Restoration of 02-0532 Saleen
I purchased this saleen about 2 weeks ago.
It has 95k original miles on the body and about 20k miles on the engine. I am officially the third owner of it. Car has changed a lot since it was new, but here's the specs I got from Jim Dvorak on it when it left the Saleen plant - 02-0532 S281 Mustang Supercharged P42 GT Coupe Exterior Torch Red Interior Dark Currently the car has - Built engine with forged crank, billet rods, ported heads, lumpy cams, P51 intake, HP performance twin turbo kit (57mm sized Precision turbos). It also has a viper-spec T56 transmission and McCloud street twin clutch. Built rearend with 31 spline axles, c-clip eliminators and 3.55 gears. AMS500 boost controller. Fast forward to today. 1. I changed the oil and filter. 2. I swapped out the factory wheels (18-9") for a new set I had with Nitto tires (18-9" front and rear with 265-35 front and 285-35 rear tire sizes). 3. I installed a backseat from a 2004 cobra. It is black leather and suede. This matches the Corbeau black micro suede and leather front seats. Previous owner had removed the seats, brackets, and seat belts for a rear-seat delete kit. So I had to locate the brackets and seats. Now I am looking for rear seat belts in black/charcoal. 4. I took off the Momo shifter knob and installed a polished Tremec 6 speed knob. 5. I removed the 3 gauge pod on the dash and installed a Autometer 2 gauge pod. Similar to the factory one the car had long ago, but was MIA by the time I bought the car Next I have to - Perform a brake job (new pads and possibly new rear rotors). Change spark plugs. Radiator flush and new hoses. New serpentine belt and probably a newer tensioner. Install a catch can and lines from valve covers for a breather kit. Clean / Detail underhood including some polishing and powder coating. Purchase and install 3rd brake light (mine is pink/white). Later on repaint car.....clear coat has some issues. So I will update as I go along. Feel free to comment/encourage! Haha. Ryan |

Looks awesome! Doesn't look like you need much restoration! I'm just finishing up a rebuild on my 02.

I plan to get the intake polished and either polishing or powder coating the valve covers (still on the fence about that). Here's a picture of that style of intake (P51) from a few years ago when I had one on my 98 setup. I think this will look nice under the hood of the 02. What do you think? |

Well I have a project update for today.
It's both good and bad news unfortunately. The good news - Car passed inspection without any issue and I was able to get a tag at DMV. Ordered a custom plate (Turbo 2V) that should be here in a few weeks. The bad news - I filled the car up with gas this afternoon and parked it in my driveway. About 2 hours later I came out and smelled gas odor very strong around the car. I found that my Glen's Sleeper gas tank is leaking. Not sure if this is a first or if it had this problem before. So tomorrow I will be jacking it up and trying to determine the leak without hopefully having to remove the entire tank. Full of gas too! |

Today I did a few more small things to the car.
For some reason the previous owner had installed light silver (Opal?) seat belts on the Corbeaus. I just happened to have a set of dark charcoal ones laying around, so I installed them. Next the windshield wiper arms were pretty faded. I sprayed them in black lacquer and added new wiper blades. I also gave it the 1st bath today. BEFORE - AFTER - |

how do you like the cars power?

It's a very good running car. Boost is turned down to 14 pounds until I get a chance to check car over on the dyno (timing and air/fuel).
When I got it, brand new Mickey Thompson drag radials were on the back. It hooked very well and pulled hard. I have since put Nitto ZR tires on it as it will be my any weather driver, and it spins really easily. I've owned a twin turbo mustang for a few years now prior to this one. That car had a 6 speed at one time also before I went to an automatic (4R70W). I can tell you that this car is laggy until around 3,800 rpms when it starts to build boost. Part of it is the 3.55 gears and the other is the manual transmission. With an automatic, the laggy response would diminish and the car would pull much harder. However for my street car, I plan to keep the T56. I will post some videos soon using my GoPro cameras to give you an idea of how this car sounds and runs. It is fun to drive. Ryan |

Some quick updates -
Got my new 3rd brake light replacement in from Stage 3 motorsports. Fit great. I took the easy way to change it instead of trying to remove the spoiler. Just cut the wires and taped them onto the new ones. NOTE - This tape was too thick and would not go thru the hole easily. So I took the wires and soldered them together and easily pulled them thru. START - I also tuned up with the following items - New NGK TR6 spark plugs (gapped at .030"). New 180* thermostat (replaced 160* that was in it). Radiator flush and new antifreeze. New serpentine belt. Here's a quick video of the car idling. |

Small update -
I didn't like how the Autometer dual pod dash kit looked (didn't quite match color and did not lay perfectly flat). Therefore I switched back to the 3 gauge mount that came on the car when I bought it. I moved 1 of the 2 wideband A/F gauges to the triple pod and removed the other completely. Found some INTERESTING wiring methods used prior to me getting the car. Same colors had been used for positive and negative. That is a huge No-No in the electrical world! So I rewired it all and also removed a N2MB wide open throttle box that I will never use. Here's some pics of my disassembly! |

Good luck bud and im jealous. Great looking car and fastlane is a great company just wish i was closer to them. Sounds like your not having as much good luck with wiring tho and sometimes I can't stand dealing with others hack jobs and sold cars bc of it.
Doing a hellion 76mm on my bullitt spring time but mmr heads and cams this winter/now if I find motivation. 5spd and hello LAG here. 4.10's now but will change down the road

There are several interior dash paints too. SEM paint makes the best interior paint. We painted our Speedsters pillar pod to match the dash and it looks great!

