Default Pics: 06-0159 S281 Extreme - Lizstick with flames

When your lucky enough to get to build masterpieces - one (1) rare breed they say doesn’t exist shows its true color…meet S281-E 06-0159

Many of asked me why I haven’t been on the forums much this last week – well ask yourself what you’ve done in the last five days and ill share with you what mine has included!
I met Sam N. owner of said 06-0159 two years, 11 months ago, only a few months after we first opened our doors in April 2008. Sam came in with a cool car with a cool paint job and being around Mustangs for so many years I dismissed its exclusivity. Life would have it that we would not see this car again for three years until it was time,… time to get vicious.

Sam came in again about three months ago and the car surfaced, but I didn’t exactly remember it. Fortunately we see lots of Mustangs come through the shop so it can be daunting to remember every one, but this car was special. Matt, our lead technician came out front only to have a déjà vu and recalled the many memories of his days at Saleen building specialty one-off cars and especially this one. Matt proudly explained to me that as rare as Extremes are, this car was even rarer because it was painted “Lizstick” Red, and a Saleen factory installed glass roof, but the Ghost Flame paint scheme was FACTORY PAINTED at Saleen headquarters in Irvine and to this day is the ONLY car “flamed” by Saleen…EVER! Talk about “RARE”! Obviously with my love of the Saleen brand I was memorized and had only hoped Sam would let us get acquainted and spend some quality time with his awesome ride! So we consulted with him, painted a canvas of what would love to do and awaited the day to come when we’d get a chance to show our talents on this already built masterpiece.

A couple of months had passed and knee’s deep in projects, the “Vicious Red” Saleen slipped our minds – just like any shop many customers come in but not every customer pulls the trigger – so we chalked it up to Sam not being ready. Well that all changed two weeks ago when Sam showed up at the shop with a slightly vicious smile on his face and an said “I’m ready!” Much like our original estimate 3 years ago, this plan included reworking of an already beautiful car that most of us would give a limb to have. But even though Sam’s car is #0159, it really is #0001 of 1 if you really think about it.

Ordering parts, inspecting parts, building “one-off” parts and installation / modification had a time expiration of only 5 days to complete! As I type we are finishing the last few hours of reassembly and in only a few hours she will be put on display at the annual SMS Supercar show highlighting Steve Saleen’s greatest builds over the last near three decades, then off to Saleen Fest to wrap up one full weekend up of drooling Saleen Mustang lovers.
This car like all of our builds had to have Sam’s flair and our originality in every project we take on. With Sam giving the reins and the keys to his car (something I guess he’s never handed anyone else since the car is EXACTLY the way it was when it left Saleen back in ’06) over to us intrusting us to give our usual “white glove” service that would grace his ride and that’s exactly what we’ll give him.

Sam opted to hide all of his wiring (engine harness), relocate his PCM / Fuse box (a 281 exclusive trademark), add a full array of steel braided hoses, custom black AN fittings, AFCO Dual Pass / Dual Fan Heat Exchanger (with steel braided lines and AN fittings closing the loop on the cooling system), a Custom “one-off” Supercharger tank – overflow tank and brake cover with a surface finish even he won’t tell us about. We installed a set of “Saleen Black” valve covers that dead on matches the Saleen Supercharger, a painted “MATT B.lack” engine block treatment with a Flat silver pulley finish, and a host of other details that will make you discover another trick we did every time you check out his ride. We pride ourselves is modifying even the slightest details that others overlook, giving us a unique “how did they do that” response. Did I mention we took his Saleen stock vehicle and did all this in a week?? Don’t ask, we won’t do this again, but we really wanted to debut it at this weekend’s Saleen festivities.

Please enjoy some of these pictures we’ve processed. We’ll keep you updated as after this weekend is over, the car comes back for phase 2 which we won’t tell you at this point to keep the suspense. But I can tell you that phase 1 was only a starting rally point!

Looks good Jason! Good job on the wire tuck guys, from what I've heard its a lot of tedious work to do. Gives me some inspiration/motivation for my project car!

That looks nice; did you add polished ceramic coated headers as well?

I like the wire tuck, sweet. Jason, have you (or would you) consider making a engine wire harness extension kit? I don't want to relocate the PCM, just re-route the harness under the reservoir to the PCM instead of the way it is now going over the valve cover. The newly painted valve covers I got from 281 are really nice but I can hardly see them with the shampoo bottle, wire and hoses in the way. Or would you consider making a wire spec and hardware parts list that I could buy from your vendor and solder the necessary length. I'll gladly pay for your time to make up the spec sheet. Thanks, John.

We are working on a "kit", but that's down the road a bit. Bring the car by so you can see ours in person. We have this one done and another in progress.

I love the intercooler overflow tank location. Not sure what TB he is using but I've paint matched mine to the body of my car.

Shops like that are rare. Its really admirable that you guys put so much appreciation in everything you do over there. This post reminded me of the alarm I got installed a few weeks ago. I usually do all my own work but had this local audio shop install an alarm for me. Long story short I caught them doing burnouts in my car and found scratches on the fender and grease all over the interior.

Those are not decals, that is etched into the metal.

When there is a kit available I will purchase it. I have been doing design options on different wiring wraps and some changes in routing. They were good enough for this summer, but I am still unhappy. I would like to make this a winter project if a kit was available.

Smile Thumbs up 281 Motorsports

Congratulations and well done on your build Matt and Jason. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Your creativity is refreshing. I also want to thank you both for taking care of my car and preparing the car for my road trip this summer. Storing my car in Los Angeles, flying into town, picking up the car at your shop, and leaving the same day (after a great dinner) on the start of a 1 month 5,415 mile road trip and having the car perform flawlessly is awesome. We had track days, cruises, shows (came in second in a judged event) and some very spirited driving during the trip and the car performed perfectly. I highly reccomend 281 Motorsports to anyone needing help with mods or otherwise. Jason and Matt will go the extra mile to make sure you get a quality job for a fair price.
Thanks Again
Aloha

Hey Mark,

I misread your post. Yes those are decals on the coil packs. Let me inquire about the cost of those.
