Default Q: Max Grip fluid change? - 2005 S281

I have a 2005 s281 #525 with the max grip differential, time for a fluid/oil/grease change back there. Does the max grip take some sort of special additive and recommendations on what grease to put in there, thanks for the advice...

How many miles on the differential? Probably no need to change it.

I believe it takes 75w-140w Synthetic with a bottle of friction modifier.

The question is if the maxgrip is a clutch type or helical (Torsen type) differential. I have heard both ways. Clutch would use the synthetic 75w-140 with friction modifier while the helical gear diff would you use standard mineral oil without friction modifier. I have yet to see a picture of the maxgrip so if you open it up, post up some pictures.

It's more Saleen BS.. They stuck in there whatever they had on the shelf and called it a maxgrip. Mine was a Eaton screw type, another 06 Extreme was a Ford racing clutch pack type. Lameness..

vehicle has about 25k miles on it....So basically, no idea what i need to put in until pull the cover and inspect... Don't know if I can tell the difference between torsen/eaton... Is there a brand stamping somewhere?

This is a picture of a clutch type next to a helical type differential. You will notice that the clutch type (on the left) is somewhat open in the center. You can see spider gears and the spring. Your version may have coil springs instead, but the principle is the same. The diff on the right is a helical diff (Eaton Trutrac). I am assuming that you have the standard diff cover so you will need to remove it to change the oil anyway. You could buy both types of oil and return what you don't need so you don't have to make multiple trips.

There is really no need to change the fluid with that low of miles on it. Personally I wouldn't change it.

^ this. Wouldn't hurt to change, but probably isn't necessary.

Nothing like digging up an 8 year old thread.

My 05 has 25k miles on her. (Just bought her).

While I've read change at 50k miles, doesn't say or X years.

Is it a straight 50k miles to be changed no matter how old?

After not be able to get what Max Grip differential was in my 08 Extreme I pulled to find it was a Detroit True-Trac which made me happy as I had blown a Torsen in my '06 race car. Would not recommend Torsen if you are doing hard launches

Felt it wasn't worth to take a chance, ended up having the shop change all the oils/fluids including the Max Grip and glad I did as the shop said that it was low about 1 quart, which scared the hell out of me.

No obvious leaks, but maybe after 16 year it evaporated (?).

At least now, I'll be checking it once a year when the engine oil is changed.
