Default Seeking info: Sunroof company

The aftermarket sunroof in my car I believe is made by a company called ARC or maybe ARCO, but I'm not sure. Does this name sound familiar to anyone??
Better yet does anybody know if they are still in business?

Maybe, it's ASC... they're a major roof and convertible company.

American Sunroof Company (ASC) was founded by Heinz Prechter.

It eventually became known as American Specialty Car in the 2000s.

American Specialty Car was split into pieces when they went into bankruptcy in the mid-2000s. American Specialty Car still exists and located in Michigan.

I would ask if Automotive Sunroof Company is the remains of the old American Sunroof Company?

It definitely says ARC Inc. on the sticker on the passenger side door jamb.
It also shows a big red dot with lines going thru part of the circle.
I don't know if this is who put the sunroof in for sure but I don't know what else it could be. I'll try get a pic of the sticker to show everyone.

Never heard of ARC? I would have put money on it being an ASC?!

What are your thoughts of buying a donor roof and removing the skin to repair your car?

Or, buy a new larger sunroof and re-cut the roof for the new assembly.

I got another roof with the car. I will use that to reskin the roof eventually, but for now I just want to fix the hole to enjoy driving it.
I have a '68 Mustang that I am doing a ground up restoration on right now and don't want to have both of these cars torn apart at the same time. It will probably be several years until I will get to do the roof job.

I'll have to do that. It is held together from the inside with about twenty steel machine screws going into an aluminum frame and I got all but one screw to come loose to remove the whole assembly. If I can get the last screw out I can take it to a glass shop and have them make a new piece of glass. Even if it is sealed in permanently and doesn't open that would be OK.

I have the Ford factory sunroof, which isn't that great. I have the huge channel or void full of pipe insulation so that it closes tightly with no wind noise. In stock form it was loose and had tons of wind noise. I never open it. Before I sealed it shut it sounded like it would blow off the car at speed! Lol

I also had to clean out the 4 drain tubes and re-attach one! It used to leak like a sieve! (When I washed the car)

I wouldn't think that somewhere in time they were one and the same company.
I thought ASC has been around since the early eighties if not before.

Correct. ASC goes back to the 1960s at least.

Appears that "maybe" another company was trying to make themselves look like ASC. One idea, see where your car was originally sold. Maybe this was a regional company.

Sounds like you have a plan though. By having a new piece of glass cut.

Luckily I have paperwork back to the original owner and I am going to try and contact him to ask him some questions.

Has anyone ever heard of the name Velm for sunroof company? I'm pretty sure that is what brand the sunroof is. If that's the case then I just need to find replacement parts.

Looks like Velm USA was run by Evan Mecham. Evan Mecham was the father of Dennis and Kyle Mecham. Dennis and Kyle created the Macho Trans Am and the Mecham Trans Am. Steve Saleen was a race driver and later manager of Mecham's serialized street car program. Which influence the original Saleen Mustang.

Strange world if the above is true.

If this is the case, I'd leave the sunroof. Its a cool story.

Aftermarket sunroof installs can sometimes suck, but since its from Mechams lineage, its a part of the early Saleen history.

Look up Mecham Firebirds and you'll find some cool Trans-Am images. The 85 style rear spoilers look rather familiar.....

My 85 has an aftermarket roof in it as well, put in 3 months after the car was originally sold from the original dealership. While it wasnt put in by the same company as yours it sounds like the framework is very similar. Mine has a huge crack in the glass and I can't source any parts to fix it, so I think mines going to end up going away (reskinning the roof). I wanted to keep it because it's part of the cars past, but the only way to fix it is to have a new company put one of their roofs in it...which will kill the originality and history anyway. I really wish aftermarket sunroofs weren't so popular in the 80's cause they're a pita to deal with now.

I'm going to find a glass shop to see if they can cut me a piece of glass to fit, or I'm going to cut a piece of lexan myself and seal it in the frame permanently.
