Default Plasti Dipped 20" Saleen wheels (photos)

Thought I would give Plasti Dip a try on my 20" Saleens. Let me know what you think. I think they turned out pretty good for $20 bucks at Home Depot and a couple hours of work.It was fairly easy to do and didn't take too long. Changes up the look a lot. My red decals come in next week and I'm adding the Saleen door decals and the rear bumper inserts in red as well.

Thanks for the compliments guys. They were all chrome prior to painting. I just cleaned them off real well and sprayed a pretty heavy 1st coat. Then did a total of 3 coats with 20 minute breaks in between coats.

I looked on the Plasti Dip website and didn't see a gloss black but I imagine that you could maybe apply a clear coat over it. So far the rims have been done since Saturday and I haven't had any chips or issues with it. Still looks the same as it did when it was first done. Kind of early to tell how well it will hold up after time but I am pretty impressed with the look and texture of it.

curious, you didnt sand the original Chrome rims to allow the paint to stick did you

if not whats the procedure and can it be reversed back to original

It is completely reversible. I did no sanding at all. All I did was jack up the car and removed 2 wheels at a time. Cleaned them off really well with soap/water and some detailing spray. Let them dry completely and taped off the tires. Simply sprayed a heavy first coat and let dry for 30 minutes and then did 2-3 more lighter coats waiting the same amount of time in between coats. If you want to remove it then you can just peel it off like a rubber sheet. I was reading online where someone had it on their DD for like a year and it was holding up really well.

that sounds cool, ill look into it some more

it gives your car a kind of stealth look

the mat look also gels with the other mats on the car like the trim , mirrors , grills and shaker etc...

looks good

Man, I wanted to hate it. I did. But it really looks great! Shine those tires up and redo the pic, it will look a thousand times better. That is the one bad thing about black wheels, they make the tires look gray or brownish. Great work!

one other thing after looking at your photos

what about red Saleen tyre valve caps that will highlight with the red on the S281 side badge and the red on the side of the shaker ?

its the little things that make a difference

just another idea to toy with

I'll take a look at that option after all my red decals get here this week and installed. Don't want to over do the red. Unfortunately the door decals that say Saleen weren't available in red so I got a gloss black set of those to go behind the red chevrons. I have a vision I'm going for but not sure how it will actually look

Looks like you would have the same look as mine when done, i also added the red decals, and black door lettering. I will send you some pictures when i can.
The red pin strip on the wheels does look good ad would finish a subtle look, put mine on last November and still looks great.

It wasn't my intention to copy your look. I didnt know that you had the black door lettering. I hope you don't mind. Great color combo

I'm glad this worked out! I think i am also going to do this.. You guys can search plasti dip on youtube and there are videos showing the removal process and it just peels off like a vinyl sticker. Also if you get a rock chip touch up is even easier than the initial application with the spray. I might have to do this next weekend.. How many cans did you go through 06S/C? Also did the dip hold up in the lug area when you tightened them down?

I used about 4 cans and even bought and extra 1 for back up. The lug nuts were the only issue that I ran into since the socket used is a tight fit in the holes and when you are tightening it down it had a tendency to catch the Plasi Dip. I would suggest leaving the center caps out so that you can touch it up if it happens. Just be careful with tightening the lugs and as posted earlier, touch ups are very easy to do with minimal overspray. Post pics if you do it. I think it looks awesome

I figured that would be the case with the lugs, I am going to turn the thin wall socket on my lathe and bring down the OD as much as i can and see if that helps. Thanks for the info and i will definitely post up pics if it comes out as good as yours did!

Looks good man! I was going for a similar look as well with the black and red. I was gonna do matte black windshield banner, matte black GT3 flag on the sides, matte black custom center exhaust, matte black RTRs, and with red Stoptechs all around and front/rear diffusers.

Great job... looks great! Wonder how the coating holds up to water and cleaning? I would try it on my chromes aftermarkets but now my wheels are useless after I installed my stoptechs. Running on two different pairs of shoes till i order my forgestars.

I'm going to go back and spray the inside of the rim next week end. This first time was a trial run. Tonight I'm tinting the tail lights on my buddy's '04 Saleen.

Thank you Barricade. I love making my Saleen truly mine. And the door letters are there, just in black so you don't notice it until you get up on her. I was told they weren't made in red.

You can order them in black. Give 281 Motorsports a call and they can get you set up with what you need.

Thanks everyone for all of the compliments. Special thanks to Jason for following up on the decals and making sure they were received. Went above and beyond

Thanks Brandon!

Quick Story,......I heard a funny comment today from a customer were doing a magazine tech article on today. He said his friends didnt bring their Mustangs by because they all thought we specialized in Saleens only. I said, "I guess I never thought about it that way," I just knew we loved Mustangs in general. But come to think of it, we do and we're dayum proud of it! The Saleen owners are the best car people hands down! He could have said that merely because our parking lot is filled with them everyday, but who's counting anyways...lol.

Hey Jason,
Do you have the pictures you took when my car was parked next to the black Saleen and the '06 Extreme from Hawaii? I'd love to see them if you do, I don't have any good pictures of my car! Probably because it's always so filthy..

Saw a car at Cars & Coffee this past Saturday that had this done.
There was discoloration in it and it looked horrible.

I couldnt find the owner of the car to ask but Im guessing the heat maybe?
Or prolonged exposure to sunlight? Or do you think they guy just didnt do it right?

Ive asked this before and was told just peel and redo when it starts to look bad but
any ideas on how long it lasts?? Was that normal?

Sweet! The forgestars are one of the sickest wheels(black) I have seen yet on mustangs. Congratulations on your purchase and cant wait to see your pics. What offsets did you end up ordering?
