Default Black Chrome Wagon Wheels

I really like black chrome wheels, and I lust after the Darkhorse 7 spokes; so I occasionally do an Ebay search. My latest search netted these black chrome wagon wheels. It seems like you can only get 4 20x9's or 4 20x10's. Curious there is no staggered package. Also, no weights or offsets are mentioned; although it looks like an exchange program. Does anyone know if the new Saleen black chrome rims(351) will fit the 05 to 09 cars; and if Saleen will be offering them for sale? I gotta imagine that they will be big bucks though.

Saw this ad a few weeks ago as well. Curious to see what they would look like on the car.

They will prbably sell them, but they don't have a 10" rear option, at this time.

Could just get a friend to by a set. One person buys the 20x9s and the other the 20x10s and then just swap with each other, viola! A complete set.

There is a problem with the dark chrome....they scratch easier than paint and they (believe it or not) show every spec of dust.

Its basically an acrylic tinted clear coat over the chrome.
So while cool....weigh that into your decision to buy. *

I also saw those about a month the ago. There are the newer thinner 7 spokers on eBay in silver. You can get them then strip & PC but its gonna run you a pretty penny by the time your done.

Maybe if you call the place you can make a deal on a staggered set. I am still going to keep looking for the Darkhorse wheels. Also considering buying a set of the 5 spokes; have them stripped and then black chromed. That would be expensive, as Robert mentioned; but it would be unique. Here's a pic of the Darkhorse wheel:

Its not a new process.
They are PVD...or physical vapor deposition - also known as permachrome. Its a spray on.
The eBay link he posted even explains a little about it.

It does indeed look awesome.

I'm just saying it isn't as durable as PC or real chrome with hexavalent or trivalent.

The more knowledge you have on it the better informed you are which in turn leads to better decisions.

I was at this crossroad in 2011.

It is doable and would indeed look great - and yes it would be in the select few catagory...but the downside is it is like paint in its durability and it would be VERY expensive by the time your done.

Barricade pretty much summed it up and was right the second time.

Correct, PVD is not a chrome plate and it's not a coating over chrome plate. They are not less durable than clearcoated wheels, like silver or a polished aluminum, but because of the reflective properties of PVD, you see every scratch as double in the "mirror."

We've been testing some PVD wheels at work, and they hold up very well.

A good polish is required periodically to clean up the scratches, but generally, treat them like the paint on your body.

Black Diamond Wheel here in So. Cal. and other places can do PVD, and they do a lot of OEM wheels that are an option to chrome plate. They also did the Dark Horse wheels in a custom tint (there are a variety of options on tints, including an ebony black).

http://www.blackdiamondwheel.com

I can say don't use chrome polish on PVD wheels -- trust me. :)

Wao! $1,600 for the chromed ones.
I remember back in the day I paid $900 for my black chromed brand new in boxes.

You're right. It would be way expensive to buy new, then PVD. Now you are in Vossen territory and moving toward multi-piece forged. I just put gloss black wagon wheels on my car. I am gonna keep that look for awhile. I will keep hunting for a used set of Dark Horse; or find a bargain priced set of 5 spokes(yeah right!) and look for a local outfit that does the black chrome PVD. Thanks for your input Robert.

I just watched that vid and it seemed easy enough. I thought the final product turned out too dark...I would have left it after he did the first coat.

Hmmm...I just may try it just for kicks!

Be careful. I don't think this stuff is easily removed like plasti-dip is.

Yeah, I did a google search last night and it doesn't seem like the end result is what every user was expecting. Most cases turned out to be plain black.

I guess I will just let the brake dust accumulate to get the black chrome effect
