Default Q: Engine swap? - 2000 S281

I just purchased a 2000 N/A saleen. I purchased it with a bad engine.

Is there an easy swap out to an upgraded engine or do i just replace with the original 4.6 2 valve?

Ideas/thoughts?

Hi! Congratulations on your new purchase and to your first Saleen Mustang.

The 4.6 liter 2-valve engine used in the 1999-2004 Ford Mustang GT were known as the "PI" engine. "Performance Improved."

If I remember correctly, the 1999-2000 Mustang GT used a 4.6 PI engine sourced from the Ford truck line, while the 2001-2004 Mustang GT used a 4.6 PI sourced from the Ford car line.

The 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt Edition was the lone 1999-2004 Ford Mustang 4.6 liter 2-valve car to have an upgraded/uprated power figure do to model specific induction parts.

If you want "easy," find a replacement 4.6 "PI" engine. These are 4.6 2-valve engines used after 1998.

Your S281 has Saleen installed underdrive pulleys, keep these pulleys after you remove the original engine.

Good luck to you.

appreciate it, but probably not something I going to go with. If I was more mechanically inclined I would look into the coyote swap.

These days I’d go with a 4v motor from an 03-04 Cobra. Best bang for the buck.

First i'd make sure the engine is done.
NA 4.6 engines are pretty durable.

As saleen556 said, best would probably be a terminator swap, but that's going to get costly.

The coyote swap is far more difficult, will make less power and be more expensive.

Worst case scenario just find another 4.6 front 99-04 and just drop it in. If you aren't paying labor I wouldn't be surprised if it could be done for less than a grand.

The terminator swap without labor will likely cost you $7500+.

Find out what’s wrong with yours if you can like someone said before. I just pulled my 04 SC setup out for a termi swap (have two holes in my block due to thrown rod). Engine had 18k and most mods I had are less than 3 yrs old.
Pulled my engine yesterday so if you’re doing it yourself and have any questions hit me up. I found a great 1 hour video on YouTube that was really helpful

I’m parting mine out check the FS section if there’s anything you’d like hit me up.
