Were any 1994 SVT Cobras converted to Saleens?
Since I do not have the Saleen books (yet), I was wondering if Saleen had taken any 1994 SVT Cobras and possibly performed any Saleen conversions?
If so, does anyone know the last (6) of the VIN(s), possibly SVT build numbers and/or any other details? If this has been touched on in the past, can someone please post a link? Thank you! |
No 1994 Cobras converted.
ONE 95 Cobra chassis ( #95-0118) that was built as an S351 for a magazine giveaway car. |

Dave, the pics I have seen of it, I believe it has saddle tan interior and just tan stock Cobra seats. I could be thinking of the wrong car though.
|
It does have the saddle color Ford interior plastic and carpeting. Though Saleen installed standard black cloth Recaros and rear seat cover.
I never cared much for Saleen vehicles that feature upfitted seating of a different color than the OE Ford plastic panels. |
All below is correct. I have and contiunue to be in touch with the owner for a long time! DIBS lol:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
|
I liked that car for the removeable hard top, but I agree with the mix and match coloring. I am not sure why they did that. Anyone see that Galpin Ford retractable hard top for the new Mustang? That is sweet! It is on Youtube...
|
black seats in the peanut butter interior? all good by me, its a 2 tone anyways... and the pb is gross  ive turned down zillions of mustangs because of that color interior
i think i have a picture or 2 of that car somewhere..... |
Let's see a pic of that car
|
Saleen pictures

Wow I remember seeing the car in person in Saleen as in the bottom picture, but I don't remember the 3 Chevrons. Funny how the mind blocks out the bad stuff! In my mind, I could have swore it just had SA-10 type of Yellow and White Chevrons on the side and I thought I remembered a yellow hood stripe like on the SA-10. I also thought I remembered just stock Ford Tan Leather seats.
Mind is such a funny thing, I must be loosing mine. |
Scott, the car is in your neck of the woods, sneak over and take some new pictures of it, okay! Greg's going to need them for the new book anyway.
|
QUIET Rickster! I have called, and will exercise my dibs on this one. Will look for some picks I have!:biggrin::biggrin:
|
No problem, it is all yours Scotty.............until I win Powerball tonight!
|
Well no Powerball win! Anyway, I will make a deal with you Scotty, you can keep the cars in your area and I get the ones in mine. I already "let you" sneak the Extreme Rainbow Cobra out of state, now you need to cough up owner info on Extreme Rainbow S351R Speedster as I know it is only two miles from my house but have yet to ever see it out.
|
Now someone buy my Mach 1 already!
|
I love the tan interior with the black cloth Recaros, that's what the draw was on 95-0027 when I bought it, it matched my 95 Cobra R, with the tan interior with black race seats.
|
I have owned this car since 2000. It has 10,878 miles on it right now. I haven't driven it since 2002. I have all three Mustang Illustrated issues that it was featured in.

Glad she is still tucked away Don. Sent a PM and tried ya at work.

I know how hard it is to put miles on some of these cars Don. The BASF Mystic Speedster has just a tad over 10,000 miles on it now too. Finally got it running right a couple of years ago and now it is a blast to drive and I look very forward to it. Sounds like time to put a few miles on it and blow the cobb webs off! Great car you have there! Can you share a few more pictures from different angles, etc. so some of the guys and gals can appreciate it as well?
Take care Rick |
removeable hard top, now thats bad a$$ how many of those did they make with the removeable hard top?

I also didnt know that the invisable man drove a saleen at least he's got style
|
Ford made 499 removable hard top Cobras. They were all black. This is the only one converted to a Saleen.

I have the Mustang Illustrated issue where they step by step started the build on this car. It shows most of the tear down and reassembly but the article ends by saying next month we'll show the finishing touches with the body kit etc. As far as I know this was the only 5.0 Cobra to get the S351 treatment.

From memory... these hardtops do not fit a standard Mustang convertible. More pieces are necessary than just the hardtop. |
Mustang hardtop/convertible
This car wasn't advertised properly or I would've sold my college tuition/books etc to buy one of these rare cars. It sure would be nice to have one. Lucky for those who do. I wonder if any are junked that I can find. Just curious on the entire setup.

I believe all 499 Cobras were black. They are on ebay once in a while. Most stashed in collections! And it is NOT a simple bolt on addition to your vert! Although I am sure with the proper parts, it could be done.
|
Is there still a convertible top assembly and the hardtop fits on top of it or is there no soft top at all and you have to put the hard top on for shelter?
|
Quote:
Yes, there is still a convertible roof. BTW: The hardtop is finished on the inside. There is a headliner and a dome light. |

You are correct, there were more pieces that had to be changed. The latching mechanism on the hardtop did not work with the OEM Ford latch hooks, and had to be changed out by Ford to make this option work. Quote:
The C-H/T Cobras did come with a plastic dolly that the hardtop was to be stored vertically in. Quote:

I was in the military when this car was being built. I think it was Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords that was running the drawing for it? I do recall reading the build( I still have the issue). I wanted to win it so bad. After-all, I didnt win the McDonald's Monopoly Saleen.:frown: I went to the BX and bought stacks of 3x5 cards and started addressing and affixing stamps. (this was before I windows 95 hahaha, we used snail mail). I addressed until I had cramps in my hand like you'd never believe.. I knew I had to win that car! then guess what? My heart stopped when I was never called :frown:
I am glad it went to another owner with a good home(not really:mad:)LOL |

Greg Wackett should have all the issues. He may know the answer. |
Thank you Dave. If I knew how to post a picture on this page, I could post my H/C GT.
|
Fun seeing OLD threads dusted off, and how much activity there used to be here.
On posting pix, use "go advanced", manage attachments, and upload. The trick is the image must be small enough to be uploaded. I use Microsoft Paint, use resize, then shrink the vertical pixels to 450, the horizontal will automatically populate. Then click "save as" and rename it something other than the original image. This will allow the image to be uploaded directly here, vs using a hosting service. |
