Default Q: Fix for exhaust drone?

anyone found a cure yet for that annoying exhaust drone in the S331?
I think it is coming from the collectors at the side exit, but I am also thinking about changing the mufflers for some others.

Hennie,

Not sure what you mean by the collectors at the sides. The drone is from the crossflow magnaflow muffler that is directly under the cab of the truck. A GENIUS idea from someone at saleen.

You could have all of your interior ripped out and have dynamat put down to help block some of the drone.

You could change your rear gears so when you are driving, you are not int he RPM range that causes the drone.

You could change to the non side exit exhaust from the 08 models (or any 04-09 f150 dual exhaust setup) and make your side exit nonfunctional.

You could try some headers and different cats and a 2.5 I/O muffler in the same place where the stock muffler is now. I dont know if this will solce the problem though.

Good luck.

I remember the C6 corvette had a similiar problem. Alot of guys put a Corsa exhaust on because it was well insulated. I wonder if there is an insulated exhaust that would fit on the saleen? I wonder if a fiberglass exhaust wrap might help. I still think the collectors on the side exit have alot to do with it resonating in the cab, but how would a person fix that. Dynamating the entire cab would work if you have the time or the money.

I dont understand what you mean by the collectors on the sides. Those "tips" arent even tips at all. They are just metal frames. There is nothing but an exhaust pipe that is angled out behind them.

I just spoke with Mike at Troyer Performance. He sells headers and a different intermediate pipe. He said there is a way to route the exhaust so the muffler would move from the stock location. This should relieve the drone. The headers and intermediate pipe are a little pricey. he doesnt have the rest of the kit developed, but I am sure he could walk someone through it. Just give him a call or email sales@troyerperformance.com.

He also said that he would consider doing an entire custom exhaust setup on an S331 at cost, as long as you could leave the truck with him for a little bit. he is in VA.

That metal frame is what I am calling the "collector" it should of been connected to the exhaust. The metal frame resonates the exhaust note. I noticed last night that the metal frame is also starting to rattle loose.

Rattlings loose doesnt surprise me. However, The drone you hear is coming from the muffler, not the tips on the side. Some of these trucks came with a borla muffler, some came with a magnaflow. The Borla tends to resonate more than the magnaflow. If the muffer was moved to the position as it was on the lightnings and 05+ F150s, you would have no resonation, regardless of the tips. An easy test is to unbolt the tips and remove them. Drive around a bit, you will still get the same resonation.

I just went and crawled under mine. I have the Magnaflow. I Guess I didnt realize how far forward the exhaust pipe was. I think I am going to try and wrap the exhaust and see if that works.

What will you be swapping the exhaust to? A regular F150 setup? You will lose your side exit exhaust. More than likely, you will have to go to a custom exhaust shop. With headers, new cats, new muff, and new pipes, you are looking at clost to $2000 with labor included. I am not sure what Troyer charges for headers, the cats, and muff.

I was talking about wraping the muffler with exhaust wrap like I have done on my race car and my bike. It cheap compared to the alternative. If it dont work oh well Im only out a couple hundred bucks and a few hours.

Lemme know how the wrap works.

According to my records, there were much less than 600 S331s made in 07. More like 350 +/-

I had more numbers that broke it down by color and SC option from Saleen, but I will be ****ed if I cant find the email. I know mine was one of 20 that was red with the options that I have. Just email saleen customer service through their site and someone will get back to you. Thats what I did.

I posted up on the cervinis forum and gave them a call regarding their side exit exhaust system that they utilize on their trucks. I couldnt get anyone on the phone, but I am awaiting a response. Their description says that they use magnaflow mufflerS...read, more than one. Maybe they have a kit already out. There cannot be too many different ways to run this exhaust.

My dealer told me 406 were produced, and out of that the last 6 were full 4 door models. Mine is #402. Thanks for all the JDM/Troyer info. Santa will be stopping in my garage this year!!

It looks like the cervinis exhaust kit will bolt right up to our trucks with minor modifications. They have moved to a cylindrical muffler in the ground effects. I have no idea how this sounds though...or a price....

After further investigation, this kit will need some modification. Mainly, the pipes along the sides will have to be extended. This kit was designed for the regular cab F150. I am still going to stand by the custom magnaflow kit.

Did you have a drone before the 22" replacement? I think the stocker is 18". Did you do 2.5" I/O or stick with the 2.5" in and 2.25" out?

