Default SuperShaker Install - Thoughts???

Another question... I am thinking of saving money this winter for the supershaker or maybe just buying a few parts like headers and off-road X, of course I will still need a tune. What is your opinion on this? I would assume I will want/need the exhaust with the supershaker anyway. What would you guys do? Which first?

I had Bassani Long Tube Ceramic Headers and X-pipes, Aluminum Drive Shaft a year before I had the Super Shaker.
Last winter (January I sent the PJ to JDM Engineering in NJ to install the Super Shaker, GT500 Fuel System and Custom tune.

Results were:
483 RWHP / 464RWTQ @3000rpm
Boost is 8PSI @ 60%

Thanks Bruce! So you don't have the 10.5 psi (3.4" i think) pulley? Any reason other than reliability?

I was happy with an increase 123 RWHP and 114 RWTQ. We could have easliy increase the boost by changing pulleys and tweaking the tune to go to 525HP but I didn't see the sense, just me.
Oh yea, in the Spring I did put in a McCleod HD Clutch Assembly.

Ah ok. Cool...

Yea now I'm thinking I may do as you did... start with the basics- headers, x pipe, clutch, driveshaft, and save for the charger. At least then the small stuff will already be finished.

That's not a bad approach, but the clutch should go in after the Shaker.

Here is a link that will show you how my PJ went from NA to SC.

Alright cool, that may be more than I want to tackle anyway... I don't have a lift. When you did your LTs and X pipe did you get your tune right away or no? I live quite a few hours from the nearest shop that could tune my PJ.

I used a standard SCT Tune with no customizing. When I finished, I had it dynoed at Tasca Performance Center. It produced 360HP and 350TQ at the rear wheels.

Wow, that's awesome. Any reason why you went with the aluminum driveshaft (other than the obvious weight difference)? I'm assuming it's a one piece? Do you just get rid of the bracket that supports the two piece in the middle?

Any other bolt ons you would recommend for these cars? CAI is about all that's left, right?

Yep, its a one piece weight and it does help increase HP. I had a C&L racer CAI which was removed when the Super Shaker was installed. You could keep your air box and not go with a CAI and save the money since its only temporary anyway.

Oh ok. Good thinking... So when you order the SCT you just tell them your car and what mods you have (i.e. LTs and X)? I would assume they'll give you a mail order 93 oct tune?

I'm sure by know SCT has develop even better programs for the PJ. When I did my PJ it was early on around mid 2007 or so.

JimIII@JDM if you see this, clear out some of your PMs. The system won't allow me to send you anymore because your box is full. LOL!

I sent a cry out to JimIII.

It may be worth noting that stored PMs for Registered Users maxes-out at 99; it's increased to 1000 for SOEC Members.

So I exchanged some PMs with Jr @ JDM yesterday and got some quotes for the supershaker kits. I am waiting on a quote for the LTs, X and a tune. I am thinking more towards the latter so I will have at least something to do this winter.

Has anyone installed LTs on this car? I would assume this is the same as any of the 05-09 cars. I will be browsing those forums for pictures or a write-up on the job.

I have Bassani Long Tube Ceramic Headers and X-pipes which a mated to the original Saleen system (pipes, mufflers and tips). Had to cut approximately 10 inches off the existing pipes.

Wow that looks like really good quality. Is the sound much different? Louder I would assume, but does it sound... different? I have never had a mustang that I actually kept the cat-back but I would keep the stock on this car for sure. I love the sound of the edelbrock mufflers.

I'm glad you told me about having to cut the existing pipes, probably not something I can make happen in the garage (and seal it of course).

Yea, you're car sounds sweeeet man!!! I'm definetely going headers and X this winter. Jr gave me a quote on the kit w/ a tune so I will probably be giving him a call in the coming months...

So, compared to how these cars run stock... can you tell me how it ran with only the exhaust and then with the SS as well? I don't necessarily mean performance because yea, thats a given... how about idle, temperature, detonation, etc., things like that. Is the reving still as smooth as it was stock? Does it pop or anything back through the intake on deceleration? Do you run ONLY 93 oct? Although I've had a couple high performance vehicles (500-600 fwhp), I'm sort of new to the boost world, per se.

I guess what I'm trying to say is will driveability be exactly the same as it is stock?

I went from around the high 320s in HP and 3teens in TQ to 360HP and 350TQ by changing to a Bassani Headers and X-pipes, C&L Racer CAI and SCT Tune. Much more enjoyable than stock.
The SS with GT500 Fuel System and Custom Tune increased HP by 120 and TQ by 120. Now the PJ is enjoyable and quick!

So until you "get into it" (with the exception of sound), you would think it was stock?

Looks stock until you open the hood. Well the sound would only tell you it wasn't stock if you had heard other PJs and since they tend to be rare most people have not heard one so they would not be able to tell the distance.
I sould also tell you that I have a one piece Aluminum Driveshaft and a MGW short throw shifter. Neither would change the sound, however, the driveshaft helps with weight and HP.

Thanks Bruce! How much better is the shifter over the saleen short throw?

Yea I would never change the looks of the PJ, that's what it's all about. How about the way she drives, does it "feel" the same as stock other than the obvious power?

No comparison to the MGW and it has almost limitless adjustments. Go to their website an check it out.
Well I also changed out the upper control arms since they were Ford OEMs. It handles much better now. I can take exits in fourth gear and it will take the tight curves very nicely.

I wish Dave. Dana was the spokesperson for Este Lauder Mustang Colonge. She and a camera crew use the PJ in a photoshoot after a car show.

Bruce pretty much steered you in the right direction. I had JDM do the supershaker install on mine as well but i went with the 3.2 pulley. I had them install kooks LT's with an x-pipe also, along with a new fuel pump & 60lb injectors. The PJ runs like nothing i've been in before. JDM did quality work. I also had them install the Techco Watts-Link system as well. You won't be disappointed at all with the supershaker....

That sounds EXACTLY like what I want. What kind of HP TQ numbers are you making and @ how much boost? Do you run ONLY 93 octane?

Why did you put a different Watts-Link on the car? Do you do any kind of racing?

Here's the numbers:
HP: 511
TQ: 465
Boost: 10.5

I only run 93 octane, nothing less. I changed the Saleen Watts-Link to the Techco unit because there's been some owners that have been having parts failure problems with that unit, plus there's a TSB for the Saleen version. Techco's is very well designed & I haven't had any issues with it at all, plus Techco is operated by former Saleen employees that were part of the design process of the Saleen Watts-Link. All in all, the car has tremendous power but yet easy enough to drive around town. No complaints with this setup at all!
