Question Q: 1991 Calypso Green Saleen Mustang?

Looking for information, read an article that only one was produce in 1991 with the color calypso green. Is this true? I can’t find anything on that.

Yes, this is true.

Calypso Green was a mid-year color introduction for the 1991 Ford Mustang. Standard colors on the 1991 Saleen Mustang were, Black, Oxford White, Bright Red, and Twilight Blue.

The lone 1991 Calypso Green Saleen Mustang was ordered as an SC Edition.

Standard colors for the 1991 Saleen SC were, Black, Oxford White, and Bright Red.

So, the 1991 Calypso Green Saleen Mustang was a special order car with an extra cost option of using a non-standard Saleen exterior color.

Vehicle still exists.

91-0017SC is the Calypso Green SC. Green paint, silver chevrons, silver DP wheels, cloth tu-tone Saleen SC interior/seating.

The original 91-0017SC.

There was a Calypso Green clone; possibly assembled by Saleen Performance Parts. Or, someone had a good time ordering a number of Saleen equipment items from SPP.

This vehicle was green paint, gold chevrons and grey FloFit seating covers that were slightly different than what was installed in most 1990-91 Saleen Mustang conversions.

The Calypso Green, vintage build, clone Saleen Mustang.

The 1991 green "clone" Saleen was featured in one or two "owner's rides" magazine features from the early 1990s.

These were run within Mustang-theme or Ford-theme magazines during / around 1993.

This is the one I bought. The clone I guess. And yes I was told it went to saleen performance parts to get all the work done and ssp but I have no paperwork. Thank you for the info. You Deff know your Saleen’s. The reason I’m also asking is because all the parts are saleen the way they should be. So I was confused about it.

No worries.

From around late 1990 through around 1995, Saleen Performance Parts (SPP) was a separate entity from Saleen Autosport / Saleen Enterprises / Saleen Performance (the production car business).

Even though SPP built the 1990-91 Saleen SCs (after Saleen vehicle production moved to Cars & Concepts) and then SPP was again tapped to start building the 1992 MY Saleen Mustangs... it was a separate entity.

Historically, I believe this close (but separate) existence sometimes causes confusion.

That makes all the sense. Thank you so much for the clarification. And that’s why there’s no car number on this car. I thought maybe when it got re sprayed it was never installed. The car drives amazing. I love it. Maybe one day I’ll get my all time favorite 89 White saleen.

One thing you may want to do... contact Mr. Greg Wackett and ask him to make you a copy of the "reader rides"-type articles that were written about your vehicle.

Afterwards see if you can find the owner, since the owners name is in the text, then look for those names in California. The location of this owner may also be in the text from the early 1990s article(s).

One thing to note, the hood decals are incorrectly installed on the passenger side.

I'm not a Saleen vehicle expert, if you locate one, here are some things to pick their brain over.

Some believe the upper SC strut bars went from black paint to grey metallic paint mid 1991. Yours appears to be black.

The Vortech supercharger serial number will give you a point of reference to age.

The lone curious item I see, are the seat covers. I don't recall seeing a FloFit seat with just piping on the center section. For 1990-91, the open / netted headrest was a Saleen item, but the single color seat covers were the same as the over-the-counter version sold to anyone.

(Unlike the 1987-89 Saleen/FloFit covers.)

It would be interesting to know what timeline had these non-piped side bolstered seats made.

The popular belief is, your car was probably updated with the chrome Speedlines, Vortech and white faced cluster at a later time. 1994?

Maybe if saw two mod sessions... or maybe too... it was slowly converted from 1991 through mid 1990s.

Read the articles and see when they were printed.

As you can see from 90-0022SC and 91-0016SC, these both were ordered with single color leather seating. Both feature straight side piping (no curve) and sightly different back pattern.

More similar to the seat pattern cut of the 1989 Saleen SSC.

One might presume the single color leather seats were an off-the-shelf version, regardless... differences differences.

Thank you for all the info. I will try to contact mr Greg Wackett for the readers ride. I didn’t notice the hood decal lol. All the bars on the car including the engine strut bar are some type of dark silver/gray. I have to check the serial # on the supercharger when I get home tonight.

It is safe to figure the chrome Speedline wheels and the white gauge cluster became available by 1994.

At some point, the large(r) letter grey SALEEN intake was no longer available. You see the late(r) intakes on the anniversary cars (when optioned [Except #01]) and the Tim Allen RRR edition. Though, the 93-0001SC does have the large letter grey intake.

At some point the 1990-91 dual plane wing was no longer a serviced part either. Obsolete.

The odd-pipping front seats could be of 1992-94 (?) vintage.

Basically, I'm inferring it was a narrow window of time when all of this equipment was purchased.

Saleen Performance Parts publicly advertised the side chevrons in yellow, blue, silver with black or silver fades.

In around 1994 the parts listing for 1984-93 vehicles was updated to include black chevrons.

I do believe in the vintage magazine mention, it appears your cars does have a gold-look decal kit. Even if the photos are B&W.

As you know, in 1991 the Mustang LX side trim was still trim black, so we know the trim was repainted green and this is how the car appears in the magazine blurb.

Depending on when your vehicle had paint repair work and what areas were refinished, might impact which decals are still vintage.

I have faith in your ability to build out a timeline.

I will try to figure the year. The stickers are all gold and i know it took a long time to get them while the car was being built.

V-1 = the first series of Vortech superchargers.

00831 = Is the consecutive unit / production number.

My guess is... your supercharger compressor is probably a lower serial number than most of the factory 1992-93 Saleen Mustang with Vortech blowers.

If you are curious, research what sequence of Vortech serial numbers are on the compressors for the following vehicles...
  • 90-0012SC - Saleen SC
  • 91-0001 / 93-0002 - Saleen Mustang
This is your mission, if you choose to accept.

The super charger serial number dates the build of your vehicle in late 1992/early 1993! Just an FYI. Sorry about the family emergency

Thank you. Everything seems to be workin out.
Yeah the car had to be built around that time. I know I’m the third owner and the second owner only put about 200 miles. The car sat for a long time. Finally just put 4 new tires and new exhaust cat back. Still kept the cats. Car feels amazing. I went threw all the fluids and it drives so diff then my other mustang I had back in the day. I plan on enjoying it and drive it it. Not everyday but Deff every weekend.