Due to what was available @ the time I got the 3" in and out. Ran the 2.5 to the DIDO and did the same transition to the factory tailpipes. Used the DIDO FOR THE X-PIPE.
ps
Drone started after install.

Default Drone

Found this on another forum:

Re: Exhaust drone...resonator help

Another way to fix the noise would be to change the point of resonance . You can do this by adding weight to the exhaust. Everything has a point of resonance, this is probably the easiest way to change it and increase it to the point to where you wont hear it. Adding resonators would help also, but this is why on some of the late model vehicles, they have weights clamped to the exhaust pipe.

I understand what you mean now about the xpipe. I figured thats what you were referring to, but had to be sure.

The weight idea is a good one. However, where to clamp the extra weight would be the question. Is there something on the market, specifically to clamp to exhaust to add weight?

Funny you ask. I have continued the drone search and there was an article that refered back to a Ford TBS on exhaust drone on and older model car. The thing bolted to the exhaust by a u bolt clamp and had a round dampening device on it. I remember seeing those things and remember some mufflers had metal straps welded on them on the end and sometimes on the shell. May have to give this a try. Read another one where the guy had a bad seal when installing his exhaust and had to add another or 2nd clamp to stop the leak and lost the drone as well. Not sure about that story, the leak could have been the factor.

Forget the add the clamp and weight ideal. Magnaflow said incert a pipe 3" in the oulet side of the muffler and tack weld. This will make the exhaust stay in the muffler longer. Mine being a 3" dido may have caused the problem. My have shot myself in the foot on my install. This will cause a bit of a restriction and increase the low end torque. I did this and it took some of the drone out but not allof it. All performace muffs will have some drone. Looks like back to the drawing board.

tack weld a 3"ID pipe or 3" of pipe?

This year, I hope to go to a true dual setup with two mufflers. Less exhaust gases staying in a bigger muffler x 2. oh, and some headers too :)

Default Exhaust

In my case I had to make a reducer from 3"od to a 2 1/4"id. Then make it long enough to prodrude 3" past the outer wall (back) of the muffler prodruding in the inside.

The Production exhausts on these trucks were Magnaflow for the first half of the 07 model year, and Edelbrock for the second half of 07 and all of 08. The mufflers are different and the exhaust ends are different (edelbrock doesnt require the shrouds), dont want to call them "tips" because they are stictly cosmetic and don't attach to the exhaust itself due to the tight clearances between it and the rocker panel. The exhaust can move a little, and the tip would rub the panels if they were actually attached, so instead they are suspended from the bottom of the truck.

The Edelbrock doesn't drone nearly as badly, and is much more tolerable. I have a few of both the side and rear exhausts available. I also have the rocker panels and bed panels, as well as rear fascias. If you are interested in replacing your exhaust with the newer version, changing to the rear exit, or just want some spare parts "just in case", contact me and I'll make sure you get the best possible deal.

Default Hooker

Well the fix that I posted did help but I am still not satisfied. I looked @ the Edelbrock mufflers but bought the Hooker aerochambers to try. Doing away with the DIDO and going with 2 SISO. Maybe the H or the X pipe. Not sure which one, but will be installing them today. These things look good. Hooker and other reviews claim they are known for no drone or at least little or no drone. I have seen the the ehaust that goes out the rocker and they do look very good. Out the back pipes don't seem to drone the cab as bad, well the best I remember but when younger the drone didn't bother me either. Thanks for the offer and may get back with you. I'll let the forum know the results of this change. I have to find a reasonable fix for this issue. Hate to throw $$$ out the window but this isn't the first time and won't be the last. My veh. is my hobby these days.

I have to say that the different shifting pattern it has now, due to the JDM tune, also helps, the car doesn't shift to early but keeps a little RPM's and this has little to no drone except when it goes in OD at lower speeds.
So now I am installing my 2 LPG tanks (total165 liter) to have the car run on LPG(Propane mix) and after that is done I will see how it sounds.
I love the idea of running on LPG for only $ 2,60 a gallon instead of almost $ 7.50 for a gallon gas
If it still has the drone, i will start with inserting and tack welding these pcs of pipe in the muffler.

BTW would it be possible to just swap out the magnaflow for edelbrock mufflers without changing the pipes?

Default Drone

I am sure in my case there is some modifications to be made due to the distance of the center to center spacing of the DIDO PIPES. Nothing a plasma and welder can't fix. My only concern is the more you wack and weld on the system the uglier the system gets and the pocket book gets smaller too. One thing for sure the Hooker mufflers weight is extremely much more due to the inside design. Off I go now to spend $$$ on trail and error.

