Steve Saleen's #001 SMS-Bondurant Camaro Unveiled: Auctioned for Charity at B-J Scott
Steve Saleen's #001 SMS-Bondurant Camaro Unveiled: Auctioned for Charity at B-J Scottsdale Tonight
The first SMS 620 Camaro has been completed at Steve Saleen's SMS Supercars in Corona, California, and it is now getting ready to go across the block at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is a special SMS-Bondurant edition, and the mission for this bright yellow Camaro is a noble one. In a joint effort with Saleen's former racing teammate Bob Bondurant and the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, it will be auctioned to raise money for Cox Charities and Make-a-Wish Foundation of Arizona. In a phone interview given to SOEC shortly after the completion of SMS 620 Camaro #001, Steve Saleen proudly stated, "at SMS Supercars, we now design and build performance lifestyle vehicles on all three American Musclecar platforms -- the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, and Chevrolet Camaro -- not too many others can say that!" This SMS-Bondurant 620 Camaro features a 6.2 Liter V8 engine with over 620hp and 525ft/lb of torque will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. All proceeds to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Arizona and Cox Charities, and it will be sold at approximately 8pm Thursday January 19, 2012. Cox Charities has awarded more than $3.4 million in grants to local non-profits focused on youth, education and technology. Funds are raised through Cox employee contributions, customer donations, and community partnerships with organizations like Barrett-Jackson. Every dollar raised goes directly back into the community. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/appli...&aid=443&pop=0 The Mothers Polish wheel cleaner commercial featuring HRE Wheels, SMS Supercars and Pirelli Tire will be airing during the SPEED Channel broadcast of the auction. Both the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving and SMS Supercars are marketing partners of Mothers. Each Black Label SMS vehicle gets a Mothers Detail Kit. Mothers is the sponsor of SOEC's Detailing Forum. |

When we went to the Motor Press Guild event this year, we drove a Suspension companies Camaro equiped with a well know big supercharger, full exhaust and suspension of course, and I was so disapointed it, i checked it back in after 1 lap on the track. It was sooo horible. But SMS did a great job with the lines on this car! Through and through, Im a Mustang Man!

Went for $100k. Being charity, there is no fees on this one.

What is the deal with the front and rear bumpers? It does not look too SMS? The front bumper looked like stock camaro bumper for a carbon fiber splitter.

Congrats to SMS on a nice build & for choosing an excellent charity to align yourselves with...
...have never been a fan of the "new" Camaro, but I really like what they did w/ this platform. They improved the looks dramatically.

Nice cheer for Steve -- and of course the Bondurant team and especially the winning bidder -- all for a great cause! Here's a link to the top of the story by Drew Phillips for Autoblog, with plenty of photos as it crossed the auction block: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/20/s...t-example-for/ . |

First, I don't want to take anything away from the incredibly nice gesture made by Steve and BB. A very kind and noble thing to do.
But am I the only one who thinks that this car bringing only $100k is acceptable? You figure this is the FIRST SMS Camaro. Isn't that worth a premium? If the car has a base price of around $65k, you add the S/C, the Bondarant package, etc., this car is probably approaching $100k retail. I would think a FIRST edition Saleen anything would bring a nice high premium over MSRP. Add the fact that its going for charity and for charities that help kids, and I would've thought this car should have sold for $250,000. And Uneedav8, you are right. The front bumper is not the same bumper shown in the renderings as car #1 or on the website. Tells me the molds didn't work out or the fit wasn't there or they just plain weren't ready. I hope Steve is disappointed. I sure would be. |

Nice Camaro! Still doesn't match the 2013 GT500 numbers though. Definitely looks much better then stock though.

In repsonse to my last post I present some evidence. I believe Steve and BB, and more importantly, the charities, got ripped off by Barrett Jackson.
The Galpin Motorsports Mustang that was auctioned for charity sold for $160,000. It's a cool car, but no where near has the pedigree and names behind it like a Steve Saleen or Bob Bondurant. Here is my beef. The Galpin car was auctioned for 4:14 before the hammer dropped. Here is the video: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/20/b...s-160-000-for/ The SMS Camaro was on the block for 1:23. Although from the video, it could have been a little longer and the video may have been edited slightly. Even so, I don't think the SMS Camaro got it's fair shake on the block, short changing two very deserving charities. Shame. |

I watched it go, and it was up there for quite a while. Bob and Steve were on stage, gave speeches, etc. They had the car and an extra signed hood. I wouldn't say they got screwed by BJ really- I think it's a combination of the car being a very custom vehicle that is going to only fit some people's taste.
Personally, I didn't like the car at all. The announcer on stage even sort of mocked the hood vents, which I find really cheap looking and cheesy.

I would have thought the car would go for more. First one off the line, signed hood, etc. Then again the economy sucks, so who knows.
I like the car. It is a shame those hood butterflies couldn't be more functional, but I guess with the knew carbon-trap air boxes, it is kind of hard to make butterflies and shaker hoods functional and still pass the new emissions requirements. Still the holes for these bitterflies need to be finished more, as in molded into the hood vs cut out of the hood...IMHO Still a beautiful car, for a Camaro... I do have a question though, is this going to be the new SMS camaro, or is this a one off? When do we get to see that new SMS blower? I think it looks cleaner and it appears that it requires less hood clearance. |

John, $100K is pretty respectable, and pulled more than Mario Andretti's Camaro for charity. This #001 car was finished enough, and at the 11th hour, just in time to ship to Arizona. This is indeed car #001, thus production of 2012 models of the SMS 620 Camaro has officially begun! 2013 models coincide with Job #1 of Camaro production during the summer, which also includes the convertible. |

I think the yellow Camaro is a 2011. Something rings in my ear that the 2012 model receives a GM corporate steering wheel. I think the 2012 Camaro has revised gauge fonts as well.

Even though it was announced as the "001" car, and the first SMS camaro. This car seems to be a one off in my opinion. The car looks incomplete. Front and rear bumpers looked like stock camaro. I am assuming 002 will look like the renderings.
