Q: S197 Supercharged Horsepower?
Hey all, new Saleen s281sc owner. I’ve had the car for a couple months, trying to educate myself on what I have. Lots of good information on here, but I’m a little confused. It’s a 2005 , has a stock Saleen pulley, blue injectors, stock air box. I think the pulley is 3.87 but I haven’t measured it with calipers yet. Is there any way to tell what hp I have other than these items. Also with that size pulley ( if that is the size) would it be making 4 or 6 psi boost? Thanks , Dave

In 2005 the s/c model came with a 4.00 pulley and stock injectors. Saleen sold an upgrade kit with the blue injectors, new intake tube and 3.87 pulley and a new computer flash I believe. I think it was in 2006 the upgrade came stock from Saleen on the s/c models. The kit took it from a claimed 435hp to 475hp. I think I remember correctly. Someone will correct me if I don’t.

Hi! There were a few different power kits and tunes back in the 2000s.
The original 2005 S281 Supercharged cars were 400HP, small injectors, stock air box and tube. The 2006 S281 Supercharged cars were 435HP, small injectors, stock air box and tube. The 2007-09 S281 Supercharged were 465HP, larger injectors, Extreme air box lid and tube. From whats been said, the Saleen Speedlab 475HP retrofit kit used the same equipment as the factory applied 2007-09 465HP vehicles. During the 2000s both JDM Engineering and Brenspeed developed their own HP improvement kits for the Saleen Series VI supercharger as well. |

So what’s the extreme air box and tube look like? How can I tell if I have that?

The Saleen Extreme box lid has "SALEEN" where the tube mounts.
The stock tube is rubber and flexible. In 2007 a hard plastic tube was introduced for the 2007 S281 Extreme 550. (seen in the photo) |

Here's some more information on HP with the Extreme as posted by Brenspeed:
Posted by Brenspeed The most popular VSR camshaft for naturally aspirated cars would be the Comp 127300. This cam typically produces a 30 rwhp gain on a mild engine and idle and drives like stock. This is also the cam that was used in some of the Saleen Extreme Mustangs. A comp 127350 has a mild change for supercharged applications but we have found the gains are very similar to the 127300 being used also in supercharged applications. I already had the 127300 VSR cams in my 06 GT when I installed the Saleen S/C with a 3.4 pulley and the Brenspeed Stage 3, 530 hp tune. Runs great and very happy with it.

First off, thanks for all the replies. After reading almost every post in this forum, all the way back to 2005, I’ve come to the conclusion that I have the retro fit 475hp Saleen kit on my car. 3.8 pulley, 39lb injectors, bottom cut out of air box,5 lbs boost on gauge. I live in central Oregon and as far as I know the closest dyno would be in Portland. 150 miles away. Also I don’t know if I want my car tuned at sea level, when I live at 3,000 feet. Im a little nervous about getting a mail order tune when I really don’t know what’s been done to the car. I have had it for a couple months. Bought it from a cheesy dealer that specializes in bad credit. They got it at auction. It’s had a lot of owners, came with no key fob, probably repossessed. Ok, I’m rambling!! I guess my question is... I would like to get it tuned but not sure witch way to go.

Any tags, stickers, or evidence of who did the power retro-fit? |

If you go with a mail order tune JDM engineering and Brenspeed have a lot of experience tuning for the Saleen s/c. I would recommend an air fuel gauge if our do. To make sure all’s good.

It’s # 1289 . Nothing on car, no stickers under the hood.

The car was in the Las Vegas area, and Southern California.

Yes. Looks like you have the upgraded air box.
Looks like you also have the 2006-09 twin gauge pod as well. 2005 SC models had pod gauges modeled after the Ford GT. You do have the original 2005-only solid aluminum shift knob. The Saleen center logo on air bag typically fell off the 2005 and 2006 models. Original S281 floor mats for the 2005 and 2006 models are a lighter grey and do not match the Ford carpets. |
