Default Side exhaust questions

I am setting up the Saleen S331 side exhaust on my non-Ford truck and am wondering about the connections between the exhaust tips and the exhaust system. From pictures it appears that the exhaust pipes end in a plate that butts up against the back of the tips. Is this plate attached at all to the tips or is it just firmly mounted so it makes contact with the back of the tip. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

There's actually a box there that the plate mounts to. So the plate you have from your exhaust kit makes up the rear of the box and the rectangular tips are mounted to the opposite face (I think). Way more complicated than it needed to be IMO. Makes it a prohibitive PITA to get the tips out for polishing. Frankly, I'd add some decent looking aftermarket tips to the setup instead. The Saleen setup is flawed in that the tips are exposed to the exhaust flow to the point they blacken and corrode QUICKLY.

Thank you. I will probably modify the setup slightly to make removal and cleaning easier. I also plan on grafting in the Saleen side panels where the exhaust exits into the trucks current side panels. I may widen and lengthen them slightly since I have read several posts about the tips melting the paint/panels.

I haven't had a problem with the heat (yet). I went ahead and snapped a pic for you to reference. I may not have described the setup correctly. My mind's eye was definitely fuzzy anyway.

Thanks NoSlo5.0. The picture that I saw on the exhaust kit shows the tailpipe welded to a flat panel. Do you know if Saleen changed this setup to the box setup that you have?

I have a complete replacement cat-back on the shelf in the garage and I think it has the pipes shown in your photo. The first owner of my truck replaced the muffler with a Flowmaster piece and I don't know if anything else was changed at the time. I haven't had any issues with melting skirts either. Someone more familiar with the subtle changes made after the initial release of the truck will have to chime in.
