Default Would you?

I have an opportunity to buy a 2003 Saleen 281 Speedster. It has 170k miles...has been ran pretty hard, but runs. Lots of jeri-rigging and interior is pretty rough. Body isn't too bad. 1 Small rust spot and right rear quarter needs work. He's asking $6k. Should I take the plunge?

I would say this is a "tribute" or "clone" car. So, value is that of a Mustang GT in this condition.

I would agree with Dave. I’m sure it was nice when it was new and someone did a pretty decent job with the clone.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the things I see that stand out are plaque under hood in wrong location, don’t think the stock seat covers were ever embroidered with Saleen logo, wrong center caps, side scoops are wrong.

Pictures are hard to tell but they look like stock GT calipers with Saleen logo.

Some of the body panel alignments are out of whack and it seems to have had paint work because of different shades.

I would say if you want to clean it up some and make it look somewhat better and drive it go for it. If it was “real” and you want it perfect, and restore it there are others to be had in better shape for less money than you will have invested in paint, interior and motor ect…. But if you want to save it it because it was real might be worth it. I hate the thought of not saving an original….

A clone is not worth that in my opinion…..its just a GT with "some" Saleen parts.

Good Luck!

Default Maybe not

As stated before, this may be a really nice tribute/clone. Another thing that sticks out to me is that this is an N/A car and I don't see the Saleen underdrive pulley set (red pulleys). It does have an aftermarket set installed but from what I understand all N/A cars got the Saleen pulleys. I probably wouldn't get into this car unless we were talking about 2 grand or something where there was room to get it on the road again and have fun with it. Ok good luck let us know what comes of it.

If you have time to restore it, go and purchase it. I think it's going to be a very interesting project. The wheels are nice, but I guess the tires have to be replaced. You should check out Nitto tires NT555 G2, Toyo tires Proxes R888R, and Michelin tires Pilot Sport 4S.
