Default Question: Third brake light replacement? (Hardware & Connectors)

I received my new third brake light today because mine had turned pink. I noticed there is nothing in the tube except the lens, some screws and washers, and a plug. I am pretty car savy, so I assumed I could do this without instructions, being that they did not send me any.

I went to replace it and after installing the lens, I realize the plug they sent with the kit does not fit the plug from the wiring harness. It is much smaller and a completely different peice than what was on the original wiring. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to find out what the deal is with this plug not being correct.

Also, they sent rubber washers. My original lens was held on with screws only, no washers. Do the washers go on the spoiler side of the lens, or do they just go on the screws then insert into the holes?

I had no idea something so simple could become so irritating. Thanks in advance for the help.

I had the same problem on my 06 aswell. The connector ended up being the same as the fuel pump. So wut I did was transfer the plug off of my old brake light ;) works perfect

Yea I hear ya, it just kinda burns me up that you pay for something and it is not correct, and I have to rig it to get it to fit.

My Dad and I had to rewire the original plug onto the new brake light. I can not remember what we did with the washers or if there were any.

I simply broke off the two thin plastic tabs on both sides of the new light harness and it snapped right in..

It was pointed out to them at the parts counter in November
that they are sending the wrong harness. When I brought it
to their attention they promptly sent me a new harness.

So now I have two wrong harnesses. lol

I just took the prongs and plugged them into the female harness sans a harness.
Works for now.

Update and info for future notice:
I called Speedlab and talked to one of the reps. They sent me the correct plug. The smaller plug fits 08+ models and the larger is for 05-07 according to who ever I talked to on the phone.

Did you get a correct part number? They sent me the wrong one twice.

There was no part number on the invoice. It just said "customer received 08+ harness plug, send 05-07 harness plug"

In contacting Saleen they dont know what your talking about and say I have some strange plug.

The big one is what I have on the end of my old "pink" light. It has the white interior locking snap plug.
The smaller black one with the red interior locking snap plug is what they sent me ....twice.

The pins dont even line up should I "shave" the side fins.....so I dont know how he did that. Well like most I just thought I would gremove the pins from the old one and stick the new pins in the there from the new light.

Well my luck ran out and in extracting the pins from the old one I messed up the interior of the plug. The new prongs wont fit in there now.

See the difference?
Please forgive the red paint on the old one...thats where I marked what side the red wire goes on.

The other side:

So.....anyone have their old larger black & white one handy that I could use?

Barricade, I think you just may be talking to the wrong person at Speedlab. I called and they knew exactly what I was talking about before the words even came out of my mouth. The guy I talked to, (Sean maybe) said ok I will send you the correct one right away. I received it in about 5 days. I recommend calling Speedlab again and see if you can talk to someone different. If you are still unsuccessful, I will call them back tomorrow afternoon for you and find out who I spoke with. They have record of it. I will forward you the information.

That is the same number I called.
http://speedlab.saleen.com/store.cfm?store_id=1

Ok man I got you straight. I called them back and got them to look up my order history. Call the Saleen Speedlab at the number above, the part number for the large plug you need is 00-1704-C112840. If you still have issues, ask to talk to Steve. He is the guy I talked to both times and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He said to also have your online order number handy so they can look it up if you ordered it online and not over the phone.

I hope this works.

Hey Daytona,

Do you have the contact info for who you talked to at Saleen? I got a warranty replacement on the third brake light when Jess Albright worked at Saleen to replace the original that had turned pink. Now the replacement only lights on one side and I would like to get another light assembly. I have e-mailed Saleen off the website several times with no response. Help!

Ditto!

While I still don't know if they have the 3rd brake lights in stock at Saleen Automotive in California, he'll try to help you if he can.

Saleen Automotive in Corona, California, is the new company run by Steve Saleen.

Remember that your warranty, if there is one, is with MJ/Revstone in Michigan, and that company is out of business.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give Bill a shout. Warranty is not so much the issue, replacement is - I'll buy the light if I have to, I just want one that works and is not pink!

I'll let you all know.

I got mine last week (I had ordered it last november for $40 before the price change)... and it arrived as the light, with two bare wires, no harness no nothing. I would have just bought the knockoff if I knew I'd be getting no harness... it appears as though they're just selling the knockoffs now. I'm rather ****ed that after waiting months, I have to splice things together all hokey-like now.

And the only reason they're in high demand is the quality of the original sucked. Its BS more than doubling the price.

Guys,

Be appreciative that these are available... they haven't been for a long time.

And I've seen some of the "knockoff" LEDs, and they really aren't that good.

I wasn't able to find the install manual here, or anywhere else online. Maybe they removed it.

Default 3rd Brake Light Installation

Finally got rid of the ugly pink light. Since I couldn't find an installation guide anywhere online, here's what we did. Hopefully it will help someone.

Unscrewed old pink light and cut the wires as close to the old light as possible
New light was $99.99 and came with a couple feet of wire, no plug
Cut off the excess wire, keeping only several inches
Connected new light by splicing the wires, then covered with electrical tape
Shoved the excess wire back in the hole
Screwed in the new light with rubber washers on the outside

We had originally tried putting the washers on the inside, thinking they were supposed to keep the light from rubbing/vibrating against the car. However trying to do this was a PITA! Putting the washers on the outside was so much easier and now I think they must be to protect the plastic light from cracking under the pressure of the tightened screws.

Hope this helps!