Few more updates.
Got the trunk trim piece ordered off ebay and installed. Not sure why this was M.I.A., but it's all good now. Before - After - Also figured out why my car would leak gas if filled up over 3/4 of a tank. Turns out the previous owner had put a rubber grommet (cap) over the outlet of the stock fuel hat. This had deteriorated badly (see picture). So when gas was over 3/4 it would basically run out of this spot. I took the time to cap this line outlet off on both ends with new grommets (caps). I also installed a new hat to tank seal. Since I dropped the tank, I went ahead and replaced the filler neck grommet also. Works like a champ now! Filled it up and NO MORE LEAKS!! Yay! Here's a few more pics. Transmission jack works great for holding the tank and dropping it / reinstalling it! |

Got to check the car on the dyno tonight.
Found only making right at 11 pounds of boost. Boost controller is not working properly. So all runs were on wastegate spring. Still made 570rwhp! At 18 pounds it should really come alive!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx6ZbUWbBak |

Found some issues today when I started tracing my boost controller lines. One of them was not connected to the wastegate properly.
So I am going to redo all the lines and send my AMS500 off to NLR to get tested. Here's a quick video from today when I was chasing down some squeaks and working on the boost lines. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgwTB...MALUHg&index=1 |

Back a few years ago, when the P51 just came out, I had a 2valve combo in my 98 saleen. I tested it up against the stock PI intake that already had a intake spacer, 70mm accufab throttle body and upper plenum. The P51 intake picked up over 28 rwhp. I also tested the Typhoon intake and I actually lost 18 rwhp from the stock PI intake. I settled on the P51 and never looked back. Now I have another one on my 2002 saleen as it came with the car. I don't plan to change it. |

That P51 intake, does it move the power band up in the RPM range? Do you lose a little low end torques as well?

I took the time today to install the T56 reverse lockout box.
Basically since our cars did not come with the T56, we don't have our computer controlling the solenoid on the side of the transmission that keeps you from engaging reverse at speed. Therefore, this solenoid is always engaged and makes it VERY difficult to put the car in reverse, even at a complete stop. I bought the kit from GRC Performance in California. I installed it in about 1 hour yesterday. Easy connections. 2 wires to VSS/OSS sensor, 1 wire to +12 volts, 1 wire to ground, and 2 wires to the reverse solenoid. Basic operation is it applies 12 volts to the solenoid when you are between 0mph and 5mph. When I first installed mine, I didn't notice any difference. So I took the solenoid off the transmission. I found that when applying 12 volts, it did not disengage (or make a clicking noise). I took the plunger apart and found the inner spring was in a bind. This could possibly have been caused by never engaging the solenoid properly. I cut out a small portion of the spring and reinstalled. I hit it with 12 volts and the plunger moved back and forth and clicked. I reassembled to the transmission and tested it out. SMOOTH as BUTTER! Much easier to get into reverse now! Best $113 I've spent! Link to item - http://cart.grcperformance.com/oscom...87019388bb8409 Link to instructions - http://www.grcperformance.com/Instru...%20Lockout.pdf |

Some project updates -
I ordered some more parts for the Saleen and fixed a couple of problems. Parts - Cross-drilled and slotted rear rotors Ceramic brake pads Red and Black paint I removed my old and rusty rear rotors and painted my calipers and brackets. I then installed a fresh set of ceramic brake pads. Cleaned up the look significantly. Didn't have the front pads in stock, so I haven't changed those yet. BEFORE - AFTER - Next I got my boost controller figured out. The wires that run from the controller to the solenoids had been cut where the previous owner ran them thru the firewall. Replaced the wiring and now the AMS500 works great. At 16.5 pounds of boost, the car made 678rwhp on 93 octane!! I didn't want to push it too much on boost since it's been in the 20 degree digits around here! The extra 100rwhp makes the car a monster on the street! Some quick updates -
1. A couple of weeks ago, I was on my way to work and the Saleen started smoking like a freight train! I got to work (only 2 miles away) and found my Turbo Drain Pump had stopped working. This pump is needed as my turbos are mounted low behind the front bumper, and the oil needs to be pumped back to the oil pan. When the pump stopped working, the oil backed up into the turbos and basically overflowed into the exhaust. Got a replacement pump installed and problem solved. 2. My intake gaskets had a very small leak/seep that would cause the rear spark plugs (#3 and #4) to get water in them and cause a misfire. I removed the upper intake and replaced the gaskets with new ones to solve the problem. 3. While my intake was off, I figured it was a good time to do some underhood touch ups. I had the intake polished and lower was powder-coated black. I then had the valve covers (moroso aluminum) powder-coated red. Should have it back together this week. Here's a teaser pic - |
