Q: Underhood Padding?
Hi All,
I have a real dumb question.... What benefit does the hood padding serve and has anyone removed theirs? Could removing it, over time, ruin the hood paint because of excess heat or has anyone experiences problems with the paint on the hood? Any info is appreciated. |

I removed mine, because of the cold air rubbing on it, but it is UGLY. So going to put back on. Actually, I believe that in the event of a fire, that thing slows the fire down, but not truly sure. Have not seen any outter paint problems due to being off. My hood is fiberglass. I want to change hoods. 😞

Mines fibreglass. It's probably the n/a hood that has it.

I take that back heat exchanger hoods don't have it. Forget that some are fiberglass.

As stated above. If your have a S281 3-Valve without a factory installed Saleen vented hood, your Saleen will have the Ford insulator pad.
If you have a factory Supercharged Saleen, with or without the Saleen vented hood, the Ford pad was removed during conversion. 2007 S302 PJs do not have an insulator pad. 2008 Heritage 302 models do have a hood pad. |

Thanks for all the replies... I guess I botched my question up a bit and for that my apologies.
I do have a NA stock fiberglass hood ( non vented) and was wondering if removing the padding would / could cause any paint related issues. Not too worries about excess noise. I recently purchased a strut tower brace and when I close the hood, I can see the middle of the hood push up a little as well as the sides of the hood are not flush with the top of the fender which leads me to believe that the padding is the culprit i.e.; remove it, problem fixed. Again, thanks all for the replies! |

Hi! The stock Ford Mustang hood is aluminum. Yes, remove the padding since you installed a brace that arches into the pad.
Saleen removed the padding for Supercharged cars that ran the OE hood since clearance was an issue for the taller intake. The hood pad is a combination paint protector and fire suppressant. Removing it should not do you harm. |

I also have the stock hood. The padding had to be removed when the supercharger was added due to clearance issues. I think the padding looks terrible anyway. The problem was that the Tungsten paint underneath was not clearcoated; so that did not look very good either. When I had part of my hood painted matte black, I also had the body shop paint the underside of the hood black. It looks much better and it was not very expensive to do.
