Default Q: PJ S302 lifter noise?

I recently purchased a PJ and it seem to have a lot of lifter noise. Is this normal or acceptable? I did change the oil and filter.(Mobile1) I'm not a mechanic so it could be something else.

Thanks

Seems to be a common trait of these motors (Ford 4.6 3V).

It is documented that the first few PJ motors they built were so loud that they had to start over.

Appears to be combination of the Ford 3V, valve lash adjusters, aluminum pistons, piston slap, cams, cam phasers, no hood insulation, etc..

I also think that 5W30 Mobile1 seems to increase the noise level a bit.

Hi. #90 has had the same valve train noise since three thousand miles.Fifty nine thousand now.
My car runs awesome but I hate that noise. I tried to get saleen and my dealer to help but might as well have been talking to a tree.
This CAR IS A American Automobile ICON That I LOVE!! Everwhere I go people come and look ,take pictures and ask questions. I wish that saleen would do something about this. Many times my friends or?? have asked me about the lifter noise,it's a hard question to answer?? Not all three valve heads sound this way and I have listened to other pj's that didn't,so as the other responder said .The lower numbered pj's had the problem,I quess mine is one.
When my car is idling, the exhaust is bad ***,you walk up too the front and the lifter noise sucks.
Still driving my pj #90

I also have noise, however, it's not lifter noise. I noticed the high level whine after the SuperShaker was introduce. The faster you go the higher the whine gets to a point it hurts the ears after awhile of driving' especially when highway driving.

I have had two PJ and the first one a low number made more noise than the second one. I did talk to the tech line and they said to use 10w40 synthetic oil not 10w30 and they also sent me a new sticker to put on the oil cap. My later number PJ is as quiet as you could ask for.

Exclamation lifter noise

Thanks for the feedback. I to got the same feedback from tech line ,plus decal. That was back when I had under ten thousand miles. Several years ago ,didn't help. I don't know what changes Saleen made to solve the valve train noise issue !! But I wish they would share info.

It came from Saleen and it just goes over your 10w30 and it is 10w40. I don't believe there is any problem with the noise maybe just a little extra clearance in the motor. What number is yours?

I believe the number doesn't represent the order of production for the PJ.
I was told that a Saleen owner had first-choise in choosing a number.

My PJ has number 161 and was produced in September 2006.
I've got 22000 mls on it without lifter noice

My PJ was originaly also a manual.
Because my left leg is partially paralized, and I can't controle the clutch, I had the PJ converted to an automatic by JDM in New Jersey before shipping it to The Netherlands.
The conversion makes it a 1 of 1

Well that answers a lot. I was sure they were all 5 speeds but not 100% know I know. I bet there aren't many PJ in the Netherlands. I do remember hearing or seeing some think on the internet about one going to the Netherlands but I can't remember were. I also remember seeing one that they made a right hand driver.

I had owner number 52 until a young girl talking on the phone decided to turn head on into me and totaled it out. I will have to say the car was made well and saved my son and I, but if you ever see it for sale walk on by because it was creamed.

Cool Lifter noise

Hello from Sweden and PJ #316, ...the only PJ in Sweden !

I wonder if anyone knows what the ideal Motor Oil is for our PJ's, i have a little ticking lifter noise, and wonder if this maybe will disappear by changing the oil !?

All the best from Sweden and a true Saleen and PJ enthusiast

Default lifter noise

I had talked to a Saleen tech and he said they had changed the old recommended 10w30 to 10w40 fully synthetic oil and also sent me a new sticker to go over the old one. I have been using it for 3 years now and I don't hear any ticking at all. I was told that some of the earlier car had more ticking sound than the later car but it was not a problem. Also just because your car has a later number does not mean it wasn't an earlier car. There was no rime or reason how and when they sticker them.

Yes that is acceptable and use 10w40 mobil one fully synthetic oil and it will make less noise and was recommended by Saleen to use. How long have you had your car?

Is 10w40 recommended only for the PJs or should I be using it my stroker supercharged engine as well?

Default the right oil

I believe for a supercharge engine you should run a 5w50 fully synthetic mobil one oil. I had a GT500 and that is what the factory recommended.

For Supercharged cars we recommend Torco 10w30 (5-12psi) and 10w40 for High Compression motors and 12+psi.

Piston slap is no fun.

I think that 5w20 is to thin of oil and that is where your noise is coming from.

For what its worth I have the 302 stroked and supercharged motor in my Hcar. All work was done at the Saleen Troy facility in early 2008. It was originally an H281. I personally picked it up after the modifications in Troy, MI back in the day and was told to only use 10W30 oil as this viscosity was required for oil movement in the engine.
I have never heard any lifter noise. Sometimes the supercharger sounds a little rough on start-up (metal-ly) but after running for a few minutes this goes away. Last year I switched to Amsoil synthetic.

Hopefully anyone that was at the Woodward Dreamcruise this last weekend had a great time! Saw a lot of Saleens at the MOCSEM show last Sunday at Ford PD as well...
