Default Long tube header HP gains?

I am close to finishing the final mods to my 03 and have decided to install longtube headers to help relieve some back pressure and increase flow. I have hit a plateau with my most recent mods and am convinced this will get things back on track. The headers i will be installing are ceramic coated Macs. Also, emissions testing is not an issue here, so I will be removing the cats and replacing them with a Mac offroad X pipe !

My tuner/buddy recently did this exact install on an N/A and he convinced me to pull the k memeber and come in from the bottom. The down side is that removing the front end will require and alignment when we are done. The good news is he will be helping for free, as he owes me several favors... I will post some pictures through out the process.

I am anticipating seeing a decrease on the boost gauge and a nice gain at the wheels. I realize that most of us don't dyno between every mod, so I'd be surprised if anyone has done a before and after...just the same i'd love to hear your results or your best guess for your set up.

My mods are in my signature and my most recent dyno puts me at 365/377. I know that might seem low to a few, so before we get into that same old arguement keep in mind that is SAE corrected and there is no such thing as a good air day @ 4000'. Even w/ a 2.80" upper pulley i am only making 10psi due to the air density (or lack of it!!).

I'd be disapointed if i don't see 380/400 with the headers...thoughts??

Sounds awesome man. I have bassani mid-lengths just sitting in my garage (for a year now). They were on my 02 N/A GT. I picked up 14rwhp on my N/A with no cats. I believe you should pick up 20+ with the S/C.

As soon as I stop being lazy and put these on my saleen, I will let you all know what my gains from the headers were.

20+ would be sweet! What made you decide to go w/ the mid lengths vs long tubes...the install?
Thanks,
Scott

I need an additional O2 sensor for my wideband to monitor air fuel ratios. I added this bung to replace the current one i have.

There are four factory O2s. Two before and two after the cats. Even though the post cat O2s will be eliminated from the tune, i will replace them in the new x-pipe. This will require extensions on the wires. All this hassel is in case i go back to stock some day.

Ok...finally got around to working on the header swap. I did a before video of the exhaust that i will post that after the project is complete. Here are the pictures of todays work. The enitre process of removing the old exhaust and the K-member took less then 4 hours. Not bad at all!

Not to mention, it looks like the garage door is preventing any movement backward.

LOL, I do the same when I do all my work to. Can't wait to get a MaxJax car lift. In the mean time I will just use the stands.

When you took the k-member out what did you use to support the engine? Just that single bottle jack?

nice work!! that k member looks HUGE... nice job on the removal. I would love to do the same but replace the k member with a maximum motorsports kit, or one like it to shave off some weight, and possibly go turbo! looking forward to the videos.

The bottle jack is on the crank pulley and there is a jackstand on the front of the trans. The picture was right after we slid it out..

Thanks. Yeah its a pig! I'd guess an easy 200lbs and it would be a great place to shave some weight.

While i was waiting on the gaskets i installed a 2 step launch control. I went w/ the N2MB.

Tonight i installed the the headers. It seems it would be impossible to install longtubes w/o removing the k member...should have time to finish putting it back together Saturday i hope. Here are some pics of the headers installed.

Finished putting the car back together and loaded the new tune today. I won't be driving it until the roads dry up, but here is a quick video of the car after the longtubes and off road x-pipe were installed. The video is hard to see because its dark and you can tell its windy, but the sound is good enough to get the general idea. Note the 2 step at the end of the video. It's set @ 3900 rpm....enjoy!!

I haven't had a chance to drive it yet, but i will be sure to give you some feed back. I think a resonable expectation for gains would be +20rwhp.

Here are both videos.

you are prob correct wireman a few years back i tuned a car with a s4 blower on it with a stock pulley and fuel upgrades and kooks long tubes it was around 375hp 390 torque on a easy tune. your easy going to pick up 20hp, dont forget alot of times you have less heat too around the valves with long tubes and you can run a little more timing as well.

Thumbs up

Drove the car tonight and here's what i noticed. The car comes on and feels stronger from mid to high rpm, with what seems like a decent gain on the big end (5000 rpm and up). Whats cool is that the boost comes in 1lb or so higher and peaks at 1.5 lbs less, so it is definately flowing better. I would typically see 10.5 lbs max and tonight i saw 9. Thats w/ a 2.80 upper.

Oh yeah...it's loud!

The car doesn't feel lazy in fact it picked up a bit on the bottom. What I'm saying is the majority of the hp gains we see from headers is at higher rpms and that is exactly what it felt like.

Any idea on your gains?
Sorry, I don't have a before and after sound clip, but this should give you a perfect idea of how the car will sound after the swap.

Before (Stock exhaust).
(Start up/ idle) Bummmurrrrr....
(short revs) Vummmmurrrrrrmmmm.... vummmurrrmmmm....
(Going down the road) Muuuurrrrrrrrrrrrr.... (shifting) Murrrrrrrrrrrrrr... (second gear) Murrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

After (Saleen Magnaflow catback, Kooks long tube headers, off road X-pipe)
(Start up/ idle) BAROOOMM... wabba, wabba, wabba, wabba, wabba...
(short revs) Booooroooomm... Waahhh WAAhhhh WAAAHHHHHHHMMM!!!...)
(Going down the road) MURAAAAAAHHHH.... (shifting into second and hammering it) chirp, BUUUUWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! (going into third) chirp, BUUUUUAAAHHHWAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope that helped. You're welcome!
