Default Q: What shifter comes stock on a Saleen?

2000 model S281SC. What comes factory didn't Saleen put short throws on these?? Mine has a Momo knob but I'm wondering if it's a stock style shifter. Doesn't seem like a short throw.

The shift mechanism was produced by Hurst. A production-style short shift.

Whatever is in it I would swap for a MGW. I had it on my T45 and now on my T56. Excellent short throw shifter if you are looking for a new one, or you can keep the Hurst if that is want is on it now.

Not sure what's on it now I know I don't like it. Doesn't seem short enough throw. So I'll probably look into the MGW I've heard many good things about them. What tranny is in this car?? Also what know comes with the MGW or does it not come with a knob?? Did Saleen put a different know on them. Or what do you guys recommend for knob??
Also something that's been bothering me bad. Can any of you guys tell me why my car hangs up in reverse?? I don't know if it has something to do with the shifter itself, or if it's the tranny. I do know it has a new clutch in it. Have no idea what kind of course. But sometimes after I go in reverse, the shifter will get stuck in reverse I can't get it out. I'm afraid I'm going to break the shifter. I just have to keep feathering the clutch and yanking on the shifter trying to get it out of reverse and eventually I can get it to pop out. Doesn't do it all the time. Just sometimes.

Your car was originally produced with a Borg Warner T45. It was not uncommon to see Mustangs with this transmission in for repair (or replacement) when Ford warranties were active.

In 2001 Ford Motor Company switched to the Tremec TR-3650. It was not uncommon to hear of a T45 car receiving a TR-3650 under warranty.

Best to physically check to see which transmission you have.

No the MGW shifter will not come with a knob but you can put the Momo knob on it. If you have questions about your T45 you might contact these people:

http://www.thet45source.com/index.php

You may have a bad synchronizer in it.

Check out this page on their blog about the reverse: http://blog.thet45source.com/

Man after checking that link out it looks like there is a very good chance I've got the T45 still in mine because I'm having all those problems. Getting stuck in reverse and not wanting to go into other gears smoothly at times. Darn it I knew there would be a weak link somewhere in this car everything else was done too right LOL. Thanks for the info bro looks like you identified my problem. Looks like T45 source has a rebuild kit, or you can send in your to be rebuilt, or do a core swap. I kind of think sending mine would be best since I know it has only 60K miles on it. Whole car is clean enough to eat on. Just the gear problem....

I think Ford should have unlimited power train warranty and fix it free LOL.

They did fix it, they changed the transmission to a different model mid year in 2001. That is why I have a T45 and not the TR-3650.

I guess they fixed it on future cars, but us with the old T45 that's getting hung up in gears and not switching as smooth as it should. There's nothing we can do except pretty much rebuild the tranny with better parts correct? Since obviously the factory warranty is long gone.

The original owner of my car broke the tranny at 30K miles and stuck a TKO-600 in it. I'm not complaining at all.

RunninPony,

Saleen used that leather Momo knob on your year Saleens. They also used some carbon fiber knobs on the S351s.

Yeah I had read somewhere else they used Momo knobs. I think I'll get a MGW short shifter, and look on eBay for a Momo leather replacement like Saleen used. Mine is wore out. And it's loose too it won't tighten.

Default Q: What shifter comes stock on a Saleen?

I never could get the Momo knob to stay tight after I swapped shifters (Steeda tri-ax). I got a cobra replica knob from Latemodel Resto. Call Mark at Performance Autosport if you want an original Momo. He has one hanging on the wall still.

This. If you're attached to the stock shift knob then I've heard you can't reuse it with the MGW. If you don't care then it's no big deal of course.

If your Momo knob is regularly loose and/or sloppy. Look into purchasing a Momo knob install kit. This kit will include new knob o-rings/bushings and set screws.

95-0122 is running a Tri-Ax shift assembly, using a stock Ford lever with solid Steeda bushings topped by the OE Saleen/Momo knob. No issues and looks original.

the momo knobs are universal. they use set screw to hold it... which makes a very loose feeling.

one trick to do is find a factory plastic screw in knob and mill/grind it down to where its just a tube thatll fit in the momo knob and the set screws will pinch on that and youll be able to actually screw in on and itll get rid of that loose feeling.

I like that... That is a great fix!
