Default Q: Porting the Series VI? - Power Gains

Im contemplating having stiegemeier port my s/c. My questions is, with the mods I already have, will the engine live? I know the IAT's will be lower to help with detonation but will the increased power make the engine grenade?

I assume your talking about porting the blower lid.
No worries, I have pretty much the same mods and have been running around ported for a year.

I mean the entire blower, they claim it is a 50-55rwhp gain

I spoke to a few people about this before i had 281 motorsports service my S/C and was told that there would be no real gains to be had from doing this to the series VI.. Also Stieg will not work on the series VI last time i talked to them they don't have parts for it..

I would talk to Nightstalker about it, I believe that he did have the S/C ported by someone and could probably give you some good info.. Nice that they do it now, enough people must have called them about it!

I would not say this is even feasible. I call a bogus on this one specifically for the Series VI & VI.5. You could pick up a few hp possibly, but it would be absolutely minimal. I won't even offer the service. Port the lid....? No, get the VI.5 lid and reap its amazingness.

I've seen flow numbers of the new VI.5 lid, but have not seen comparisons between that lid and a ported VI lid. I'd be interested to know.

Based on CFM air flow testing after former engineers at Saleen said it wouldn't improve flow...I wanted to see it for my self and the CFM micro results said it all. We tested a few pullies, without digging up the data I can say I dont remember. But im certain we did low, mid and high boost. We also know that these blowers simply dont make much more air compression after 15psi which if i recall was somewhere around 15,000rpm. Dont hold me to the numbers, this was about 7 years ago.

^^^This.

Here are excerpts from a post by Jess Albright, Operations Manager at Speedlab/Revstone back in March 2010 -

“Just to clarify, there is no Series VI available anymore. Those castings and tools are gone. Everything from here on out is considered a VI.5……”

“Series VI.5 represents a series of changes to the original design. The first was the rear bearings, we changed those to make them way more durable and last much longer. Second we changed the snout bearings for the same reasons, third we changed the entire manifold housing, we made the new castings much cleaner through the runners, tighter bore dimensions for quieter operation, and machined out the back where the air flows through essentially porting the unit. The next change will be the lid….. After the lid we will be making the screws in house, we have some made up now and are doing testing on them as we speak, no date as to when those will go into retail units though….. We took everything that has been learned about the Series VI over the past 5 years and applied it to making the VI.5 better. I don't think you will be at all disappointed in this supercharger.”

My take on his comments is that except for the lid, any unit built since 2010 is, for all intents and purposes, a Series VI.5. Having said that, the manifold is essentially already ported by design and the VI.5 lid as well. The VI.5 lid flows better with fewer obstructions to create air turbulence and the only porting I can see would be to match a larger throttle body.

Well the lid is irrelevant in my case (Supershaker). I assume my unit is a Series VI, not the VI.5 mentioned above.

It just seems surprising as inefficient as these blowers are that there is no improvement to be found from a good port job. I'm a little disappointed

I really want to get all I can out of the Supershaker so I can keep my car as "Saleen" as I can. I don't want to use a different blower, so I'm looking for every advantage out of what I am working with. Recently purchased a 10% OD lower, larger headers, and some fuel system upgrades which will allow a switch to e85. If I can't get more out of the blower I guess I'll just have to use bigger pills!!

Thank you for your input!

Focus on traction so you can harness all that power you already have and are loosing for loss of traction, I guarantee if you drive enthusiastically you have lots of wasted horsepower.

I've cut 1.54 60'. It's harnessed.

Good work! You will see a bunch more power when you go to E85. Increased timing and the timing won't get pulled with higher intake temps so you have constant power the entire time. The back side of my supercharger was ported by Techco. Right where the lid connects to the supercharger. Not sure if it helps, but Techco thought it was a good idea.

Impressive! Your running slicks right? Ported & polished heads, larger valves? I mean heck, we can port your guy's superchargers if you want, you just won't see much.

Yeah I think eventually I will decide whether to go big bore or not and then have the heads ported and bump the compression. Since I can't make any more power with the blower I need to maximize everything else.

You could always put a turbo in front of the supercharger and do a compound boost setup :)

Why not just remove the Supercharger?

Best of both worlds. Instant torque of supercharger with top end of turbo. Personally I would just go twin turbo, but this way you keep the Saleen look.

Ya, but your causing a great resistance. Go Turbo / Centrifugal and love the boost and traction!

You keep talking about traction like it's impossible to get these things to hook. I make over 700 hp to the wheels and have no issues with traction. I dead hook second gear at a 7000 rpm WOT shift from first gear on street tires and hit mid 1.5 60s at the track with 17" drag radials. I also run road course and it may be tricky to keep it smooth with the instant boost but I have no traction issues.

I like the idea of turbos and centris, but I hate lag and love low end torque for street driving.

Getting rid of the Supershaker is not an option for me. I want to keep the "Saleen" aspect of the car.

Forgot about the super shaker. Couldn't make a turbo work with that. I saw someone on Facebook installed a 200 shot direct port nitrous system on their Saleen. That would be the ticket for more HP!

Josh,

You have a car that we / you set up to handle that kind of power. Remember, you have a Tru-trac differential, slicks, a set of Cortex RLCA (I believe) a Cortex Torque Arm, a Cortex Watts Link, a built drive line and suspension.....not many have that set up so for most traction IS an issue.

Then pour some serious love into the heads, huge headers, and lots of boost! We've been able to get some serious numbers when we build a dynamite set of heads!

Nitrous is part of the plan as well.
