Help: Knocking sound under front of car
hi all
i have had a knocking sound under the front of the car when i go over bumps for a long time know and i cant work out what it is. i recon it is on the left side ( your drivers side ) as when i go over bump with right tire first you dont here it. i have new strut mounts fitted. i have replaced the front sway bar end links with new links and re torqued to 85ft/lbs using lock tite aswell. re torqued sway bar mounts. have BMR suspension parts front and back with minimal miles. BMR : front lower A arms, front A arm support brace, boxed rear lower control arms, rear upper control arm and mount with differential bushing kit, Panhard bar, and rear solid sway bar kit with billet links. have a new steering rack fitted last month. i have tried to wiggle the exhaust pipes they are tight. i have not changed the front or rear struts or springs, they are original so have done about 118000 kms (73321 miles ). could it be front wheel hubs and bearings ? or damaged or loose K member ? worn engine and or gear box mounts ? drive shaft ? trying to sort it out myself before last resort of taking it to my mechanic whom is an hours drive away. an ideas guys of what i need to look for or test ?

Jack the car up by the control arm as close to the wheel and tire as possible.
Wiggle the wheel as many ways as possible. Next take a long crow bar and pry and lift up between the tire and the pavement If it's a hub, tie rod, ball joint etc. that should tell you. It has to be done wit the wheel in the air and the suspension loaded with the weight of the car. That's why the jack has to be as close to possible as under the ball joint.

thanks jcar302
i have done the wiggle test ect. and seems ok, but when i turn the wheel left then stop you hear a knock then same again when you turn wheel to right and stop you hear a knock. this happens on both front wheels. so is that normal or is the hub worn ?

I had a similar issue and mine ended up being control arms, followed by new struts... My struts completely went out at 110k miles (probably sooner than that)
My gut is telling me that if you have replaced everything you listed, something has to be loose. |

yep that's what i thought , something loose like the exhaust.
i have gone over all the A arm bolts ect.. and all are torqued properly. its hard to explain but its like a loose exhaust knock / rattle if that makes sense but seems like its on the left side. i have ruled out the sway bar end links because i have replaced them and torqued and used locktite following STB06-009. im thinking of just buying new Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly and new front struts and pulling everthing out ( like A arms ect. ) and put everyting back together and cross my fingers.

oh ... i also read when doing research that the the hub nuts may not have been torqued properly when i had new front disc's fitted and / or may have come loose...

Fixed.
One of the front lower A Arm bolts wasn't properly torqued.
