interesting stamp. Would like to know more about what that came out of.

It's a hand built by Dave Dixon Saleen Performance Parts (SPP) supercharged crate motor. It was installed in a GT owned by Mr. Saleen's neighbor is the story I got. Bought the whole car for the Dixon intake, then discovered all the other goodies and backstory on the car. Almost every part from the catalog was thrown at this GT. Really amazing car. Aside from the vin, its mechanically an SC.

I acquired the car. From the firewall back was in great shape. Firewall front, not so gereat. I cut the front half off a donor car and am getting ready to replace from the firewall forward on 641. I'll check the engine stamping when I get back to the shop.

This sounds similar to Robert McClurg's "Mustang Illustrated" project Mustang GT hatchback. Robert was an editor/writer/photographer with "MI" magazine.

Mustang Illustrated did a number of Saleen-themed articles during the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1989, MI took a white/white Mustang GT convertible to Saleen Autosport and had the drivetrain, suspension, brakes, upgraded to the new SSC specs.

Also around 1989, MI took a white LX hatchback to Saleen for a complete exterior makeover to show readers how to get a flashy late-model Mustang for cheap.

In the very early 1990s, MI had a "Project Mustang GT," that was used for a number of install "how-to" articles. This red on red hatchback spent time at Saleen Performance Parts - Long Beach, drivetrain upgrades, FloFit interior install, Saleen speedo cluster, SPP roll cage and various hop-up parts of the era.

During the late(r) '90s Robert had Saleen Performance - Irvine, convert his green Mercury Mountaineer into an XP8.

Mustang Illustrated was the magazine that brought you the 1995 hardtop convertible S351.

Robert McClurg is a famous automotive photographer, his fame is the extensive catalog of documenting 1960s drag racing events.

The car was dark grey metallic with light silver ground effects when it was built. It had an aftermarket sunroof installed, which kills the chassis from my perspective. The car was a really nice dark blue color as I bought it.

Unfortunately, my 70 fastback popped into reverse while idling in my driveway and crashed up onto the hood of the GT, pretty much killing the GT. The fastback wasn’t really damaged. I parted the GT, and have every single Saleen part, including the hand built motor. I’m waiting to find a roller Saleen hatch or vert needing seats to put all the specific parts into. Haven’t found one as of yet.
