Default How to: Replace PJ license plate light?

Does anyone have a pointer or two as to how to replace the license plate bulb of a PJ? Do I simply pry the lens and bulb housing down? Or something else?

Well...since I have the whole thing here Ill just show you.
See the back of the light housing? See how it has a metal spring clasp on one side?
Thats the side you pry up from.

Now which side is that you ask??? Its the side that has the writing on it.
Not the side with the round seal stamped into the clear plastic.

Its the side on the left here:

Thank you, again! This is great information and will continue to be informative for years to come.

After following the comments (also removing the license plate & frame) I popped the housing and lens free.

My bulb worked its way loose from the tabs. After placing the bulb back into place, it lit.

While viewing the dimness of the bulb, I might look into an LED replacement.

Would these be equivalent LED replacements? What size are they?

Ford P/N: XS4X-13550-AB, what's the size of these bulbs?

I have those on my car-they are much better than stock. The output is white compared to the yellow output of the stock bulbs.

So what is the correct part number from Ford? Do you recommend the LED bulbs instead?

Ford P/N: XS4X-13550-AB

I am going to try a replacement 38mm festoon LED bulb.
http://saleenforums.soec.org/showthread.php?t=6777

User 06281E gave some advise to look for LED assemblies with built in resistors.

The OEM bulb is just a standard Philips C5W 12v 5 w bulb available at most automotive parts stores for approx. $2.00.

Those LED's don't burn to hot and melt the lenses do they?

I went to my local Ford dealer and this part number is not the bulb its the entire lens assembly. Odd thing is the bulb in the lens assembly is not even he same as the one in the Saleens.

In order to make sure these bulbs will fit or work, you must measure your old bulbs.

Color:
Super White

Features:
Built-in Circuit for 12VDC Power Input

Each bulb contains 6pcs 5050 (3 chips) SMD LED

Each bulb contains Heat Sink to prevent Overheat

Built-in IC, No Warning Error

Low Power Consumption

Longer Life Time
This two row bulb is a tight fit when re-installing the light housing. I had to begin the install with a slight angle/tilt for the bulb to clear the hole. After this the lens went straight in.

The bulb is a form of white, I think the blue cast is less noticeable in-person, but it's there. After viewing more LED bulbs, there are many versions of "white."

Thanks to this old thread and your instructions, i was able to install some new LEDs I got for my license plate lights.
But man the first set gave me a hard time, the clip was bent up too far