Backin....

some pics would be great too. I am not sure how you are going to run an X/Hpipe though. I am assuming you have the side exit exhaust system?

Are you going to run the system like the MS paint drawing that I posted?

Hooker aerochambers are a NICE muffler. While they are not polished stainless steel like maggies, I believe they outflow the maggies. They sounds great too. I had some on my 66 mustang several years ago. Very mellow until you really got on it.

Thanks for being brave enough and having pockets deep enough to investigate this exhaust issue. Is there anyway you can get a before and after sound vid?

Wink at last Little or no drone at all

I have made my return to the on the face. Just got back from the install and a 30 mile trip, in town and freeway. I believe that HOOKER has done me right!!!!! The drone that I had gone. No kicking the over/d button. All I hear now is the sound of a performance muffler. Supercharger whine much louder than the exhast. Might be too quite for some of you but the exhaust will talk when asked without the drone. Did not put the x/y pipe on at this time. I've got it figured out how to do it. Due to the center to center spacing of the DIDO, I turned the mufflers vertical and welded together on both ends and made my existing set up work. I do still have the factory side by side out the pass./ side. Not sure how it sounds from the curb but sound great in the trk. The sound I have now on the inside is GREAT at cruisin speed and freeway speed. NO DRONE. Can't say this fix is for everone and can't say it will work for you, but I am tickled.
Well I will get some pics later and might even try the old x/y pipe but for now it is mix a drink, turn the tv to the speed channel for NASCAR and fire the grill up. LET THE PARTY BEGIN FOR 2009! This mod was well worth the $$$$. Guess I could make a lamp out of the magnaflow, very exp. lamp.

GOOD LUCK

Thumbs up factory tail pipes ot the right side

I went ahead and left the factory TAILPIPES out the passenger side to keep the looks as if I WAS A SLEEPER, no body knows I have the Supercharger. Mods for the superchager will come later. Got to fix what I have messed up first. The true dual comes out as if factory. Due to the mufflers being black you can not ever see them. They blend in with the underbody. Who cares if they are not polished, they are going to get road film on them and if shiny I would have to clean them. The factory was a SIDO. I HAVE TRUE DUELS from front to back. 2 mufflers and 2 tail pipes coming out 1 side as factory. Pic's will come in the morning. Got chicken wings on the side with shimp, chicken and sausage slow simmered with Newmans SOCKAROONI sauce over pasta with my own spices waiting on me. Not only does the trk. sound good, this meal is great. Can't beat Newman's sauce as starter for a easy fix meal with your own spices. SEE YOU TOMORROW !!!! I am 1 happy camper tonite!!~!!

BOOOOOO!!!!

You thought YOU had drone....come drive an S331 and see what drone REALLY is. Thanks for your input on exhaust, but our system is run completely different than yours.

I dont know if you had mentioned it before, but if you had said you had drone on a harley, that is an EASY fix with off-the-shelf parts.

I didn't know we had different exhaust. Am I not welcome on this site now due to a Harley? Sorry to mislead anyone.

NO one said you are not welcome! Of course you are welcome here!

The exhaust on an S331 exits out both the passenger and drivers side. We have a small magnaflow muffler that sits side ways right under our cab. It is a DIDO muffler with one inlet and outlet on either side....rather than two inlets on one side and two outlets on the other. Then we have pipes that go OVER our frame and run down the length of our rocker panel molding...and it exits in front of the rear tires.

For a Harley Truck, I like a magnaflow catted y-pipe into a DIDO SPINTECH or Magnaflow muffler, and two pipes out in front of the passenger wheel. The spintech is LOUD LOUD, but no drone. A long enough magnaflow will eliminate a lot of drone also :)

Default easy fix

Guys the drone is an easy and cheap fix.
I took the car to Norway now and as soon as I was in Germany and took it 110-120+MPH, the car is as quiet as stock truck!!
On my way back i will see what the real top speed is, I guess around 150MPh should be possible

HAHAHA......Easy and cheap huh?? If this is your way of fixing it I just have 2 comments.....not too many places around my neck of the woods (or our country for that matter!!!) that you can drive over 90mph safely, and second..."cheap" would be in the eye of the speeding ticket holder. LOL

I know what you mean though, when we drove around Talladega I noticed a difference as well. be careful over there, its the other people you have to watch out for most of the time.
