Default Q: Can I use 1984-86 Mustang SVO Koni reds? - 1986 Saleen

86-0064 appears to have had it's original Koni's replaced with AGX Struts and Shocks at one point in it's history. I want to replace them while I am restoring it but not sure which direction to go. I have seen a couple of different responses through the project threads ( 86-0026 and one additional 2R car that was redone recently).

My question is, can I use the 1984-86 SVO Koni Red shocks and struts from Performance Parts Inc?

http://www.performancepartsinc.com/

I have CC plates and 86 spindles currently.

Thanks

SVO Koni reds for the rear are correct.

The SVO Koni Reds for the front struts are incorrect, as they are different between 4-Cyl and V-8. I think the correct version is available from Koni directly or at TireRack.com.

SVO struts are unique, not the same as regular 4 cyl. It was 87 when the mounting changed on the V8 struts compared to the 4 cyl.

this info is 84-86 SVO and 87-93 Saleen(not 84-86) specific:

1) 84 SVO Koni rear shocks and struts are not the same as 85-86 SVO

2) while 4-cyl and V-8 struts are different, the SVO used Lincoln lower control arms and brakes. the SVO struts and "onion head mounts" are the same as the 87-93 Saleen

3) These brakes became the Ford SVO Motorsports 5 lug conversion brake system; the very same one Saleen used.

so..(shhh it's a secret: SVO and Lincon brakes are the same as Saleen)

When I ordered new struts for my SVO I order 87-93 5.0L struts... they fit fine. I originally went with 4-cyl struts and found they fit my 85GT but not my SVO... I was puzzled too me a while and a lot of research

The original red KONI's for 86 and 87 Saleens are different from SVO parts. In fact, the strut top adjustables are not available from Koni any more. They offer 'externally' adjustables but they require you to physically remove the strut from the car, compress the strut and rotate to change characteristics. Seriously- who's going to do that on a regular basis?

I will have my original 87 Saleen Koni's rebuilt and reinstalled at some point to retain this feature.
